Woodruff Cup Results

The competition for the Woodruff Cup was played at Bradley Hall on Saturday 8th May with a field of 155 golfers. The maximum handicap allowance for the event is 15 and primarily for the 'tiger' golfers.

A moderate wind blowing form the north east together with cold temperatures resulted in only three players beating the par score of 70 and the C.S.S. of 72 was ample evidence that most struggled to build a decent card.

However, at 7am, the very first competitor, Dean Alexis (8), provided a challenging target with his nett return of 68 which stood until late afternoon when Neil Crowther (6), returned the winning score of 65. He also had the lowest gross score of 71, despite dropping three shots on the last three holes.

The third sub par round was a 68 by Clive McFadzean (4) who was the very last player in the field.

Once more, junior captain Andy Hare put together a good round of 70 alongside Andy Whitfield and the evergreen Steve Wilkinson.

A round of note was also provided by Paul Hesselden (11) whose lost ball (subsequently found but outside the five minutes allowed) on the first hole for a score of 8 but still managing to reduce his handicap to 10.

Leading scores:
N.Crowther 71 - 6 = 65
D.Alexis 76 - 8 = 68
C.McFadzean 72 - 4 = 68
A.P.C.Hare 73 - 3 = 70
A.Whitfield 79 - 9 = 70
A.Pearson 81 - 10 = 71
P.Hesselden 82 - 11 = 71
M.Appleyard 76 - 5 = 71
N.Stevens 82 - 11 = 71
A.Pilgrim 82 - 11 = 71

  1. That was tough luck for Paul on his 1st tee shot, losing his ball in a water hazard on the wrong fairway! Paul has set himself some tough targets to reach this year, lets hope he keeps up the good golf on the right fairway!
