Stafford on Song but Union Lose at York

The Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union of Golf Clubs went down to a 25-11 defeat at a very wet Strensall golf course against York Union yesterday.

Team Manager Chris Mear said, "It was a very disappointing defeat. After the Foursomes it was very much a lost cause, we couldn't keep the ball in play and subsequently gave holes away."

The Meltham member and former President of the HHDUGC added, "In the Singles we again threw away winning positions. Sam Bridges was 1-up on the 16th tee but blazed his tee shot into the trees losing the hole and both players missed the last green but Martin Brown got up and down and Sam didn't."

There were however a few positives to take away from a third reversal of the season. Jamie Bower battled very hard to gain a half with partner Graham McLean in the morning and then again in the afternoon. Leading for most of the match he went two down to a birdie on the 15th but fought back winning 16 & 17 and even had an 8 foot putt to win the last but unluckily could not hole it and had to settle for a tie.

Frank Greaves was also back to his usual self, grinding away for a well deserved win and confidence booster. The same could be said for Dave Stafford (pictured) who probably turned in his best performance for the team winning his match 5 & 4 with a personal score of 1 under par.

Adam Cryer just missed out on his first win for the team, he stood on the 16th tee two up but hit his approach through the back of the green into a water hazard conceding the hole, both players then missed the par three 17th and both failed to get up and down, Cryer's approach to the 18th was a little strong onto the back fringe, a chip and two putts later and he had handed his opponent a half.
