Woodsome Hall's Chris Dyson is the sole representative from the local region who has qualified for the matchplay stages of the Yorkshire Amateur Championship at Alwoodley Golf Club.

However, the plus-one handicapper who recently set the course record at his home course (see report), only just made the knockout stages as he finished in the 32nd and final qualifying position out of the 165 starters. Today Dyson (pictured above) added a round of 80 to his opening 73 for a 153 total and will now face the leading qualifier and host club member Will Shucksmith in the elimination stages.

Alvin Trophy winner Shucksmith lead the strokeplay rounds by a single stroke from Wheatley's Aaron Hodkin after carding a 69 on the opening day then adding a 76 on the much tougher second day to keep hold of his overnight lead. On a day when the scoring soared due to a stiff breeze and occasional showers there was a trio of golfers on 147 which included Hodkin's fellow club mate Steve Brennan, Mike Henson from Bedale and Headingley's L Cooper.

Dyson will tee off at 8.30am tomorrow morning and if successful will then face the victor of the match between Greg Hyde (Grange Park) and Moortown's Nigel Sweet. You can check out our news blog to follow Dyson's progress.

As for our other local golfers it was a day to forget for young Dan Overend. After lying in a tie for third place overnight the Hanging Heaton member dramatically collapsed to a nightmare score of 90 in his second round and finished well down the field. Bradley Hall's Andy Shaw, who was also in the top 32 overnight, also fell away badly with an 84 for a 157 total.

It was a close call for Dewsbury's Edward Battye, a qualifier last year, who produced a creditable 75 on the second day but missed out on making the grade by a single stroke. It was also a case of nearly but not quite for Fixby man Dan Stocchero who after a 74 yesterday was looking in good shape but an 81 today ended his hopes as he missed out by two shots.

Recently crowned West End Trophy champion, Sam Bridges, recorded a pair of 78's to finish on the same mark as Huddersfield Golf Club General Manager Tim Seaton with another Fixby member Richard Oddy a couple of shots further back on 159.
