Experienced campaigner Tim Seaton came close to capturing The Earl of Dartmouth Trophy over Woodsome Hall's golf course yesterday after steady rounds of 73 and 75 in difficult conditions. One of the oldest competitors in the field, at 52 years of age, he produced solid golf to finish as runner-up to Bradford's Sam Jewell at the Fenay Bridge course.

In gusty conditions Seaton (pictured above on the right with Woodsome Hall Captain Geoff Headey) posted just one solitary birdie as he made mostly pars in his eight over par total of 148 just two strokes behind the winner who is the son of Derby County Football Club manager Paul. He secured second place, despite a triple bogey six on the par three third hole during his second round, mainly because he covered his back nine holes during the afternoon in an impressive one under par 34.

On a day when scoring was made extremely difficult by a combination of very strong winds, firm greens and tricky pin positions Seaton, playing in only the third grouping out, used all his experience to combat the wind and posted a total that for a long period looked like it would not be beaten.

Seaton, a former England Boys International, is relatively new to the local circuit after joining Huddersfield Golf Club as their General Manager just over a month ago from Headingley. He is a former Cambridgeshire County Champion, has represented his county over 250 times and is a winner of several notable championships including The Gog Magog Trophy, a competition played annually at the golf club where he is also a member and victor of their club championship on nine occasions. He has also recently won the Cambridgeshire Wheel Salver, a matchplay event that he captured in 2006 beating Jon Osler in the final.

Doncaster born Seaton, also a trained accountant, trailed by two strokes at the halfway stage from Howley Hall's Luke Maguire as did home club member Graham Cox. However, when Maguire 'no returned' during his afternoon round and Cox failed to produce the magic of his morning effort it left Seaton as the regions highest placed finisher.

Seaton's display will have given Fixby Scratch Team Captain, David Jagger, something to consider regarding selection for team matches after his performance left fellow club members Richard Broadley, Brad Tupman, Fraser Scholefield and Dan Stocchero trailing in his wake. Although it is still expected that Broadley, Richard Oddy, Charles Webb and Neil Williams, who withdrew from the Woodsome event at short notice, will line up for the club at Dewsbury in The HHDUGC Scratch Team Championship on Sunday.

Woodsome Hall member, defending champion and also the winner in 2006, Chris Dyson, was unable to pull off what would have been a dramatic hattrick of wins as he recorded scores of 85 and 75 for a total of 160 to finish down the field. Richard Holt, also a member at Woodsome and playing with Seaton scored rounds of 75 and 77 to finish on 152 and grab fifth place.

The difficulty in the scoring was proved when CSS for both rounds increased from the usual 69 to 72 and were deemed to be 'reduction only' rounds. More scores and information can be found in our Yorkshire Order of Merit section.
