The threatening clouds and a cold westerly wind blowing down the course was a distinct change from the recent spell of glorious sunshine and high temperatures.
This however did not detract from some excellent scores being returned with no less than 49 pairs out of the field of 192 bettering the standard scratch score of 70.
Starting first at 7am was the pairing of former Bradley Hall members, now based at the Huddersfield club, Richard Broadley (+2) and Andrew Shaw (scratch). Although Richard was suffering badly from an upset stomach, he managed to complete the round, albeit in considerable pain and each featured nine times on their card, returning a nett score of 61 even with a gross 4, nett 5 on the stroke eighteen 12th hole! In total Andy recorded 3 gross birdies and Richard 5 plus 1 eagle.
Needless to say their remarkable round could not be bettered but coming close, both with nett 63's, were Bradley Hall members, Neil Crowther (6) and Rod Goldstein (16) and father and son pairing Michael Appleyard (6) and Andrew (5).
The week continues with the Mixed Betterball on Sunday 1 August, the Seniors Open on Tuesday 3rd, the Junior Open on Wednesday 4th, the Ladies Open on Thursday 5th and completing the week, the men's individual 'Lord Mexbrough Cup' over 36 holes.
