Broadley Bounces Back

Richard Broadley bounced straight back from the disappointment of missing out on a first Union strokeplay championship last weekend by capturing The Earl of Dartmouth Trophy for the second time in his career at Woodsome Hall yesterday.

Broadley (pictured above with WHGC Club Captain Graham Cox and tournament organiser Rob Scollick) narrowly missed out on capturing The PS Cockroft Trophy at Dewsbury District on Sunday when he was on the wrong end of a card countback against home player Mark Hepworth. However, the Fixby star left nothing to chance as he fired a blistering five-under par 65 in the morning to set the pace in the Yorkshire Order of Merit event.

Playing in the first group out he blazed seven birdies in his first round as he tamed the Fenay Bridge course presented in excellent condition on a benign day. And when he added a more conventional 71, in more blustery conditions during the afternoon, a two stroke victory awaited him over home member Matthew Broadbent who scored 68 and 70.

2008 Yorkshire Amateur champion, Richard Law from Low Laithes, carded a 69 and 72 for third place out of the 78 competitors. Plus-two handicapper, Craig Cuthbert, posted rounds of 69 and 73 for fourth spot whilst Steve Brennan captured valuable order of merit points by finishing fifth with 73 and 70.

Plus-one man Andy Shaw, a new recruit to Huddersfield from Bradley Hall, took the best afternoon prize with a 71 and home member James Graham, a buyer at local golf retailer Direct Golf UK, won the best 36-hole nett score with a 139 total off his handicap of 4.
