Saturday 7th August saw the culmination of the 78th 'Open Week' at Bradley Hall Golf Club with the staging of the 36 hole 'Lord Mexborough Cup'.
Ninety three golfers from 11 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland took part in the event which was played under heavy clouds with frequent rain showers throughout the day. But this did not detract from the excellent course condition provided by head greenkeeper, Alan Court and his staff. Numerous compliments were received, in particular regarding the condition of the putting surfaces, which are surely comparable to any in the county.
The first round opened at 7am with the Huddersfield duo of Andy Shaw and Richard Broadley alongside home player, Andy Appleyard and it was expected that at least one of the trio would set a challenging target but this proved not to be the case and it was left to home player, Paul Buckley (8) with his nett score of 66 to head the pack.
This was matched by another home member and winner of the event in 2008, Mark Bailey (8), to equal the score but with an inferior back nine score which left him in second place.
By the end of the first round, the two were closely followed by home players Mick Shea (7), Josh Bailes (6) Andy Hare (3) and David Arrowsmith (7) of Todmorden and leaving them very much as favourites to take the title.
In the afternoons second round, Chris Doyle (7) also returned a nett 66 but his 75 in the morning virtually ruled him out of the competition as did poor returns from the early leaders, Paul Buckley (nett 74), Mark Bailey (nett 78), Mick Shea (net t79), Josh Bailes (nett 75), Andy Hare (nett 73) and David Arrowsmith (nett 73).
This then opened the door for other competitors and Dean Alexis (7) posted a 69 to go with his mornings 70 and to move into the overall lead but was soon overtaken by Paul Taylor (3) with a 67 and a 36 hole score of 138 which proved impossible to beat and to be the only two scores under the course par of 70.
This was the third time that the event has been won by Paul Taylor, a member of Bradley Hall for many years since joining in the dim and distant past as a junior, a fact that was not forgotten in his acceptance speech.
Receiving the prize as runner up was Dean Alexis who this season has been very much a 'nearly' man with a number of close challenges in various competitions.
The prize for the best gross score over 36 holes was achieved by David Stafford (1), one of only four representatives from near neighbours, West End with his gross score of 144.
Prizes were also awarded to the best nett scores in the first round, Paul Buckley (66), the second round, Chris Doyle (66) and the best gross scores by Andy Whitworth (71) in the morning and Andy Shaw (72) in the afternoon.
A vote of thanks on behalf of the competitors throughout the weeks events was given by the captain of Halifax Golf Club, David Peel, a former member and greens chairman of Bradley Hall and a regular and always welcome visitor to his former Club.
