Home Victory for Hall Duo in Alliance

Halifax Bradley Hall members Terry Jackson and Kevin Barker claimed the Am-Am section of the latest Halifax, Huddersfield & District Golf Alliance meeting over their home course with an impressive 45 points earlier today.

The successful pairing came home two points ahead of long time leaders in the clubhouse Dave Stafford and Alan Dickinson from Todmorden. The Todmorden couple won a countback on the back-six from another home pair, P. Toon and M. Oldroyd to take the runners-up spot. In fourth place was N. Crowther and M. Atkinson from Outlane with 40 points.

A record 130 competitors participated in the event which saw excellent weather, particularly in the late morning and afternoon, bathing the players in warm sunshine for most of the day. The course held up very well to overnight rain and although some areas of the course remained wet, the competition went ahead on time and in good spirits. Participants commented about the greens saying they were excellent and running quicker than most in the area for this time of year.

With a sponsorship package agreed for the event prizes were given to the first four placings in both the Pro-Am and Am-Am. In the Professionals division, where tied scores are given joint placings, the winning pairings were Lee Shepherd and Rob Booth with their amateur partners Chris Nuttall and Steve Hopkinson respectively.

Nuttall made a nett birdie on the third to get the Willow Valley pair off to a good start which was built upon when Shepherd birdied the tough seventh and then the long eighth. Shepherd's eagle attempt on the par-five eighth just lipped out.

The winning pair then made a charge for home when Nuttall made nett birdies on 13,14 and 15 to take the duo to seven-under par. A dropped shot on the par-five 16th threatened their victory but two successive pars on the way home gave them a share of the spoils.

Nuttal told the Huddersfield Blog, "We thought we had blown any chance when making a mess of 16 to drop our first shots but managed to par in."

Tom Wild was third on his own with his amateur partner Gary Ward. For fourth position a card countback was used as six teams all finished on 39 points. With a back nine of 22, fourth spot went to the days sponsor Mr Dean Whitwam and his partner John Eyre of Woodsome Hall.

Pictured below are Eyre, Hopkinson, Whitwam and Bradley Hall Golf Club Vice Captain Nick Wheelwright. Wheelwright thanked the competitors for the excellent support of the Bradley Hall Alliance fixture and offered his appreciation to the Executive for staging the event at Bradley Hall, he said that he hoped he would be welcoming the Alliance back in the near future.

For the first time the event was sponsored by D.W.Developments. A photograph of the the Sponsors fourball by his sign on the first tee can be seen below. The people in order left to right are; Jim Baxter, Chris Hanson, Whitwam and Eyre.

With the sponsorship agreement there were also two nearest-the-pin competitions on the ninth and eighteenth holes. The first was won by Paul Newey from Ind Fixby with 4' 10" whilst the second was won by Mr. David Braithwaite from Marsden at 6' 6".

Alliance Assistant-Secretary James Washington said, "The Alliance would like to thank all the 130 competitors including our 16 professionals who played today and the Sponsor Dean Whitwam of D.W.Developments. The catering and hospitality was excellent from start to finish and both the indoor and outdoor staff ensured that the day was a complete success."
