Richard Broadley successfully defended his Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union of Golf Clubs Individual Matchplay title when he beat Andrew Whitworth in the 36 hole final at Halifax Golf Club.

Delayed by an hour due to mist over the Ogden course Broadley, from Huddersfield Golf Club, raced to a five-up lead at lunch and then extended his advantage to seven after just 21 holes. However the Bradley Hall man, a ten-time winner of this event and last years beaten finalist, fought back to be only two down at one stage. But in the end Broadley (pictured above on the left with Whitworth) eventually ran out the winner by a 4 & 3 margin.

It is the third time that the plus-one Fixby player has now won the title as he also captured the crown in 2004 when beating West End's Steve Martin at Meltham. He was also victorious in the Junior event in 2005 following a close game against James Thompson of Meltham.

The Individual Junior Matchplay final also took place with Nicholas Marsh from Elland Golf Club playing Willow Valley's Lewis Howell. Marsh was three-up after 18 holes and in the afternoon went on to win 7 & 6.

13-year-old Marsh, who lives for eight months of the year in Mauritius with his parents, has a handicap of five and is one of the youngest ever winners of the title. His father David, a PGA member, is the General Manager at Le Touessrok Golf Course. Marsh is pictured below on the left with his opponent before their tussle yesterday.
