Record Breaking Phil Wins at Teesside

The Teesside Trophy was played on Sunday in very blustery conditions with heavy showers during the last two hours.

However that did not deter the winner, Phil Ridden, who broke the aggregate tournament record of 134 by one shot and equalled the course record with a 64 in his second round. Both these records had been held since 1998 by Grahame Storm.

City of Newcastle's Ridden trailed by two at the halfway stage following a round of 69 and then went on a birdie spree in the afternoon as he carded his 64. That left first round leader and fellow club-mate, S. Lee, six shots back in second place after he tagged a 72 to his opening 67.

Yorkshire Champion Nigel Sweet extended his lead in the order of merit race with rounds of 69 and 73 for third spot. 2008 Yorkshire Champion, Richard Law, kept the pressure on with back-to-back rounds of 73 for eight place.

Meanwhile Wheatley's Steve Brennan, third in the table, collected some points with rounds of 73 and 75 and with double points on offer in the season finale at Moortown on the 20th September is still in with a shout of defending his title.

Tournament organiser Mick Fleming said, "Congratulations to Paul on a fine two rounds of golf. We would like to thank all those who entered the competition and look forward to next years competition."
