Colcombe aiming to follow in father's footsteps

Longley Park's Matthew Colcombe will be hoping to follow in his dad's footsteps when he takes on Matthew Broadbent in the 36 hole final of the HHDUGC Matchplay Championship at Huddersfield Golf Club on Sunday.

Colcombe only booked his spot in the final after a 2nd extra hole play-off victory against Fixby's Andrew Wilford in the semi-final, although, his quarter-final was a much more straight-forward affair with a 4&3 success over Tom Calvert from Willow Valley.

His father Mick, a member at Dewsbury, landed the title back in 1989 and after some impressive performances this year Matthew, who was the leading player in the Union Team Championship at West End, will start as red hot favourite.

Broadbent, however, should not be under-estimated after defeating Union Strokeplay Champion, Adam Cryer, in the semi-final, Order of Merit winner, Ben Adamson in the quarter-final and former champion (on several occasions, Andrew Whitworth, at the last 16 stage.

If Colcombe was to pull the double off it would emulate 1990 winner, Mark England, who captured the trophy just six years after his dad, Keith, was crowned champion.

Results: (Saturday 18th September) at Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club.

Adam Cryer (Woodsome Hall) beat Brad Tupman (Huddersfield) 1 up
