Finals Day at Outlane

The six Outlane 'Major' finals were played in perfect conditions at the weekend which saw some entertaining and exciting golf.

Whilst three of the finals were completed well before the 36 holes the other three were close affairs and one of them, the Angora Trophy, kept everybody waiting for their buffet when the finalists had to play extra holes to determine the winner.

Snooker player Robert Armitage got the break he wanted when Stuart Chaplin just missed the green on the 37th hole and failed to match his opponents par to lose a very entertaining see-saw battle after coming from two down at the halfway stage and then putting his opening shot on the motorway to go three down at the 19th hole. He then battled back to level it up at the 36th hole but it was talented snooker player Robert who pocketed the trophy .

The Junior final saw last years losing finalist, Bryn Jenkinson, getting the better of the promising Mark Saville who played his part in the closing holes to keep Bryn on his toes where a superb tee shot on the short 16th won him the Stan Sykes Cup with a solid par that Mark could not match.

The Marchant Cup also went to the 34th hole and it was Tim Brook who succeeded against Peter Hey who did well to come from four down after 18 holes but was always playing catch up and couldn't continue his run after getting to just two behind with four to play.

Rabbit Captain Alan Henderson found Simon McKenzie in fine form and his four up at the halfway stage was extended to ten up with eight to play which ended the match.

The Day Bowls final which is a Foursome event saw Gordon Drysdale and Dale Brook having to play off a maximum of 20 handicap (they normally play off 24) and their halfway score of five down to Steve Beeby and Ted Cooper looked as if it was going to be an early finish but the former took the winners to the 29th hole before conceding.

The Sudworth Cup produced the best golf of the day and whilst it finished on the 30th hole Steve Howlett must have wondered what he had to do to win because Jarrad Hazelden was round in 67 gross and whilst Steve was three down after 18 holes the birdie bombardment continued in the afternoon. Steve played his part with regulation pars only to find Jarrad matching and even bettering then to win a superb match 7 and 6 on the 30th hole. The card showed the winner having only one bogey in the whole of the match.
