Calvert Impresses at Collingtree

Tom Calvert of Huddersfield New College golf academy finished in the top 10 (8th) of the Intercollegiate Order of Merit final which was held at Collingtree Park on May 12th.

Tom qualified for this event by finishing 4th in the Northern section of the tour. This consisted of five events and was based on gross scores. Finishing in the top ten at Collingtree was a major achievement for Tom as many of the golfers in the competition were scratch or better.

Calvert posted rounds of 79 in the morning and 72 in the afternoon (71 was the best score by anyone all day). These were good scores in the conditions as it was very windy and the greens were hard. The course was set up similar to the Europro event held the week before at the same venue and the difficult nature of the course was illustrated by the fact that only one of the professionals playing finished under par.

Sam Bridges also qualified for the event but suffering from an injury finishing in 25th place.

This is the second year of the golf academy at the college and it provides an opportunity for talented golfers to receive specialist coaching and good quality competition as well as academic qualifications. There are still some places available for the next academic year and anyone who is interested should contact Jeff Pawson at the college via email: J.Pawson@huddnewcoll.ac.uk
