The Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union of Golf Clubs senior team were left to rue a missed opportunity at Fixby yesterday in their latest Yorkshire IDU League game against a plucky East Riding side. What looked like an unassailable lead at one point turned sour as the day progressed and the Union's elite had to settle for a frustrating 18-18 draw.
With five home club members in the 12-man side Team Captain, Chris Mear, had predicted before the contest that these players would hold the key to success over a side that got off to flyer in their opening game against Teesside at Scarborough South Cliff the previous month. That prediction rang true with 12 of the 18 points coming from Fixby men - almost enough to edge his side over the winning line.
Leading 9-3 after the foursomes, thanks to wins by Richard Broadley & Andy Shaw, Danny Stocchero & Brad Tupman, Sam Bridges & Frank Greaves and Ben Crowther & David Stafford as well as a halved match for Graham McLean & Chris Ingham, all looked rosy in the home camp at lunch. And when Broadley and Shaw (both pictured) notched wins, in the opening two singles matches, only a further six points were required for a first victory of the season.
Two more Fixby members, Stocchero and Tupman, added four of those points to the tally following their middle order victories and with Hebden Bridge's Powell adding another point - in game number four - it simply seemed a matter of time before the East Riding's resistance would crumble. But the East Coast side's never say die attitude gave them wins in the remaining seven ties and the most unlikely of draws.
