Matchplay Finalists Decided

The 2009 finalists of the Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union of Golf Clubs Individual Matchplay Championship were decided at Fixby on Saturday.

An action-packed day of golf resulted in Huddersfield member Aaron Schnacke and Meltham player Jamie Bower reaching the final of the Union's premier event.

With home advantage Schnacke initially saw off number one seed and P.S. Cockroft champion, Mark Hepworth from Dewsbury, by a margin of 4&2. He then went on to spring the shock of the day when he disposed of Union regular Sam Bridges (West End) 2&1. Incidentally that was the margin that Bridges had defeated club-mate Ian Marsland in the morning quarter-final.

In the bottom half of the draw Bower denied defending champion and pre-tournament favourite, Richard Broadley, the chance to win three titles in a row (and a fourth in total) with a confident display that resulted in a 3&2 win.

Bower then clinched a place in the final with a dramatic extra time win over Todmorden's David Stafford. Level after regulation play the pair halved the first hole of sudden-death before the Yorkshire Boys player took the contest at the 20th hole. It was tough on Stafford who had earlier battled through against Toby Garrett by 3&2.

Bower will be hoping he can go one better than the last two Meltham members to reach the 36-hole final - Graham McLean went down to Ben Crowther in 2005 whilst Garrett lost out to Andrew Whitworth the following year. Whilst fellow youngster Schnacke will be aiming to keep the prestigious winners shield at Fixby Hall following Broadley's recent dominance.
