Crow Nest Celebrate New Captains

Crow Nest Park Golf Club celebrated the start of the new season with a special weekend where five respective Captains all drove into office.

Martin Broadbent and Helen Pearson are the new Gents and Ladies Captains, whilst Peter Horrocks (Rabbits), Denis Hitchcock (Seniors) and Ben Adamson (Juniors) joined them on Saturday for the special celebration. Pictured above from the left; Adamson, Broadbent, Pearson, Hitchcock & Horrocks.

The weekend began with a 'Captain`s Thank-you' party on Friday evening that was attended by over 100 members and their guests. The following morning 104 golfers weathered the blustery conditions and welcomed the incoming Captains into office at the Hove Edge club. The members played a 9-hole Texas Scramble which was won by the 4-man team of John Haverstock, Janet Longbottom, Stephen May and Alesandro Gathardo. A nearest-the-pin competition was won by Trevor Mitchell.

The incoming captain, Martin Broadbent was presented with his Captains jacket by the outgoing Club Captain, Raj Panesar, at the presentation on Saturday evening. Broadbent is a local men who has been a member at Crow Nest since the course opened.

After a fabulous 2008 Pearson will be hoping that official duties do not deter from the quality of golf she produced last year as she will be defending three of the club's 'Major' competitions.

It would certainly appear that will not be the case as the following day Broadbent and Pearson teamed up to win the The Bader Cup, a foursomes competition. The successful Captains won on a countback beating four other couples.

Good Luck and best wishes to the five of you!

Rugby Man Phil 'Drives-In' at Dewsbury

Phil Smith officially took tenure of his captaincy at Dewsbury District Golf Club yesterday morning when he completed a successful 'Drive-In'.

With the sun shining and an increasing number of onlookers the pressure and expectation grew as the moment approached. The good humoured banter from members around the first-tee grew silent as Smith took his stance and proceeded to hit his drive straight up the middle, carrying it a very creditable 194 yards uphill. As you can imagine he had a massive smile on his face once he looked up and saw where it had gone!

Mick Thorpe, General Manager at The Pinnacle Club, was at the Drive-In and told us, "Phil is not what would be seen as a 'normal' Golf Club Captain. He has had over 30 years in the transport industry and 8 years in the Royal Navy, having taken part in the Navy Field Gun competition at Earls Court."

Thorpe added, "He has also been involved in rugby for over 40 years playing his last match at the age of 47. He is still a regular visitor to the gym going three times a week, a total fitness fanatic. He is very enthusiastic about his role and the coming year in office which is refreshing in this present climate of doom and gloom merchants."

Good Luck Phil in your year as Captain of Dewsbury District Golf Club!

New Member Beattie Wins First Comp of 2009

Saturday saw the first competition of the 2009 season at Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club when the gents March Stableford, with a field of 153 golfers, took part.

Despite cold winds and frequent wintry showers some good golf was in evidence, none more so than from James Beattie, a new member who has recently joined the Club from Outlane and was playing in his first competition. Whether unfamiliarity with the course and greens was a handicap to an even better score will be evidenced over the coming months but nevertheless he won the first division with a Stableford score of 39 points.

Beattie was closely followed by Terry Jackson (6 hcp), Geoff Pearson (15 hcp) and Phil Gatehouse (13 hcp), all of whom scored 38 points.

In Division Two there was an equally tight grouping of scores with the winner, Alex Copley (22 hcp) running up 40 points, one more than Doug Morgan (28 hcp) with 39.

Ruby Joy for Mr & Mrs Captain

The new Captain, Nick Wheelwright, was elected at the Annual General Meeting of Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club last night. The previous week, his wife Elaine, had been elected Ladies Captain at the Ladies A.G.M.

It is believed that this is the first time at Bradley Hall that a husband and wife had been captains of their respective sections during the same year.

Both Nick and Elaine have been members of the Club for over 20 years and it is the second time that Elaine has been the Lady Captain. Not to be outdone, Nick has previously served as the Captain of the Rabbits Section.

In addition, this summer the couple will also celebrate their Ruby Wedding and to commemorate these milestones they have instigated a new annual competition, the 'Ruby Trophy' the first playing of which will be on Saturday 16th May when all sections of the Club will be encouraged to take part.

Dewsbury Pair Lead the Way at Meltham Alliance

Dewsbury duo, Andrew Williams and Tristan Gurd, scored an excellent victory in the Am-Am section of yesterday's Alliance fixture at Meltham Golf Club. Playing off handicaps of 10 and 8 respectively the pair scored an impressive 42 points to win by just one point.

In fine weather, the pair played excellently, scoring two equal halves of 21 points. Highlights included gross birdies on the second, fourth and thirteenth. Their score was one better than the home pairing of Richard Clark and Terry Cowell who had a superb front nine of 22 points only to return back with 19 points including a bogey on the sixteenth. Clark (17 hcp) and Cowell (14hcp) were late replacements on the day and made the most of their opportunity.

In the Pro-Am section, Chris Hanson (Crosland Heath) proved a cut above the rest when he teamed up with Liam Brompton, an 11 handicapper from West End. Their winning partnership totalled a magnificent 44 points to take the section by four points in what was a flawless round of golf.

Hanson had no bogies all day and fired a total of six birdies including ones on the sixth, seventh, thirteenth and sixteenth. He gelled well with partner Brompton in what is his second victory in three outings, having taken top spot with Dave Rishworth at Crosland Heath just four weeks ago.

In second place, with 40 points, was Order Of Merit leader David Astin playing with his regular partner Andy Cryer. Had it not been for their four single pointers they would have certainly been pushing Hanson and Brompton all the way for top spot.

The second place finish consolidates Astin at the top of the Order of Merit and with just two events to go only Tom Wild could mathematically catch him now. However, the race for second place is a much tighter affair with four professionals in with a realistic chance of securing it.

At Meltham, the Alliance sponsored two nearest-the-pin competitions on holes six and seventeen. Andy Cryer from Hebden Bridge won the sixth with a distance of 5’5” while Nick Carr won the seventeenth from Marsden Golf Club with a distance of 12’ 2”.

An Alliance Executive said, "The nearest-the-pin competitions have become very popular since they were introduced at Bradley Hall and is a feature that we are hoping to continue through future events." He added, "The Alliance would like to thank Meltham Golf Club for the excellent hospitality they offered and to all the competitors who supported the competition."

Home Victory for Hall Duo in Alliance

Halifax Bradley Hall members Terry Jackson and Kevin Barker claimed the Am-Am section of the latest Halifax, Huddersfield & District Golf Alliance meeting over their home course with an impressive 45 points earlier today.

The successful pairing came home two points ahead of long time leaders in the clubhouse Dave Stafford and Alan Dickinson from Todmorden. The Todmorden couple won a countback on the back-six from another home pair, P. Toon and M. Oldroyd to take the runners-up spot. In fourth place was N. Crowther and M. Atkinson from Outlane with 40 points.

A record 130 competitors participated in the event which saw excellent weather, particularly in the late morning and afternoon, bathing the players in warm sunshine for most of the day. The course held up very well to overnight rain and although some areas of the course remained wet, the competition went ahead on time and in good spirits. Participants commented about the greens saying they were excellent and running quicker than most in the area for this time of year.

With a sponsorship package agreed for the event prizes were given to the first four placings in both the Pro-Am and Am-Am. In the Professionals division, where tied scores are given joint placings, the winning pairings were Lee Shepherd and Rob Booth with their amateur partners Chris Nuttall and Steve Hopkinson respectively.

Nuttall made a nett birdie on the third to get the Willow Valley pair off to a good start which was built upon when Shepherd birdied the tough seventh and then the long eighth. Shepherd's eagle attempt on the par-five eighth just lipped out.

The winning pair then made a charge for home when Nuttall made nett birdies on 13,14 and 15 to take the duo to seven-under par. A dropped shot on the par-five 16th threatened their victory but two successive pars on the way home gave them a share of the spoils.

Nuttal told the Huddersfield Blog, "We thought we had blown any chance when making a mess of 16 to drop our first shots but managed to par in."

Tom Wild was third on his own with his amateur partner Gary Ward. For fourth position a card countback was used as six teams all finished on 39 points. With a back nine of 22, fourth spot went to the days sponsor Mr Dean Whitwam and his partner John Eyre of Woodsome Hall.

Pictured below are Eyre, Hopkinson, Whitwam and Bradley Hall Golf Club Vice Captain Nick Wheelwright. Wheelwright thanked the competitors for the excellent support of the Bradley Hall Alliance fixture and offered his appreciation to the Executive for staging the event at Bradley Hall, he said that he hoped he would be welcoming the Alliance back in the near future.

For the first time the event was sponsored by D.W.Developments. A photograph of the the Sponsors fourball by his sign on the first tee can be seen below. The people in order left to right are; Jim Baxter, Chris Hanson, Whitwam and Eyre.

With the sponsorship agreement there were also two nearest-the-pin competitions on the ninth and eighteenth holes. The first was won by Paul Newey from Ind Fixby with 4' 10" whilst the second was won by Mr. David Braithwaite from Marsden at 6' 6".

Alliance Assistant-Secretary James Washington said, "The Alliance would like to thank all the 130 competitors including our 16 professionals who played today and the Sponsor Dean Whitwam of D.W.Developments. The catering and hospitality was excellent from start to finish and both the indoor and outdoor staff ensured that the day was a complete success."

HHDUGC Union Review 2008

Senior HHDUGC Team Captain Chris Mear is currently planning his attack on the 2009 Yorkshire Inter-District Union campaign, however, yesterday evening gave opportunity to reflect on the highs and lows of last years team performance.

Addressing key officials at the Union AGM the former Captain of Meltham Golf Club filed his report on the 2008 season. He opened by advising that out of the 19 players representing the Union last term were four 'ever-presents'; Ben Crowther (Dewsbury District), Frank Greaves (West End), Andy Shaw (Bradley Hall) and Mathew Colcombe (Longley Park). Meanwhile four debutants were selected for the team; Ryan Greenwood (West End), Jared Ellison (Huddersfield), Jamie Bower (Meltham) and David Stafford (Todmorden). Mear also stated that Greaves won the Order of Merit, sponsored by Parnell Riley, with 38 points. The tenacious competitor was closely followed by Shaw four points back.

Mear then gave a brief re-cap on each match.

Match 1 - Bradford Union at Halifax Ogden Golf Club on the 18th May:
The foursomes were evenly contested, three wins came from Powell & Bridges, Fairhurst & McLean and Greaves & Greenwood.

However, the singles did not start well losing the top three matches which was going to prove to be synonymous for the rest of the season. A victory by Fairhurst & Crowther got the team back into the match but despite wins from Bridges, Greaves and Colcombe plus a battling halved match by Birkett it meant that for the second time in consecutive seasons the team lost to Bradford on the opening day of the season 17 –19 - Deja Vu!

Match 2 - Leeds Union at Howley Hall Golf Club on the 8th June:
The foursomes started well with top pairing Shaw & Fairhurst battling to a well deserved win by a score of 2&1. The away side then lost the next three matches but battling performances by Sweeney & Colcombe and Ellison & Stocchero ensured that Halifax, Huddersfield started the after lunch proceedings on level terms.

The afternoon matches started with all the top six singles going behind early on and, as most of you will know, the Howley Hall course does not let you gamble too much, so it was always going to be uphill from then on. However, Shaw managed to turn his match around winning 3&1, Greaves also managed to turn his match on it's head from four down to win by 1 hole, a further win by Stocchero and a halved match by Ellison left the final score 23 – 13 in Leeds' favour.

Match 3 - Teesside Union at Bradley Hall Golf Club on the 22nd June:
Although the rain kept off all day the conditions at Bradley Hall were far from conducive to good golf, a strong wind blew down the valley making playing conditions nearly impossible. The team again did well in the foursomes with wins for Powell & Shaw, Schofield & McLean, Appleyard & Colcombe and Stocchero & Ellison (pictured) leaving the HHDUGC team leading 8 – 4 at lunch.

The singles got underway and for once Halifax, Huddersfield got off to the flying start with the top three singles all having healthy leads after 10 holes. Shaw struggled to close out his game but a magnificent 2 iron to the last green ensured his win, and by that alone you will be able to gauge how wild the wind was - the 18th at Bradley Hall is only 158 yards long! At this stage approach shots were landing on greens and on some occasions actually stopping and then rolling upto twenty feet - you were either lucky or unlucky depending on where your approach shot landed. Further wins by Powell, Battye, Greaves, Scholefield, Ellison and Stocchero ensured a home victory by the margin of 22 – 14 and the first points of the season.

Match 4 - East Riding Union at Driffield Golf Club on the 13th July:
The East Riding team had a very rare appearance from their newly crowned English Amateur Strokeplay Champion, Steve Uzzell. He went on to get the home union off to a good start partnering Andy Lockwood and winning his foursomes match against Broadley & Powell. The HHDUGC sides only morning win came from Shaw & Fairhurst meaning that at the halfway stage the scores was 10 – 2 to east Riding.

Singles triumphs came from Powell, whilst consolation successues from the tail after the match was lost came from Crowther, Greaves, Scholefield, Colcombe and Appleyard.

Match 5 - York Union at Heworth Golf Club on the 3rd August:
Graham McLean pulled out of the team at the last minute which meant Mear had to find a replacement and 15-year-old Jamie Bower (pictured) of Meltham made his debut. At one stage the normally non-playing captain had to get his clubs out as Fraser Scholefield, despite several directional instructions, had still not arrived! Mear could see that Frank was not amused, however as Mear was making his way to the first tee Fraser screeched around the corner and into the car park, Mear quipped, "I don’t know who was most pleased... me or Frank!"

Foursomes wins by Stocchero & Ellison, Crowther & Bower and a half from Appleyard & Colcombe meant that Mear's men trailed by 7 – 5 at half time.

That gap was soon closed in the afternoon singles when Powell won the opening match with a 2 & 1 win. Further victories from Greaves, Appleyard, Crowther and debutant Bower left the team just short at the end by a margin of 21 - 15

Match 6 - Harrogate Union at Bradley Park Golf Club on the 17th August:
The course was barely playable after a long week of downpours plus heavy overnight rain. Both team captains inspected the course, and although Mear was not totally convinced that the course was playable, it was decided to go ahead as planned.

Again the HHDUGC started well with wins for Broadley & Shaw in the top match, with further wins in the next two matches - Bridges & Greenwood won by 1 hole and Greaves & McLean clinched their game on the last hole. Unfortunately these were the only foursomes winners leaving the score equal at 6 – 6.

Yet again our local team lost the top singles but then fine wins by Shaw, Greenwood, Bridges, and Greaves against four lost matches meant that Harrogate were 14 – 12 up mid-way through the contest. Good news came from young Bower who won 6&5 and with David Stafford also winning on his debut meant that the score was 18 – 16 in favour of the HHDUGC. in the closing stages. Crowther made a solid par up the last to seal the victory 20 - 16.

Match 7 - Sheffield Union at Meltham Golf Club on the 7th September:
Sheffield Union had already won the league and with wet weather all week over the county every IDU match was called off. Mear said, "This was probably our best result of the season - an 18 – 18 draw with the league champions!"

The league was won by the Sheffield with 13 points followed by the East Riding on 10 points and the Leeds on 9 points with the Halifax, Huddersfield and District team in 6th place on 5 points.

Mear also told the Union Executive, "I would like to thank all the clubs who hosted a Union match last season and the team looks forward to your continuing support for the coming season."

Following the end of the league season interest swiftly moved to the 35th Inter District Team Championship, to be held on home soil at Huddersfield Golf Club on the 14th September.

Mear said, "With home advantage I genuinely thought that we could be serious contenders. After the morning rounds were completed we were in second place on 451 strokes just behind a very strong Sheffield Union on 443. The high spot of our team performance was a 5-under par second round by Sam Bridges (pictured) which proved to be a new course record."

The team eventually finished on 896 in 4th place 24 shots behind Sheffield, the eventual winners. Mear added, "Disappointing was the fact that the last two players of both the Bradford Union and the Leeds Union produced very good scores which pushed our team into 4th place and not the second that we deserved."

Looking ahead to the coming campaign Mear warned, "The position that we find ourselves in at the moment is not ideal, we are not getting enough new blood into the team, our better players are all getting older together, but yet there are no juniors coming through and establishing themselves in the senior team to replace the older players. I feel that we need to coach the talented junior boys more intensively to try and stop this current shortfall in talent and make the transition from junior to senior team seamless. It is actually quite worrying and something the union needs to address if we are looking to compete at the higher level and not just make the numbers up."

Concluding his report Mear added, "I would like to take this opportunity to thank our team sponsors for last season, our players were again immaculately dressed in Stromberg trousers thanks to Rodney Taylor of Stromberg. Thanks to Danlett & Brewfit for supplying the team with golf balls, and thanks again to Parnell Riley for sponsoring the Order of Merit. Lastly but not least thanks to Mr President, Mr President Elect, Fred Ibberson, John Cocking, and Albert Guest our official team photographer and everybody else who supported the team. Also I would like to thank the Huddersfield Examiner, The Halifax Courier, and the Huddersfield Golf website for their continued coverage of the Union team."

Alliance Gain Sponsor for Bradley Hall Event

A further indication that the Huddersfield, Halifax & District Golf Alliance is going from strength to strength is the announcement this week that next Tuesday's meeting at Halifax Bradley Hall will carry a Sponsor.

D W Developments, a local Building and Joinery Contractor, have put their name to the event at the Holywell Green club. The Huddersfield based firm was established in 1996 after being set up by a self-employed Joiner straight from leaving school. They have worked on various housing projects for several local firms in the area.

The Sponsorship will beneficially impact the Alliance in a number of ways with the most significant change being an increase in the number of prize winners. There will be four prizes in both the Am-Am and Pro-Am plus there will be a nearest-the-pin prize as well on the day.

James Washington, organiser of the Alliance, told the Huddersfield Blog, "I believe it is a long time since an Alliance event was sponsored and just shows the increasing popularity of the event."

He added, "With the Sponsor in place we are proud to display 128 competitors for Tuesday which is a superb field. Even more impressive is the fact that the record for the number of professionals playing has been surpassed with a magnificent 17 down to play on Tuesday. The Alliance would like to thank all our representatives at each member club for ensuring that the number of competitors continues to increase. Thanks would also liked to placed with the Professionals who are also supporting the Alliance brilliantly."

Ladies Winter Alliance

As briefly reported last week two Outlane members captured the Huddersfield, Halifax & District Golf Association Ladies Winter Alliance at Dewsbury District Golf Club. We are now able to bring you more details about the event played on the 25th February.

The day started as slightly overcast, but mild, and progressed to a bright sunny afternoon with a field of 96 Ladies from 15 different clubs enjoying the Foursomes Stableford competition. The alternate-shot format helped keep the competitors moving well around the course and produced some excellent scores.

As is nearly always the case in these competitions, an early starter sets a good score and it remains there nearly all day until some late players come in and squeeze it out with a countback on the back nine. The script was seemingly written likewise again as a host club pairing of Lady President, Mrs C White and fellow member Mrs J Harpin were overtaken late on, by the eventual winners Mrs Ann Day and Mrs Barbara Daniel (pictured) with a very creditable 41pts.

That represents very good playing and scoring from this testing format where friendships are often tested to the limits out on the course! Trusting your partners is an essential element in foursomes and from the feedback on the day, it was very much enjoyed.

The prizes were well shared out around the different clubs that entered and it was overheard from some visitor’s that the testing terrain around the Dewsbury course was not at all as bad as they had been told and they had enjoyed the test it provided.

General Manager at The Pinnacle club told the Huddersfield Blog, "The Ladies commented on the good condition of the course, especially after the extreme weather conditions we have experienced recently. Dewsbury District always provides a good test and today was no exception."

Leading Scores;
1st: A. Day & B Daniel (Outlane G.C.) = 41 pts
2nd: C White & J Harpin (Dewsbury District G.C.) = 41 pts
3rd R Bottomley & S Horsfall (Crosland Heath G.C.) = 38 pts
4th P Middleton & E Wheelwright (Bradley Hall G.C.) = 37 pts
5th J Cox & M Smith (Hebden Bridge G.C.)= 37 pts
6th C Woodside & M Donaldson (Dewsbury & Huddersfield G.C's.) = 36 pts

Make a 'Rainbow' and Get a Free Golf Course!

The creator of the Rainbow Golf Course concept, which has taken the country by storm, is urging all golf clubs to create their own 'Rainbow'. The Huddersfield Golf Blog have spoken in depth with Todmorden member Roger Wornell about his intriguing idea that has gained national exposure.

A 'Rainbow' is a golf course created especially for playing Mixed golf, when ladies and men play together - both with and against each other, from a common set of tees. The course is called Rainbow because the colour motif for the tee markers is red, yellow and blue stripes, the colours usually used to separate courses.

Wornell, who came up with the genius idea believes that there is a need for it and told us, "The R&A golf rules clearly state that golf competitions should be played from the same set of tees. The most commonly used method of playing Mixed golf is for the Ladies to play from their card (usually the red tees) and the Men to play from their own tees (usually white or yellow). This is hardly sociable with the players separating at every hole." He added, "CONGU, in their brochure on Mixed golf, stresses that it must be realised that this kind of competition is effectively being held on two separate courses which is not in line with the ideal of the R&A rules of golf."

"CONGU also state that making Ladies play on the Men’s course is usually unfair because there is too large a difference to find a fair handicap allowance."

The Rainbow solution 'creates' a new course for a golf club from their existing golf tees – nine from the Ladies Red tees, and nine from the Men’s Yellow tees. Wornell explained, "The ideal could be to take the nine hardest from the Ladies card and the nine easiest from the Men’s card, thus taking the most common denominator."

However, the selection is entirely for the choice of the Club’s management, but clearly the tees must be suitable for both genders. Choosing the Index 1 from the Men’s card, or with the hole with the longest and hardest drive, is hardly likely to be in the interest of the competition.

The Management of the Rainbow course find (or initially estimate) the SSS for standard scratch Ladies, and also for the Men’s SSS, in order to calculate handicaps and the relevant allowance. In their document about Mixed golf, CONGU say that the difference usually required is at least around 4-6 strokes for courses from 5600 yards to 6100 yards.

There are several advantages of the Rainbow course. Golf goes back to the traditional basic rule of golf – the competition is held under a common set of tees. It is more sociably as intended – playing together throughout the course without having to separate after every green. Both players, Ladies & Men, play on at least nine holes on which they regularly play, and only have to adjust to nine different tees. It doesn’t alter or change any existing courses, competitions or structures. It needs no capital costs and zero additional running costs. A golf club can literally have a new course for free.

Wornell who has received feedback from players who have participated on the first ever rainbow course at Todmorden Golf Club said, "Both Ladies and Men like and enjoy playing together, and like playing on the new tees and holes, they are asking for playing these competitions more often."

He offered the following advice for any clubs looking to embrace the concept, "Make certain that any of the Men’s holes chosen are not beyond the average Ladies drive – i.e. not requiring 150 yards to clear any penal rough. Regarding handicapping, our experience suggests that you should take the higher of the CONGU guide lines – if in doubt, take the bigger increase for the Ladies handicap. Gentlemen will probably be disappointed! This is because the male players will not smash the card because they are playing on some 'ladies' holes! The majority of the Men will not beat the par from the nine ladies holes!"

Following the column penned by Bill Elliott in the February edition of Golf Monthly about the Rainbow Course and good coverage from the Golf Club Managers Association Wornell is hoping to 'sell' the general idea of the Rainbow Concept to all golf clubs. "If every club in the country creates a Rainbow I am not looking for any money, royalties or fees for me or the Club, as there is no copyright. I just think that it would be good for the game of golf if every club has its own Rainbow."
