Cumberwell Park's Steve Surry won The Michael Ward UK Open at Collingtree Park today snatching victory from overnight leader Chris Hanson who missed the chance to capture his second PGA EuroPro title.
On a tough scoring day Surry heaped real pressure on Hanson from the start and was four under par after the 11th whilst Hanson ran into difficulties with a bogey on his opening hole and although he cancelled that out with a birdie at the third, a bogey at five and a double at the par three eighth saw his lead reduce.
A battling back-nine looked like it might still be enough for Hanson leaving him one ahead going down the final hole. However, disaster struck when his drive caught the wind and finished out of bounds and although his provisional found the fairway his approach to the green landed in the water ending any hopes of victory.
“I’m obviously disappointed but I was 100 per cent committed today and it just wasn’t there for me,” said Hanson. “I can still take a lot from the tournament – from leading and being in contention to my first two rounds where I played really well.”
