The Cresta Trophy for the Outlane juniors has got underway with the format of a unique version of matchplay between themselves. It is played during any school holidays and with 3 points available during each game an exciting final batch of matches can lead to the winner.
The matchplay format consists of 1 point for the first 9 holes and also 1 point for the second 9 holes and then 1 point for whoever wins the match. You can get 3 points in total but last year saw a number of matches with a 2-1 score and Mark Saville (sixth from the left in photo) clinching an exciting final halved match to take the Cresta Trophy with 28 points, winning by just one point.
The format gives juniors experience in matchplay they would not normally get if they are knocked out early in club competitions and they can still participate even after a loss.
