Rugby Man Phil 'Drives-In' at Dewsbury

Phil Smith officially took tenure of his captaincy at Dewsbury District Golf Club yesterday morning when he completed a successful 'Drive-In'.

With the sun shining and an increasing number of onlookers the pressure and expectation grew as the moment approached. The good humoured banter from members around the first-tee grew silent as Smith took his stance and proceeded to hit his drive straight up the middle, carrying it a very creditable 194 yards uphill. As you can imagine he had a massive smile on his face once he looked up and saw where it had gone!

Mick Thorpe, General Manager at The Pinnacle Club, was at the Drive-In and told us, "Phil is not what would be seen as a 'normal' Golf Club Captain. He has had over 30 years in the transport industry and 8 years in the Royal Navy, having taken part in the Navy Field Gun competition at Earls Court."

Thorpe added, "He has also been involved in rugby for over 40 years playing his last match at the age of 47. He is still a regular visitor to the gym going three times a week, a total fitness fanatic. He is very enthusiastic about his role and the coming year in office which is refreshing in this present climate of doom and gloom merchants."

Good Luck Phil in your year as Captain of Dewsbury District Golf Club!
