Crum goes one better at Outlane

The dynamic Dewsbury duo of Adam Crum and Jimmy Main took top spot in the third Alliance fixture of the season at Outlane yesterday.

For Crum it was good reward for consistent play after finishing second at Crow Nest Park and fifth around his home course last time out.

In what was a high scoring and tight competition, Crum and Main (pictured above with HHDGA President Richard Badrock) scored an excellent 43 points. Their score, one of the later ones in, overtook long time clubhouse leaders Chris Holmes and Roy Johnson from Meltham. With both pairs scoring an excellent 43 points it was the superb 22 points on the backnine that led Crum and Main to victory, helped brilliantly by Crum’s brace of birdies and an eagle.

In the Pro-Am section home club professional Dave Chapman and Club Captain Peter Lawrence-Brown (pictured below) shared top spot with Richard Lambert and Raymond Owen from Crosland Heath. Both pairs scored an 43 points which included four birdies and an eagle from Dave. Not to be outdone the Crosland Heath pair had three birdies and eagle too!

The course was in good condition given the ongoing works being undertaken." He added, "We were fortunate to miss any inclement weather and once the sun broke through it was actually very pleasant. The service and hospitality was up to Outlane’s excellent standards with many compliments given on the meal offered afterwards. Overall, the day was an overwhelming success."

Hitchcock Lands Second Major

With nine ladies qualifying for the Ladies Championship but only eight taking part it was a small but select field that contested the last Ladies Major of the season at Crow Nest Park Golf Club.

In a very tight competition that saw only three shots separate fourth and second. On any other day Mandy Widdop's one over par 73 would have been good enough to seal victory. However Kathy Hitchcock posted a fabulous four under nett 68, one of the best rounds of the year.

This was not only Mrs Hitchcock's second win in this competition but also her second major of the season.

Results:
1st. Kathy Hitchcock = nett 68
2nd. Mandy Widdop = nett 73
3rd. Barbara Horrocks = nett 75
4th. Carole Hampson = nett 76

Aaron Schnacke (pictured below with HHDUGC President Phil Walton) became the third player from Huddersfield Golf Club to win the Union's premier event since the turn of the millennium when he defeated Meltham's Jamie Bower 2&1 in the 36-hole final.

Schnacke follows in the footsteps of Richard Oddy, winner in 2000, and current club-mate Richard Broadley who triumphed in 2004, 2007 and 2008. It is also 12 years on since 1996 English Open Amateur Stroke Play champion Peter Fenton claimed the title when he took over from another former Huddersfield member, Dean Stokes.

All square at lunch the tie was always set for a close finish, despite Bower holding home advantage, and the contest eventually ended on the 35th hole with Schnacke holding an unassailable advantage. The competition, in memory of John R Crawshaw is sponsored by B M Howarth Halifax.

In the Junior event, sponsored by Cartridge World of Halifax, Hebden Bridge's Adam Cryer (pictured below) fought back from three-down at the halfway stage to win by the same 2&1 margin over Junior Order of Merit winner, Ben Adamson from Crow Nest Park.

Double Victory for the Jenkinsons

Granville and Bryn Jenkinson (grandfather and grandson ) completed a unique double when they won the Lockwood Victory Cups with a magnificent 61 nett score after a Graham Cups success earlier in the season with a 61 nett score!

Whilst the latter competition was a greensome, last Saturday's was a better ball off 3/4 handicap and the ravine at the fourth hole nearly caused their downfall when grandfather Granville (he had the shot) only just cleared the hazard and luckily the search for the ball was a success. Although it proved to be a horrible lie he hacked it out to finish an amazing 12 inches from the hole to the relief of Bryn who was also in trouble.

From then on both of them clicked to keep the momentum going to win by one shot and complete the double success of pairs golf to win two of Outlane's prestigious trophies.

Results:
Granville Jenkinson / Bryn Jenkinson = 61 nett
Terry Gorman / Neil Smith = 62 nett
Neil Hughes / Kevin Pendlebury = 63 nett

Crow Nest Finals Day

The 'Grand Finale' at Crow Nest Park was played-out at the weekend in the form of their Finals Days which was held in glorious weather.

Ben Adamson won the Holmes Trophy (Junior Knockout) with a stunning performance which included six gross birdies in 16 holes as he beat the Captains Son, Tom Broadbent, by the margin of 3 & 2.

Meanwhile Head Greenkeeper, Rob Gee, continued his fine form of late by winning the Singles Knockout by the margin of 3 & 2 over Adam Wadsworth.
Although Rob stated that he played well he claimed that Adam had performed equally well in his first final, but the difference had been only down to the putting.
Gee made it a seasons Major double having won the Scratch Championship last week.

In the Pairs Knockout final Club Captain & his Vice Captain, Martin Broadbent & Glynn Owen, took the honours over-powering Mark Widdop & Craig Helliwell by a margin of just 1 hole as the match went into extra holes and was decided on the 19th green with Owen securing the victory with a par.

Not being left out of the proceedings the Ladies Singles knockout final, also went the distance and more with the match between former Lady Captains Ann Stafford and Mandy Widdop going to extra holes.
Stafford won the match on the 19th green and celebrated with a drink in the 19th hole afterwards where a crowd of over 50 enjoyed the barbecue and presentation which took place after the matches.

The Rabbits knockout final was won by Ian Clarke who defeated defending champion John Farrar in the Rabbits showcase final by a margin of 5 & 4.
The Rabbit Shield was won by Steve McDermott and the Handicap skins event was won by Nick Day.

Halifax Juniors Take Junior League Title

After a long hard season the Halifax Junior Team collected the HHDUGC league title after an 11 year wait at the weekend.

The Ogden club beat last years winners, Willow Valley, 6-2 in the 18-hole matchplay event at Huddersfield Golf Club.

The First match out was Tom Calvert (WV) against Jamie Smith (Hx), both now regulars in the Junior Union Team, therefore both knew each others game. The game started in favour of Willow Valley with a par on the first by Tom to go 1-up. The game swung back to in Halifax's favour with a couple of birdies by Jamie in the next few holes.

A solid par on the par 3 eighth and a nett birdie on the 9th gave Jamie a three hole advantage after the first nine holes. Solid golf on the next few holes gave the Halifax youngster a lead that could not be beaten as he won the first match 6 & 4.

The second match out was Tom Brancker (WV) against Nick Bennett (Hx). This game was evenly matched over the first couple of holes until Nick started to pick up the wins and soon gained a 4-up lead going into the back nine. A solid start to the back nine gave Halifax another win, this time 6 & 5.

The third game out saw Alistair Butters (WV) against Adam Curry (Hx), a game that was closer than all the others, and was to decide the eventual outcome of the final. After exchanging the lead a couple of times early on in the match it was Curry who held a one hole advantage at the half way point.

The 4th match out was Tom Pinder (WV) against Liam Dean (Hx) and from the first tee the difference in lengths of drives, in favour of Tom, was going to be a major factor in the result of this game. Liam stood in for the missing Halifax regular, Oliver Davidson, who was on Rugby duties with his school.

Liam never gave in and exchanged wins on a few holes but the superior length off the tee for Tom eventually put points on the board for Willow Valley winning 6 & 5.

Meanwhile match three, which was going to settle this epic final, saw Curry taking a two hole advantage standing on the 14th tee. Curry drove off first hitting the left side with Butters hitting the right semi where after a short search his ball was found and struck further down the par 5 fairway and the same for Curry. Both players pitched onto the green and advantage went to Curry knocking it in closer than Butters who then came up just short with his birdie attempt unlike Curry who calmly rolled it in for a birdie and a three hole advantage with just four to play.

A wayward drive from Curry on the 15th lost him the hole and reduced the lead to 2up with three to play. Both players hit long drives down the 16th fairway leaving only short iron shots into the green. Both shots came up short on the front of the green but with Curry having a shot on his partner the advantage was back with Halifax.

Curry putted up just short and Butters knowing only birdie would do came up just short too and gracefully conceded the hole to Curry to give Adam a 3-up with two to play victory and the Junior league title to the Halifax Juniors.

Halifax Golf Club Captain Gene Gerrard and past Captain David Lightfoot, who followed all the games, were delighted with all the Juniors who played in the final at Fixby giving a big credit to the Willow Valley juniors on their attitude and behaviour on and off the course.

Halifax Golf Club Junior Organiser Darren Davison was full of praise for all his Juniors for all their hard work this season and to Steve Smith who has helped so much with the Junior section. Darren also gave a big thanks to Sponsors David Lightfoot, Nev Pollard and Lee Shaw for raising funds to coach these juniors and the hard work has paid off.

Halifax are now trying to emulate the standard set last year by Willow Valley who, after qualifying from the next regional finals stage, went onto the National finals which they won with a fantastic team effort and saw them represent England in the Home Nations Final in La Manga golf resort in Spain. Willow Valley Junior organiser gave the Halifax team his best wishes in the next round.

Matchplay Finalists Decided

The 2009 finalists of the Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union of Golf Clubs Individual Matchplay Championship were decided at Fixby on Saturday.

An action-packed day of golf resulted in Huddersfield member Aaron Schnacke and Meltham player Jamie Bower reaching the final of the Union's premier event.

With home advantage Schnacke initially saw off number one seed and P.S. Cockroft champion, Mark Hepworth from Dewsbury, by a margin of 4&2. He then went on to spring the shock of the day when he disposed of Union regular Sam Bridges (West End) 2&1. Incidentally that was the margin that Bridges had defeated club-mate Ian Marsland in the morning quarter-final.

In the bottom half of the draw Bower denied defending champion and pre-tournament favourite, Richard Broadley, the chance to win three titles in a row (and a fourth in total) with a confident display that resulted in a 3&2 win.

Bower then clinched a place in the final with a dramatic extra time win over Todmorden's David Stafford. Level after regulation play the pair halved the first hole of sudden-death before the Yorkshire Boys player took the contest at the 20th hole. It was tough on Stafford who had earlier battled through against Toby Garrett by 3&2.

Bower will be hoping he can go one better than the last two Meltham members to reach the 36-hole final - Graham McLean went down to Ben Crowther in 2005 whilst Garrett lost out to Andrew Whitworth the following year. Whilst fellow youngster Schnacke will be aiming to keep the prestigious winners shield at Fixby Hall following Broadley's recent dominance.

Meltham Foursomes Double Triumph

Meltham Golf Club were celebrating a double success when the club won both the scratch and junior HHDUGC foursomes titles yesterday at a glorious Woodsome Hall.

Union Team Manager Chris Mear joined forces with Jason Moore to lead the scratch side to success over a resilient Ryburn represented by former Meltham man Chris Rudd and Craig Hare.

Leading by four holes at lunch Meltham were able to maintain their advantage and eventually closed the match out 5&4 in the 36-hole final.

In the junior section Jamie Bower and Luke Edmonds also enjoyed a lunchtime lead, they were six up at the halfway stage, and came out 6&4 victors over the West End duo of Nathan Raynor and Brad Hardcastle. For Bower it capped a great weekend after the Yorkshire Boys player had progressed to the final of the Union Matchplay Championship the day before at Fixby.

The Handicap foursomes final saw Castlefields romp to a 9&8 win against Woodsome Hall. Darren Jennings (12 hcp) and Matthew Rioch (10hcp) raced to a four-up lead after 18-holes and never looked back as they finished the contest off with time to spare against Lee Snaith and Phil Sawyer from Woodsome Hall.

Magnificent Win Denies Leaders Yorkshire Title

A magnificent win for the Halifax Huddersfield Union against Yorkshire IDU League leaders Sheffield at Chesterfield on Sunday denied the South Yorkshire side a defence of the title they won so convincingly last year.

The HHDUGC rounded off their season in fine style with one of the best performances for many a year as they came from 8-4 down at lunch to record a memorable victory.

With Manager Chris Mear away on holiday team affairs were handled by West End's Frank Greaves (pictured above on the right) and he led from the front with two brilliant displays. His enthusiasm certainly spread throughout the team which included many young players that he currently or has managed at junior level.

Greaves & Brad Tupman and Adam Cryer & Matthew Colcombe scored impressive wins in the foursomes but defeats in the other four ties meant that a fourth defeat of the season looked on the cards for the Union's elite.

However, a stirring performance in the afternoon with a never say die attitude brought victories for; Greaves, Iain Powell, Andy Shaw, debutant Ben Adamson, Cryer and Andy Wilford. Vital halved matches for Tupman, Jamie Bower and Tom Goodair ensured a remarkable turnaround and a 19-17 triumph.

Union official and former President, Albert Guest from Woodsome Hall, commented, "This sets the format and perhaps the team for the 2010 season. It was really good to see the team members out on the course supporting the others after their matches had ended."

The defeat for Sheffield allowed East Riding to sneak in and win the league following their home win against Bradford who were also in with a shout of the title had they sprung a shock at Ganstead Park. Despite the victory the HHDUGC side dropped to seventh place as York and Leeds both won. See the final Yorkshire IDU League Table.

Bradley Hall Rabbits Open

The Halifax Bradley Hall Extended Rabbits Open took place on Sunday 6th September.

The first few starters had to contend with a few clouds but thankfully no rain and little or none of the infamous ‘Bradley Hall wind’! Putting however was a major factor with some interesting pin positions and excellent fast greens despite the previous week’s adverse weather.

Despite the current economical situation the committee still attracted substantial sponsorship for this year’s event which resulted in the club being able to offer a large array of high value prizes totalling £750 which included prizes for the best five stableford scores and spot prizes for the ‘nearest the pin’ on the four par 3’s, ‘nearest the line’ on the 13th hole and ‘longest drive’ on the 15th. hole.

The event, accepting handicaps of 10 and upwards, again was a complete success largely due to a very strong Rabbit Committee who worked extremely hard on the day with special thanks going to the Open Sub Committee, Mick Moss, Adrian Arthur and Eiddon Roberts for the their effort in setting up this important event. The hard work paid off with entries from 88 pairs taken well before the day for the event. Thanks should also go to head green keeper Allan Court and his green staff who with the yellow tees set well back and a few ‘interesting’ pin positions set a challenging course for members and visitors alike.

Special thanks also go to all the sponsors but particularly to the main sponsors Raygrade and Reactivmedia and to Howard Brook and Martin Uttley who took first place in the Sponsors Cup, a competition which was introduced in 2007 exclusive to players representing sponsors companies.

The participants were able to have substantial Refreshments at the half way hut which was again provided by the ladies section who also raised around £200 for their funds.

Once again the leading participants results could be viewed throughout the day on the big screen in the clubhouse thanks to an innovative computer programme which updated all the results immediately on the leaderboard after their cards had been submitted, many thanks went to Mike Arden for the manning the system throughout the day.

The evening presentation took place once all the scores were in and what was also pleasing to Rabbit Captain Allan Teale was that most of the prize winners were present. First place eventually went to Owen Hall and Andy Hanson of Bradley Hall on 46 Stableford points just in front of Nigel Gittings (Bradley Hall) and Stuart King (Wetherby) with 44 points. Third place was taken by Geoff Parkinson (Bradley Hall) and Wes Walker (Ogden) with 43 points.

Results:
1st: Owen Hall and Andy Hanson = 46 points
2nd: Nigel Gittings and Stuart King = 44 points
3rd: Geoff Parkinson and Wes Walker = 43 points
4th: Toby Wood and Tony Anderson = 42 points
5th: Paul Hessleden and Mike Oldroyde = 42 points

Nearest the Pin Hole 2: Simon King (Wetherby)
Nearest the Pin Hole 4: Raymond Roebuck (Bradley Hall)
Nearest the Pin Hole 9: Damien Greenwood (Blackley)
Nearest the Pin Hole 18: Phil Cawkwell (Queensbury)
Nearest the Line Hole 13: Dave Rhodes (Bradley Hall)
Longest Drive Hole 15: Mark Flude (Queensbury)

The event was completed with an evening meal for the Sponsors, Rabbit Committee members and Guests.

The Rabbits Open is the main fund raising function for the rabbit section and without it we would not be able to carry out the good work for the club and the rabbit members. Teale personally thanked the committee members who ensured the day ran smoothly. He said, "It is this sort of dedication that makes the Bradley Hall Rabbits Extended open one of the most successful and popular competitions in the district."

Play-off Agony for Shepherd

ALEX Belt tied up the PGA North Region Assistants’ Tournament for the Harold Lees Trophy when he beat Lee Shepherd at the fifth extra hole at Dore and Totley.

The 23-year-old from Bridlington Links won an enthralling battle with the Willow Valley man who went agonisingly close to settling the issue at the third play-off hole, the 18th.

Belt saved his par thanks to a delicately executed chip to a foot after overshooting the green and was then relieved to see Shepherd’s 10-foot putt scrape the edge of the hole.

The pair were deadlocked in normal time on level par total of 144 over two rounds but Belt, who defends his PGA North Region Championship crown at Marriott Hollins Hall at the end of the month, looked home and dry half-way through his second round after grabbing four birdies.

But he dropped three shots at the 10th and despite leaked two more at the 12th and 16th he still looked a likely winner until Shepherd birdied the 17th.

And it was at the same hole in sudden death where Belt, winner of the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship at Bull Bay earlier in the season, made sure of the title with a par after his opponent paid the penalty for a blocked drive.

Daniel Haughian, assistant at Adlington Golf Centre and overnight leader by three shots after a 68, ran up a 10 on the par five ninth and double bogeyed the next on his way to a 79 and a share of sixth place, three off the pace.

LEADING SCORES: 144 Alex Belt (Bridlington Links) 71 73, Lee Shepherd (Willow Valley) 73 71; 145 Michael Ramsden (Bondhay) 73 72, Matthew Marsh (Hallowes) 71 74, James Salt (Ashton-under-Lyne) 71 74; 147 Luke Allen (Lindrick) 77 70, Ben Scott (Clitheroe) 71 76, Daniel Haughian (Adlington Golf Centre) 68 79.

Finals Day at Outlane

The six Outlane 'Major' finals were played in perfect conditions at the weekend which saw some entertaining and exciting golf.

Whilst three of the finals were completed well before the 36 holes the other three were close affairs and one of them, the Angora Trophy, kept everybody waiting for their buffet when the finalists had to play extra holes to determine the winner.

Snooker player Robert Armitage got the break he wanted when Stuart Chaplin just missed the green on the 37th hole and failed to match his opponents par to lose a very entertaining see-saw battle after coming from two down at the halfway stage and then putting his opening shot on the motorway to go three down at the 19th hole. He then battled back to level it up at the 36th hole but it was talented snooker player Robert who pocketed the trophy .

The Junior final saw last years losing finalist, Bryn Jenkinson, getting the better of the promising Mark Saville who played his part in the closing holes to keep Bryn on his toes where a superb tee shot on the short 16th won him the Stan Sykes Cup with a solid par that Mark could not match.

The Marchant Cup also went to the 34th hole and it was Tim Brook who succeeded against Peter Hey who did well to come from four down after 18 holes but was always playing catch up and couldn't continue his run after getting to just two behind with four to play.

Rabbit Captain Alan Henderson found Simon McKenzie in fine form and his four up at the halfway stage was extended to ten up with eight to play which ended the match.

The Day Bowls final which is a Foursome event saw Gordon Drysdale and Dale Brook having to play off a maximum of 20 handicap (they normally play off 24) and their halfway score of five down to Steve Beeby and Ted Cooper looked as if it was going to be an early finish but the former took the winners to the 29th hole before conceding.

The Sudworth Cup produced the best golf of the day and whilst it finished on the 30th hole Steve Howlett must have wondered what he had to do to win because Jarrad Hazelden was round in 67 gross and whilst Steve was three down after 18 holes the birdie bombardment continued in the afternoon. Steve played his part with regulation pars only to find Jarrad matching and even bettering then to win a superb match 7 and 6 on the 30th hole. The card showed the winner having only one bogey in the whole of the match.

Crow Nest Pair Home in on Alliance Victory

The Halifax, Huddersfield & District Winter Golf Alliance certainly lived up to its name yesterday when the late-summer opener at Crow Nest Park greeted golfers with wintry conditions.

However, that didn't deter Crow Nest members Michael Scott and Mark Campbell (pictured above with President Richard Badrock & Crow Nest Captain Martin Broadbent) as they used all their home knowledge to tame a difficult Crow Nest Park golf course yesterday. Their score of 39 points proved unbeatable in weather that included persistent high winds and blustery showers.

Scoring on all of the first seven holes Scott made an impressive start. It was then the turn of Campbell to bolster up the score over the middle stretch before both contributed on the final holes. Had it not been for some unlucky chips and putts the score could have been even better.

Dewsbury pair Adam Crum and Robert Speight finished in second place a point back whilst Bradley Park's T Williams and K Waddington took third on the same mark but with a poorer back-nine.

In the Pro-Am section Rob Booth and his partner Andy Hare (pictured) playing off four from Bradley Hall scored a very impressive 41 points which included five birdies on their card. Their score proved unbeatable in what was a tight contest in the very well supported Pro-Am section. In second place were Richard Lambert and Paulo Crepaldi from Crosland Heath with 39 Points.

The Alliance's James Washington said, "The Alliance would like to thank Dean Wilson, Paul Everitt and Les Holmes for their tremendous help and efforts in helping to organise the day and to all the competitors that took part." He added, "It was a credit to the quality of the course at Crow Nest that the event went ahead. Apart from the weather, the day was a tremendous success and is an excellent platform for the rest of the Alliance season."

The presentation was conducted by Mr. Barry Isles, new Alliance President Mr. Richard Badrock who was ably assisted by Crow Nest Captain Mr. Martin Broadbent.

The next event is at Dewsbury on Thursday 17th September.

Henry & Son Claim Crow Nest Cup

Over the weekend of the 29th & 30th August a record number of 65 members competed in the Club Championship at Crow Nest Park Golf Club for the Crow Nest Cup.

Members qualify over the preceding 12 months in order to play in this 'Major' competition which is played over two days and 36 holes on a medal basis.

Last Saturday, the first day of the competition, saw awful weather in the form of high blustery winds and occasional heavy showers. Many members claimed that the conditions were the toughest they had ever known at the Hove Edge course.
However, Mark Campbell defied the conditions and shot a level gross 70 for a jaw dropping nett 62 to lead by five shots overnight. The cut coming at +7 which was the highest mark in the history of this competition.

The Sunday dawned with relatively calm conditions and the weather almost balmy at 18 degrees. As Campbell moved backwards during the second round, out of the pack came Martin Henry, who had his son Scott on his bag as caddy for both days - both pictured above with The Crow Nest Cup. Having played the opening nine holes in level par he manged to maintained his lead right to the last where he had the luxury of winning despite a four putt on the final green!

In second place was Steve Smith a stroke back with Richard Crossley coming third.

Results:
Winner: Martin Henry ( - 4 )
Runner up: Steve Smith ( - 3 )
3rd: Richard Crossley ( - 2 )

Level Par Ryan Fires Best Gross

The Junior Pinnacle Open was held last week in glorious sunshine at Dewsbury District Golf Club.

Young golfers from Huddersfield, Lightcliffe, Willow Valley, Bradley Park, Bradley Hall, Oulton Hall, Waterton Park and Lee Park in Liverpool joined host club members to make up a field of almost 50 players, one of the largest fields for a Junior Open in this area.

The main Winner was Lee Park's Tom Fearon who has promised the club to come back and defend the trophy next year. Fearon won on a card countback from home player George Sykes after both had recorded rounds of 65.

Meanwhile the best gross score went to four-handicapper, Ryan Joyce (pictured with club captain Phil Smith), from Huddersfield Golf Club who posted a level par round of 71.

Club manager Mick Thorpe said, "The sunshine and great condition of the course helped make it an enjoyable day for competitors and spectators alike."

Results:
1st: Tom Fearon, Lee Park G.C - 85 = 65 nett
2nd: George Sykes, Dewsbury District G.C - 97 = 65 nett
Best Gross: Ryan Joyce, Huddersfield G.C - 71

Bower Impresses Against International Field

Meltham's Jamie Bower put in a strong performance when finishing in a share of fourth place during the North of England Under 16's Championship at Heswall Golf Club last week.

The well run EGU organised event at the Wirral course, presented in superb condition for the fourth year running, attracted a strong field with a number of players competing from Spain and Germany.

In the four round tournament Bower trailed the leader by eight shots at the halfway stage following rounds of 79 and 75 but made the cut enabling him to play the final two rounds.

The course was set up long from the blue championship tees and measured 6,882 yards. Strong winds and periods of heavy rain greeted the players on each of the first two days.

On Friday the wind strength increased and again there were heavy showers. However, that didn't deter Bower who carded back-to-back rounds of 76 to close the gap on the winner to just five strokes.

The eventual champion of the boys event Olly Carr, a member at Heswall, finished on a total of 301, three strokes ahead of the runner-up Matthew Fitzpatrick from Hallamshire, with third place going to Harry Casey of Enfield. Six players including Bower finished on the 306 mark.

The difficulty of scoring could be seen by the CSS for the four rounds; 76,74,75,76.

Meanwhile Bronte Law from Bramhall took the under 16's and under 14's prize for the best girl with a magnificent 297 total.

Alliance Set For Crow Nest Opener

The 2009/10 Halifax, Huddersfield & District Golf Club Alliance will start on Thursday at Crow Nest Park.

In an event that was cancelled last year due to a lack of support Alliance chiefs are delighted with a turnout that includes seven professionals in the season opener.

There are still some last minute places available at the Hove Edge course which has recently been praised for it's condition. Treasurer James Washington said, "For the Crow Nest Park meeting to be going ahead is a real improvement, especially as a lot of golfers are still involved with club competitions."

He added, "I would like to reiterate that all prize winners are expected to attend the presentation with prizes forfeited for non attendance. Any competitor entered who doesn't show will also be expected to pay their entry fee with failure to do so resulting in the player being suspended until the fee is received."

The Crow Nest Park event doesn't require jacket and tie afterwards but a change from golfing attire is preferred.

Full start sheet.

Record Breaking Phil Wins at Teesside

The Teesside Trophy was played on Sunday in very blustery conditions with heavy showers during the last two hours.

However that did not deter the winner, Phil Ridden, who broke the aggregate tournament record of 134 by one shot and equalled the course record with a 64 in his second round. Both these records had been held since 1998 by Grahame Storm.

City of Newcastle's Ridden trailed by two at the halfway stage following a round of 69 and then went on a birdie spree in the afternoon as he carded his 64. That left first round leader and fellow club-mate, S. Lee, six shots back in second place after he tagged a 72 to his opening 67.

Yorkshire Champion Nigel Sweet extended his lead in the order of merit race with rounds of 69 and 73 for third spot. 2008 Yorkshire Champion, Richard Law, kept the pressure on with back-to-back rounds of 73 for eight place.

Meanwhile Wheatley's Steve Brennan, third in the table, collected some points with rounds of 73 and 75 and with double points on offer in the season finale at Moortown on the 20th September is still in with a shout of defending his title.

Tournament organiser Mick Fleming said, "Congratulations to Paul on a fine two rounds of golf. We would like to thank all those who entered the competition and look forward to next years competition."

Halifax Coast to Handicap Victory

Halifax Golf Club cruised to victory over their own Ogden course at the weekend as they lifted the Jack Sykes Trophy whilst winning the HHDUGC Handicap Team Championship.

They powered to a mammoth 19 stroke victory with Outlane coming home a distant second and Saddleworth third, a further six shots back, as most of the teams were blown off course on a windy day at the exposed moorland course.

The four man team of Andy Anderson, Mark Greenway, Simon Willis and Tony Speight produced a consistent gross score of 334, the only to club with all players breaking 90. Anderson's 81 was the best of the although it was matched by Willow Valley's Nick Hartley and Martyn Atkinson from Outlane. Hartley, a 12-handicapper, collected the best nett prize with his 69 on a day when the CSS rose by three to 72 and the event was deemed a reduction-only for handicap purposes.
Three teams; Marsden, Hanging Heaton and Willow Valley, were disqualified for playing from the wrong tee-markers on the par three seventh.
