Chris Hanson from Crosland Heath Golf Club came first in the Charity Pro-Am at Halifax Golf Club on Tuesday. He carded a 74 (+4) in the event designed to help raise money for the NSPCC.
He recovered from a poor start in treacherous conditions to clinch victory by a single stroke from Woodsome Hall's David Astin.

Whitworth Returns as Bradley Hall Seek Defence
Tomorrow sees one of the Halifax, Huddersfield Union's premier events with the Scratch Team Championship held at Dewsbury District Golf Club and defending champions Halifax Bradley Hall are boosted by the return of plus one handicapper Andrew Whitworth.
Whitworth is a multi-champion of the Union and has countless golfing achievements under his belt so his inclusion makes the Holywell Green club the side everyone has to beat. Although they enjoyed a runway 13 stroke victory at Willow Valley last season and have the strongest team on paper with Andrew Shaw (+1), Jim Fairhurst (Scr) and Martin Cockcroft (2) joining Whitworth it promises to be a much closer affair tomorrow with at least half a dozen teams in with a realistic chance of winning.
Meltham, who captured The Founders Trophy in 2006 at Crosland Heath and were fifth last year, will be looking to push Bradley Hall all the way and have players in the team who have all represented the Union; father and son pair of Toby and Mark Garrett, Graham McLean and the big hitting Alex Battye will all look to tame the undulating Mirfield based course.
Huddersfield Golf Club have not won the event since 2000 but after their second place finish last term will be confident of repeating their success of Woodsome Hall eight years ago. Richard Oddy, a member of that winning side, will lead Fixby's team with current Union Matchplay Champion Richard Broadley, Neil Williams and Charles Webb making up the quartet.
New Fixby Club Manager and runner-up at the recent Earl of Dartmouth Trophy, Tim Seaton, along with recent Club Challenge Bowl winner and Union member Dan Stocchero, new recruit from Lighcliffe and fellow Union player Fraser Scholefield, another Union player Jarred Ellison, current PS Cockroft holder Mark England, Brad Tupman and Edward Brown all miss out.
West End, third at Willow Valley, are likely to field the same side of Steve Martin, Chris Ingham, Frank Greaves and Ian Marsland although the in form Sam Bridges may force his way into the side, with Marsland missing out, and the Halifax based side will no doubt be strong contenders for the title.
2005 winners Woodsome Hall, two strokes behind West End last year in fourth, will go with Chris Dyson, Richard Holt, Graham Cox and seem certain to give Adam Durie the nod as the fourth member of the squad.
Meanwhile Crosland Heath will look to become only the second side to clinch both the Second Division Scratch Team Championship and the main event in the same season. The club won the former earlier this month (see article) at Elland Golf Club and after their recent performance in the Yorkshire Fifth Division Team Championship (see article) will be high on confidence. Since the second division was introduced in 1996 only one club, West End in the inaugural year, have completed the double.
The Heath will probably field Bob Wallace, Tery Goldstein and Roger Morris with Alan Dyson or youngster Michael Lawrie joining the team as the fourth man. Their decision to field a side of youth at Willow Valley backfired last year with relegation so the experienced Dyson will be the likely man to figure.
It would also be wise not to rule out a home victory for The Pinnacle club as local knowledge could play a significant part in determining the eventual winners on the tricky layout. Dewsbury will almost certainly start with Union regulars Ben Crowther, the Union Matchplay Champion in 2005, and local amateur course record holder Edward Battye with the club's trainee assistant Adam Crum as the third member. Craig Darbyshire, who played at Willow Valley last year and was part of the team that finished second behind Meltham at Crosland Heath in 2006, is likely to make up the home team.
The tee times are available here for the championship where four clubs will also be relegated back to the Second Division Team Championship.

Dewsbury Dinner Fiasco now Closed!
It would appear that the 'fiasco' surrounding the Mirfield Civic Dinner that unfairly entangled Dewsbury District Golf Club has now finally been laid to rest.
There has been significant public interest in the the goings on at The Pinnacle golf club after alleged derogatory comments, that were made by some of the guests attending the dinner held in March, were brought to light in The Mirfield Reporter and indeed on our own news blog (see article) earlier this month.
The annual dinner has been held at Dewsbury District Golf Club for a number of years with Club Manager Mick Thorpe commenting, "We have received commendations each year about the food, service and facilities. The Golf Club received no complaints at all either on the night or there after."
However, concern was raised by the clubs committee that some of the comments could have been interpreted as uncomplimentary towards the golf club and the services it provides - despite a letter published in The Mirfield Reporter, from councillor Stephen Grant, exonerating the club from any negativity.
Since the recent publishing's the golf club has received a letter from the incoming Mayor, Keith Sibbald, firstly to make payment for the outstanding balance which had been until then withheld and to also express concern over the unfortunate situation. In his letter he commented, "There has been unfortunate reporting, in the local press, of the debate on this issue at the last Town Council Meeting and Dewsbury Golf Club has been unfairly drawn into the matter." He goes on to say, "I have attended at least 20 functions at the Golf Club, including my daughter's wedding reception, and at all times the professionalism of the staff, the quality of the service and the high standard of the food presented has been of the highest levels. I consider the Civic Dinner met those high standards."
Thorpe closed by saying, "We would like to take this opportunity to put matters straight and also thank people for speaking out on our behalf. We are still open, still providing top quality service at very reasonable prices and will continue to do so in the future. We have already received a booking for next years Civic Dinner and look forward to working with The Mirfield Town Mayor, Keith Sibbald in providing an excellent night for all concerned."

Colcombe Makes Top Ten in Yorkshire Boys

Longley Park's Matthew Colcombe (pictured above) earned a creditable top ten finish in the Yorkshire Boys Championship at Pannal Golf Club on Wednesday.

The new 18-hole layout, designed by respected architect Jonathan Gaunt, overcame problems associated with public footpaths and bridleways, badger setts, and archaeological artifacts in the form of a 'medieval ridge and furrow' farming system.
Gaunt commented, "This project involved the redevelopment of the existing 18-hole course at Silkstone Golf Club in South Yorkshire. The work comprised the construction of seven new holes on dramatically undulating farmland, adjacent to the existing 18-hole course, along with the remodelling of a further four holes to eradicate historic safety problems and steep climbs."
The new course measures 6648 yards with a par of 73. Arguably, it will have some of the most challenging golf holes in Yorkshire with some photographs pictured below.

Panesar is Masters Champion at Crow Nest Park
The 2008 Gents and Ladies Masters Champions were decided at Crow Nest Park Golf Club on a windy Bank Holiday Monday. Club Captain Raj Panesar won the men's competition with Eddie Hirst in second place and Andy Mitchell in third spot. Stephanie Binns was crowned the Ladies Champion and Shaun Higgins won the par three prize on an enjoyable day for all participants.
The 'Masters' event is open to all lady and male members who have won a Major Competition since the golf club opened in 1995 and 40 competitors played in this years tournament.
It is no wonder that Panesar, who is entering his sixth year as a member at Crow Nest Park after only taking up the game in 1995, was in the prizes as he is clearly a talented all round sportsman. Of Indian descent, but a Yorkshireman through and through, he was a three times Bradford Champion at badminton by the age of 21 and is also a former Bradford Champion at squash when he used to play semi-professional in the Yorkshire premier league. He also has a love for cricket and in the 1970's had trials with Yorkshire and has since served on many committees and organised four international tours.
Competitions Secretary, Mick Walton said, "The blustery conditions made the course very challenging. I would like to thank all the competitors and congratulations to the winners."
The trophies and prizes were presented by the Lady Captain, Pam Hollingworth and Les Holmes, who's idea it was to create the Masters competitions. Reining Champion, Mark Widdop, handed the trophy over to his successor, Mr Panesar.

Second for Seaton at Woodsome
Experienced campaigner Tim Seaton came close to capturing The Earl of Dartmouth Trophy over Woodsome Hall's golf course yesterday after steady rounds of 73 and 75 in difficult conditions. One of the oldest competitors in the field, at 52 years of age, he produced solid golf to finish as runner-up to Bradford's Sam Jewell at the Fenay Bridge course.
In gusty conditions Seaton (pictured above on the right with Woodsome Hall Captain Geoff Headey) posted just one solitary birdie as he made mostly pars in his eight over par total of 148 just two strokes behind the winner who is the son of Derby County Football Club manager Paul. He secured second place, despite a triple bogey six on the par three third hole during his second round, mainly because he covered his back nine holes during the afternoon in an impressive one under par 34.
On a day when scoring was made extremely difficult by a combination of very strong winds, firm greens and tricky pin positions Seaton, playing in only the third grouping out, used all his experience to combat the wind and posted a total that for a long period looked like it would not be beaten.
Seaton, a former England Boys International, is relatively new to the local circuit after joining Huddersfield Golf Club as their General Manager just over a month ago from Headingley. He is a former Cambridgeshire County Champion, has represented his county over 250 times and is a winner of several notable championships including The Gog Magog Trophy, a competition played annually at the golf club where he is also a member and victor of their club championship on nine occasions. He has also recently won the Cambridgeshire Wheel Salver, a matchplay event that he captured in 2006 beating Jon Osler in the final.
Doncaster born Seaton, also a trained accountant, trailed by two strokes at the halfway stage from Howley Hall's Luke Maguire as did home club member Graham Cox. However, when Maguire 'no returned' during his afternoon round and Cox failed to produce the magic of his morning effort it left Seaton as the regions highest placed finisher.
Seaton's display will have given Fixby Scratch Team Captain, David Jagger, something to consider regarding selection for team matches after his performance left fellow club members Richard Broadley, Brad Tupman, Fraser Scholefield and Dan Stocchero trailing in his wake. Although it is still expected that Broadley, Richard Oddy, Charles Webb and Neil Williams, who withdrew from the Woodsome event at short notice, will line up for the club at Dewsbury in The HHDUGC Scratch Team Championship on Sunday.
Woodsome Hall member, defending champion and also the winner in 2006, Chris Dyson, was unable to pull off what would have been a dramatic hattrick of wins as he recorded scores of 85 and 75 for a total of 160 to finish down the field. Richard Holt, also a member at Woodsome and playing with Seaton scored rounds of 75 and 77 to finish on 152 and grab fifth place.
The difficulty in the scoring was proved when CSS for both rounds increased from the usual 69 to 72 and were deemed to be 'reduction only' rounds. More scores and information can be found in our Yorkshire Order of Merit section.

Longley Park Juniors into Second Round
Both Longley Park junior pairings progressed through to the second round of The HHDUGC Junior Foursomes Knockout. Their first team comfortably saw off Hebden Bridge by a margin of 6&5 whilst their second string won by 2&1 in a much closer match against Outlane.
Both Saddleworth sides also progressed to the next round, to be played at either Ryburn or Elland, after victories over Crosland Heath and Meltham. The only other golf club with both sides still in the competition is Crow Nest Park after one team received a bye into the second round and the other beat Huddersfield 2&1.

Whiteley Helps Meltham Defend Jack Sykes Trophy
A jubilant Meltham celebrated yesterday after their golf club won The Jack Sykes Trophy for the second year running as they successfully defended the HHDUGC Handicap Team Championship at a howling Saddleworth Golf Club.
Strong winds made the Oldham based golf course virtually unplayable at times as the scoring soared and the CSS deemed the competition as a 'reductions only' event. However, Meltham dug deep in the tough conditions and triumphed on a card count back after equalling Huddersfield Golf Club's total of 357 in the four-man team event where all scores count. Todmorden finsihed in third position six strokes back but two ahead of Hanging Heaton in fourth
Each club in the union is represented by a team and must have one player of not less than 8 handicap, one player of not less than 10 handicap, one player of not less than 12 handicap and one player of not less than 14 handicap. All gross scores then count with the lowest accumulative total winning.
Three of the quartet that won last year at West End Golf Club were present again this year. Steven Whiteley, fresh from his recent win in the Wednesday Society and brother of the tournaments sponsor Robert, fired a gross 80 which also won him the best individual nett prize. Andrew Steel and Martin Butterworth scored 87 and 96 respectively as they had the winning feeling again. The fourth member of the squad, who did not play last year replacing Dave Buckley, was Andrew Hirst who posted a 94.

Did Anybody Spot Parnell on the BBC?
How many of you watched the conclusion of The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club yesterday and thought that you recognised a familiar face in the crowd?
Well, it was indeed no other than current Captain of the PGA and Head Professional at Bradley Park Golf Club, Dr. Parnell Reilly. The 57 year old was very close to the action as the drama unfolded on the final green at the Surrey course where Miguel Angel Jimenez triumphed over Oliver Wilson at the second play-off hole.
The television camera's regularly switched their attention to Mrs Jimenez as she nervously watched from the side of the green .... and stood just next to her was Reilly!! He could also be seen, wearing a burgundy blazer, at the presentation table in the background as Gary Lineker interviewed the Spanish winner. A full report about the tournament and the interview with Lineker can be seen here.
Last year we did a Q&A Interview with Parnell which we're sure that new readers will find very interesting. You may also be wondering about our 'doctorate' pre-fix for the experienced professional golfer ... if so, you can read about the honour awarded to him by the Huddersfield University here.

Phil and his son Mark formed half of the team that romped to victory with a massive 91 points in the team stableford competition. With course conditions being excellent the standard of golf was exceptionally good. Runners up with 89 points were John Cryer, Dave Earnshaw, Mick Tiffany and Paul Scothorne. In third place were husband and wife Barbara and Peter Horrocks, Helen Pearson and Chris Stirk.
Twenty two teams competed for the trophy which was inaugurated in 2005 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Hove Edge golf club and is played for annually. The trophy takes its name from the owners of Crow Nest Park, Marjorie and Richard Harrison.

Golf Club Caught up in Council Row
Dewsbury District Golf Club has become entangled in an ongoing row over Mirfield Town Council's decision to cast a vote of no confidence against their outgoing Mayor, Bob Bennett.
The decision, taken on the 13th of May, was proposed by Finance and General Purposes Committee chairman, Stephen Grant, because it was deemed that Bennett had acted against a resolution given by the committee stating that it would not pay for the civic dinner, which was hosted by Dewsbury District Golf Club, because complaints about the dinner were being investigated.
Grant had alleged that complaints were made by guests attending the event about the entertainment and the food being bland. Grant also said that issues were raised about the bar bill and stated it was decided that payment would be withheld until the complaints had been investigated.
However Bennett sanctioned the payment of nearly £2,000 saying, "What I did was in perfectly good faith to support the golf club because they had every right to expect to be paid. Not one of these people has given me anything in writing so I can go to the golf club and say this is what is being complained about."
A full report about the vote of no confidence, that was published on the 16th May, can be read on The Mirfield Reporter website.
However yesterday (23rd May) the story developed further when a number of letters were published in the newspaper with one from Grant exonerating the golf club of any negativity saying, "Firstly, I would like to make it absolutely clear that Mirfield Town Council is in no way questioning the service, quality or dedication of Dewsbury and District Golf Club. It has been rightly noted the club has served the council extremely well in the past with high quality civic dinners. The arguments in regard to this civic dinner were related entirely to the choices and actions of Bob Bennett. It would be very wrong to connect the golf club with any negative viewpoint in this."
The selection of letters which can be viewed in full on The Mirfield Reporter website also included a letter from Bennett which read, "Regarding payment to Dewsbury District Golf Club I have taken no action without referral and the money paid belonged to those who attended the dinner. It was private money. I consulted with others not least Coun Sibbald who countersigned the cheque to allow payment as two signatures are required. Despite repeated requests to other councillors who attended the event I have not received a single written signed complaint, and no complaints were made until four weeks after the event."
Another letter from an anonymous writer added, "In defence of the Golf Club, I have used this venue many times and never been disappointed."

Moore and Carman Off the Pace
Gareth Moore, from Hanging Heaton, and Fixby's Paul Carman failed to make an impression on the leaders in the second round of the Cumbrian Classic Pro-Am at Carlilse Golf Club.
Carman did improve by four shots on his opening round of 79 yesterday but his 14-over par total was a distant 20 strokes behind the winner, Simon Edwards, representing Clays/Excel Golf. Overnight leader Garry Key added a 72 to his first round 63 to finish in second place a stroke behind Edwards.
Moore posted an 80 on the second day, which added to his 74 at Penrith Golf Club the previous day, left him level with Carman for the tournament as the pair shared 27th position.

A Rush for Saturday Morning Tee Times?
There could be a rush for morning tee-times on Saturdays from August onwards. That is after a number of local golfers have snapped up cut price season tickets at Huddersfield Town Football Club for next season.
A £100 Season Ticket offer run by the club and subsidised by new Chairman-Elect, Dean Hoyle, and current Chairman, Ken Davy, has more than doubled the number of tickets sold compared to last season with the current tally standing at a record 15,430.
A number of golfers that we have talked to have taken advantage of the deal and come three o'clock on a Saturday afternoon they will be taking their seat in either the Antich, Direct Golf UK or Fantastic Media stands down at The Galpharm Stadium instead of pegging it up on the first at their local golf course.
More information about the success of the season ticket deal is available on the Huddersfield Town Football Club official website.

Valuable Points as Hanson Makes Top Ten
Chris Hanson's magnificent score of 66 (see report) in the final round of the Faithlegg EuroPro Tour event in Ireland earned him another top ten finish and £750.
After just making the cut right on the +1 mark and playing in the first group out this morning, he carded the third lowest round of the day to finish the competition on five-under. His stunning 66, which included eight birdies, leapt him up from tied 39th to joint ninth. The event was won by Noel Fox in a play-off after he and Elliot Saltman had tied on nine-under par for the tournament.
The final day flourish will have given Hanson some valuable points in the order of merit and should move him up from his current position of 21st. It is the Crosland Heath professional's third top ten finish this season after good results also at Wensum Valley and Collingtree Park.
The tour moves to Devon next month for The Bovey Castle Championship. Hanson won there in 2006 and finished in third place last year, after going into the final round leading the event, so hopefully the 22 year old is hitting form just at the right time for another victory.

Storming Hanson Makes Move with 66
Chris Hanson made a giant leap up the leaderboard at the EuroPro Tour event currently being played at Faithlegg Golf Club in Ireland.
After only making five birdies during his opening two rounds which had left him well down the field on one-over par for the tournament Hanson stormed through the field in his third and final round by scoring a magnificent six-under par 66.
His superb round included eight birdies and just two single bogeys. He got off to a great start posting red figures on the opening three holes and then parred his way to the turn. Dropped shots on holes ten and twelve looked like it would be another frustrating day for the Crosland Heath professional but then a run of five birdies in a row catapulted him into the higher echelons of the leaderboad. Hanson finished the competition on five-under par.
Play is still in progress with joint leaders sitting at eight-under par as Hanson currently lies in a tie for eighth place. However, he could drop down the field as several players are still out on the course completitng their back nines but he will be hopeful of hanging on to a top ten spot. Leader in the clubhouse at the moment is Northern Ireland's Damian Mooney who carded nine birdies in his round of 63.

Hanson Drops Off Pace but Makes Cut

Marsden Golf Club have some great offers at the moment for those golfers looking to play at a different course and at the same time sample an Alister MacKenzie layout.

'Thank-you' from Meltham
Meltham Golf Club will return to full greens on Saturday 24th May after a long period of playing on temporary putting surfaces due to damage on every one of their greens. Last October incorrect chemical treatment resulted in the Thick Hollins Hall club 'losing' their usually slick greens and they have been out of action ever since.
However, some local clubs have rallied round and helped by allowing courtesy of their own course for Meltham members over the winter and early spring. This, however, will no longer be available once the course returns to its original layout. A statement on the clubs official website said that they would like to thank all those clubs who supported them throughout their problems.

Ogden Looking Forward to Open Week
Halifax Golf Club are all set for what promises to be another fabulous open week at the undulating moorland course laid out originally by James Braid in the early 20th Century.
The festival, which starts a week on Saturday, offers the opportunity for local golfers to play the testing layout, in usually the best condition of the year, at some real value-for-money prices.
The Gents Fourball kicks the week off on the 31st May and is just £22 per pair to enter. The following day sees the Mixed Greensomes (afternoon) and Junior Open (morning) with costs at £22 per couple and £5 per person respectively for each event.
Monday allows a full day for the links to recover and the opportunity for members to play the course before the Open Tri-Am (£27 per team) on the Tuesday and the Ladies Ogden Cup (£9 each) on the Wednesday. An Individual Stableford takes place on the Thursday (£10 each) before the finale of the week, The Ogden Cup - a 36 hole individual medal (£22 each), takes place on Saturday 7th June.
Entries to The Ogden Cup are strictly limited to 90 golfers so an early entry is encouraged as are entries to all other events which are now quickly filling up. Entry Forms are available by clicking on the competition names above and must be submitted as quickly as possible to secure a tee-time in any of the tournaments.

Déjà vu in Opening Day Defeat for Union
The Yorkshire Inter District Union League kicked off on Sunday with the Halifax, Huddersfield and District Union entertaining the Bradford Union at Halifax Golf Club.
With the wind in totally the opposite direction from normal at the Ogden links the conditions proved to be very difficult and didn’t favour the home team as they narrowly went down by 17 points to 19 - Déjà vu to the opening game of the 2007 season against Bradford at Skipton Golf Club.
The morning foursomes were evenly contested with three wins for each side. The local winners were Iain Powell & Sam Bridges, Jim Fairhurst & Graeme McLean and Frank Greaves & Ryan Greenwood. Young Greenwood stepping into the team at short notice on the morning of the contest due to James Thompson being involved in a car accident the night before. Ben Crowther & Jarred Ellison held a healthy lead going into the back nine holes but unfortunately lost on the last hole, this was to prove to be a pointer as to what was going to happen in the afternoon singles.
The home team lost the top three singles with Union Champion Richard Broadley bogeying the last hole to lose his match after being 1 up with just four holes to play. However, wins by Fairhurst and Crowther got the HHDUGC team back into the match although a further loss by McLean, also losing on the last after being 1 up with two to play, sounded the alarm bells for the side captained by Meltham's Chris Mear.
A fine win by Bridges made the game neck and neck with the knowledge that Greaves and Matthew Colcombe were well up in their matches but Ellison was struggling in his tie. The result was to hinge on two games and with Birkett 1 down with one to play but making a battling par four up the last to halve his game still left HHDUGC with a chance. The last match on the course was young Ryan Greenwood, who battled to the 17th tee all square, but unfortunately lost the testing par three hole and when only able to halve the last Ryan and the team had gone down by the narrowest of margins.
Mear commented afterwards, "The match result proved to be a big disappointment to me when a bit more application would have seen us through to victory. The final three holes of the matches proving to be our undoing." He went on to say, "Although the Bradford Union were relatively inexperienced they battled to the end digging deep to win the match for the their team."
The next match is away against the Leeds Union at Howley Hall on June the 8th where only a victory will do if Mear's men are to mount a challenge for the IDU title.

Wrightson, Paul and Travis Feature at Brancepeth
Three handicapper, Pat Wrightson, led the qualifiers in the ladies Northern Counties Veteran Championship at Brancepeth Castle last week. The Huddersfield Golf Club member carded a gross 75 which also helped Yorkshire win the Gross Shield, an event where each counties three lowest gross scores are totaled, with the help of fellow Fixby member Sandra Paul (80) and Hilary Smyth (81) from Pannal. Wrightson and Paul also figured in the team which claimed the Nett Shield as they joined Clare Wish (Lindrick) in the winning Yorkshire trio. In all 36 members represented Yorkshire in the tournament for scratch to 16 handicap senior golfers.
Paul, a five handicapper, finished runner-up in the qualifying stage with her score of 81 but both she and Wrightson failed to progress through the matchplay rounds the following day which was won by Cheshire's Sue Dye.
A stableford event was held on the second day for non-qualifiers in which Crosland Heath's Gill Travis featured strongly with 35 points to capture second place.

Hereford has Rabbits Day to Remember
Former Royal Navy seaman, Tony Hereford, had a day to remember as members of Crow Nest Park Golf Club competed in his Rabbits Captain's Day on Saturday. Sporadic showers could not dampen the spirits at the nine hole course based in Hove Edge as all sections of the club keenly contested their respective sections.
Hereford, from Rastrick, thanked everyone for taking part in his event and congratulated all the winners. At the presentation, where there was live entertainment and a disco, he also commented, "It has been a truly remarkable week for Crow Nest Park Rabbits Section because last Thursday a team comprising of Peter Horrocks, John Cryer, David Hawkesworth and myself won the Halifax, Huddersfield & District Rabbit Golf Association President's Trophy for the first time in Crow Nest Park's history. It was particularly gratifying to receive the trophy from our Club President and President of The Association, John Turner."
The day was also special for junior member Ryan Jones who scored an ace on the par three 8th hole. However, it wasn't so special for father, Steve, who in line with tradition, provided all members present in the nineteenth with a drink!

Hanson has Found Putting Boots for Ireland Trip
Chris Hanson is in an upbeat mood as he travels to Ireland next week in the latest leg of the EuroPro Tour.
The Crosland Heath professional believes that he is just a round the corner from competing for a win again after securing a top ten finish in last weeks event at Collingtree Park. He said, "I am seeing John (Eyre) for a lesson on Sunday morning before we get the ferry over to Ireland. That little session will be all it takes to get me back to where my swing was."
Hanson has been a little out of sorts in events so far this season although was pleased with how he ground out a score in the third round of the latest event, after a poor start, with two chip-ins! He Commented, "You just never know what’s going to happen in golf and if you stick in there your luck may change. It's the first time I have ever chipped in twice in one round, that got me under par for the round and 5 under for the tournament."
On the visit to Faithlegg he added, "Next week the tour is out in Ireland and I can’t wait to get going again, now I have found my putting boots. As soon as the game gets back to where it was I will be competing for a win!"

Great Finish for Hanson Brings Top Ten Spot
Two birdies and an eagle in the last six holes gave Chris Hanson a reason to smile in the latest EuroPro Tour event at Collingtree Park.
The professional from Crosland Heath Golf Club was heading for a place outside of the top 20 until he pulled a birdie-eagle-par-birdie-par-par finish out of the bag to lie in joint tenth position at the close of the tournament.
Bogeys on the second, fourth and eleventh in a round of 71 looked like costing him a significant amount of money but the recovery brought him a cheque for £725. The event was won by Alan Murray from Greystones Golf Club with a total of eleven under par. Hanson finsihed five under for the competition.

Hanson Recovers to be in with a Shout at Collingtree
Chris Hanson recovered well from a double-bogey early on in his second round of the EuroPro Tour event at Collingtree Park.
Starting on the 10th tee and after four straight pars the Crosland Heath professional made a nightmare seven on the 543 yard par five 14th. However, he then fired back to back birdies to balance the books for his round. A further birdie on his ninth hole cancelled out a dropped shot on the previous hole as he reached the turn level par.
Birdies on his 13th and 18th holes and a bogey on his 16th resulted in a one under par round of 71 to move him to four-under for the tournament. Although he is five strokes behind joint leaders Daniel Brooks and Michael Hempstock he lies in a place for 11th position and a round in the mid sixties tomorrow will see him challenge for the title.

Chris is Chasing the Fox
Chris Hanson is part of the chasing pack in the EuroPro Tour event at Collingtree Park after the first round. A creditable three-under par score of 69 left the Crosland Heath professional in a tie for eighth place just two strokes behind joint leaders Noel Fox and John Bandurak.
Hanson raced to three under par early on in his round with birdies at the first, fourth and sixth holes and despite a stutter on the seventh he cancelled that bogey out with another birdie on nine to make the turn in a three under 33. The inward half was a little more subdued with mostly pars, a solitary birdie on the 14th cancelled out a dropped shot on the par four 11th.
The third season professional, sponsored by Go2Sport.com hit only 11 greens in regulation but will be pleased with his tally of just 25 putts for the entire round.

Hanging Heaton Halted
Hanging Heaton's climb through the Yorkshire Team leagues was halted at Dore and Totley Golf Club. After qualifying for the 7th Division at Wath back in April and then being promoted from that division into the 6th Division at Bondhay they fell back to earth with relegation to the seventh tier last week.
The nine hole club missed out on a third successive promotion by a large margin (31 strokes) but only missed out on retaining their 6th division status by ten shots and one place as they ended up in 13th position out of 18 starters.
There was also no joy for Dewsbury as they failed to make a return to the 5th division which they were relegated from last term. They, however, were not relegated after finishing in eight place and five strokes off a top six and promotion spot. Low Laithes Golf Club won the division by a single stroke from Hessle.
