Battye impresses in Yorkshire events

Edward Battye capped a successful season on the Yorkshire Order of Merit with a tied-third place finish in the season-finale at Moortown Golf Club last Sunday.

The Dewsbury players 147 total over the famous Leeds course, on a day when CSS soared to five over par in the morning, left him just four strokes behind Fulford's plus-3 man, Jamie Miller, who won by three from Scott Hartley (+1). With double points on offer Battye (Scr) tied with Dan Wasteney but lost out on a countback for overall third spot, however, points are split equally in the order of merit for tied finishes and the 280 gained helped lift Battye into fourth place in the final order of merit table.

Battye has only played in eight of the 18 qualifying events this year and whilst he disappointed in the Amateur Championship at Fulford his other performances have been impressive. A fourth place at Hornsea earlier in the year was followed by sixth spot at Bingley St. Ives in July.

He found even better form later that month with a runners-up finish at Cobble Hall, missing out by just one stroke, and was again narrowly denied his first title when Roger Roper birdied the final hole to seal a one-stroke victory over Battye at Woodsome Hall in the Earl of Dartmouth Trophy. Another top-10 finish followed at Sand Moor in August before the Moortown Masters last week.

Meanwhile, Roper secured victory in the order of merit with his fifth place finish at Moortown following a string of high finishes over the closing events. The 400 points Miller acquired at Moortown wasn't enough to topple Roper but guaranteed second place.
