Birkett looking good in the Race to Alwoodley

Halifax Golf Club's Mark Birkett has booked his place in the Grand Final of the Yorkshire Matchplay Golf Championship.

Partnering Charlie Ansell from Clayton Golf Club, in the new event for amateur golfers throughout Yorkshire, the duo sealed their place in the final at Alwoodley Golf Club on Thursday 16th September by defeating Colin Nolan and Daniel McBride 5&4 in the two-legged 36 hole regional final.

After five gruelling games, that started back in April, Birkett & Ansell came through the 'Pairs West' section as champions and will now take on the winners from the three other regions (North, East & South) and battle it out to determine the overall Yorkshire champions.

Other local interest lies in the Individual section where Gary Dunkley is just 18 holes away from securing his place at Alwoodley. The Dewsbury man, however, must turn round a one hole deficit following the first leg away at Birley Wood if he is to make it through.
