Sunshine on Ladies Open at Elland

Thursday June 3rd began with beautiful sunshine and very little breeze, which remained throughout the day – perfect for golf!

The Ladies Open Am/Am at Elland was a very popular event this year with twenty one 4 Lady teams taking part.

The format was Stableford, best two scores to count off ¾ handicap. Prizes up for grabs were, Team Place; Winner, Second and Third, Nearest the Line on the 5th and Nearest the Pin on the 18th.

The team in first place were Janet Evans (Elland), Jenny Hill (Harrogate), Di Illingworth (Davenport), and Linda Lomax (Davenport), coming in with a score of 79 points. Janet said her team members had not played at Elland before and thoroughly enjoyed the day, Janet found the course to be in an “immaculate” condition. The ladies all scored birdies on the par 5 holes which helped the final score and despite not actually scoring well team-wise on the 18th, Linda did win the prize for nearest the pin.

Second place went to Mary Mellor and Annie Green (Elland), L Jamieson and M Chatfield (West End) with 77 points. Third place was secured by Bev Taylor and Olwyn Hornby (Elland), Sheila Harrison and Olwen Mercer (Bradley Park) with 76 points.

Nearest Line: Jen Dawson (West End)
Nearest Pin: Linda Lomax (Davenport)

The event was organised by Lady Captain, Carole Wood who was well supported by club members in a variety of roles. ‘Mr Starters’ were Peter Gul, David Nicholson (Captain) and Jack Godridge, ‘Spotters’ on the 2nd were Michael Kenny, Peter Gul, Barry Littlewood, Gerald Walker and Keith Leeming. The Ladies lounge was converted for the day and doubled as Reception and Half-way House, here to offer a helping hand were Margaret Walker, Christine Sunderland, Kath Godridge, Gloria Aspinall, Linda Gul, Julia Stanger, Annie Green, Carmen Leonard and Sally Thompson.
