Golfer of the Year:
Richard Broadley (Huddersfield): Richard successfully defended his HHDUGC Individual Matchplay title, the Union's premier event, when beating Andrew Whitworth at Halifax Golf Club. It is the third time that Broadley has won the competition in total.
Helen Pearson (Crow Nest Park): Helen has had a fabulous season winning multiple competitions including the Lady Captain's Day prize at her club. In all she captured three of the Hove Edge club's 'Majors' and reduced her handicap from 24 to 19. She was team captain of the successful Crow Nest Park ladies team that won the Halifax, Huddersfield Ladies Evening League title. However, the real highlight of her season came when winning the LGU Silver Medal Final at Hartlepool Golf Club in June. She has clearly come a long way in the short time that she has been playing.
Lewis Howell (Willow Valley): Captain of the Willow Valley Junior team, Lewis won the junior Scratch Foursomes and reached the final of the Junior Individual Matchplay beating the no.1 seed en route. Lewis also defeated Matthew Colcombe over his home course and made his debut for the HHDUGC Union Junior Team. Part of the team that won through to La Manga he has also shown great consistency and sportsmanship throughout the year.
Brad Tupman (Huddersfield): Brad won the PS Cockroft Trophy at West End and posted some excellent scores at Fixby which included winning the Captain's Prize. He was also the lowest scorer in the Fixby side that finished fifth in the Yorkshire Team Championship.
Helen Searle (West End/Huddersfield): Helen helped lead Yorkshire to glory in the English Counties Championship and England to victory in the Girls Home International series. She was runner-up in the Yorkshire Ladies Junior Championship and produced a sparkling performance to finish as runner-up in the main Yorkshire Ladies Championship.
Andy Wilford (Outlane): Andy led the scratch team to their second successive league title and won Outlane's own Golfer of the Year with a record score over the season. He also equalled the course record at the Slack Lane club.
Rochelle Morris (Crosland Heath): Rochelle, 13 years old, has dramatically lowered her handicap from 19 to single figures this season and has played for Yorkshire several times. She has had great success in various competitions, especially in the Ladies’ Section at Crosland Heath.
Nicholas Marsh (Elland): Nicholas won the HHDUGC individual junior matchplay title at the end of August beating Lewis Howell 7&6 in the final at Halifax Golf Club. This was the first time the junior had entered and qualified for the event. He is one of the youngest ever winners of the title, if not the youngest, at just 13 years old. On route to the final he beat some of the most talented juniors in the district, who were much older than himself and who play on a regular basis for the district golf team. He also finished in the top 4 of the U14 section in the Yorkshire U16 boys championship held at the York Golf Club in July.
Shaun Lang (Bradley Hall): During 2008 Shaun won the Rabbit Golfer of the Year which was based on the results of a number of competitions throughout the season, he also won the Rabbits Shield and the Rabbit Captains Cup. In addition to the above he was a member of the successful Bradley Hall Rabbits League team who took the B Section championship and were runners-up in the Rabbits League Knockout Cup.
Team of the Year:
Willow Valley Juniors: The Willow Valley Juniors have had a fantastic year. They represented England in the Junior Team Home Nations Championship after winning the Union Junior league final. They also captured the Union Junior Foursomes title.
Woodsome Hall Seniors Team: They won the Lawrence Batley Seniors League for the third year in a row.
Outlane Handicap Team: They won their second successive league title achieved with a team sporting many new players. The team had to win their last match by at least six points to finish top and this was achieved under great pressure.
Halifax Scratch Team: Successive promotions have seen the Ogden club rise through the ranks and reach the top division after a last gasp victory in the final match of the season at Dewsbury.
Crow Nest Ladies Team: They won the Halifax & Huddersfield Ladies Evening League for the second time in three years, having also reaching the semi final in 2007.
