Magnificent Win Denies Leaders Yorkshire Title

A magnificent win for the Halifax Huddersfield Union against Yorkshire IDU League leaders Sheffield at Chesterfield on Sunday denied the South Yorkshire side a defence of the title they won so convincingly last year.

The HHDUGC rounded off their season in fine style with one of the best performances for many a year as they came from 8-4 down at lunch to record a memorable victory.

With Manager Chris Mear away on holiday team affairs were handled by West End's Frank Greaves (pictured above on the right) and he led from the front with two brilliant displays. His enthusiasm certainly spread throughout the team which included many young players that he currently or has managed at junior level.

Greaves & Brad Tupman and Adam Cryer & Matthew Colcombe scored impressive wins in the foursomes but defeats in the other four ties meant that a fourth defeat of the season looked on the cards for the Union's elite.

However, a stirring performance in the afternoon with a never say die attitude brought victories for; Greaves, Iain Powell, Andy Shaw, debutant Ben Adamson, Cryer and Andy Wilford. Vital halved matches for Tupman, Jamie Bower and Tom Goodair ensured a remarkable turnaround and a 19-17 triumph.

Union official and former President, Albert Guest from Woodsome Hall, commented, "This sets the format and perhaps the team for the 2010 season. It was really good to see the team members out on the course supporting the others after their matches had ended."

The defeat for Sheffield allowed East Riding to sneak in and win the league following their home win against Bradford who were also in with a shout of the title had they sprung a shock at Ganstead Park. Despite the victory the HHDUGC side dropped to seventh place as York and Leeds both won. See the final Yorkshire IDU League Table.
