There is a new winter golf competition for Huddersfield golfers to enter during the coming off-season.
The 2010/11 Yorkshire Matchplay Winter Pairs is a knockout competition for male golfers across Yorkshire who want to keep their competitive golfing juices flowing throughout the late-autumn and winter months.
The format is Betterball Pairs played between November 2010 and March 2011 with a finals day at the famous Moortown Golf Club, venue for the 1929 Ryder Cup and a top 100 ranked golf course near Leeds.
The new winter event is designed to compliment the main Yorkshire Matchplay Golf Championship, which launched this year and has proved hugely popular with players throughout the county. That tournament reaches it's climax at Alwoodley Golf Club next Thursday where Mark Birkett from Halifax Golf Club is the regions sole representative.
The man behind the tournament is Huddersfield based Ed Battye and he explained that it is feedback from competitors that has persuaded him to run the event, "Several people who have taken part in the main competition this year have asked if we could do anything during the off-season as there is little in the way of competitive golf for the best part of six months of the year."
Battye, who's amateur golf website Golf Empire has really taken off during 2010, added, "Golfers will only have to win a maximum of five games to reach Moortown and there is a degree of flexibility as to when the games have to be played."
Like the main competition the first round is played over 36 holes on a home and away basis, so golfers are guaranteed at least one round away from their home course. Subsequent matches are played over 18 holes with a draw taking place for home advantage. In early rounds pairs will be drawn at local courses to minimise travelling distances.
The last four pairs standing will play the semi-finals on the morning of Sunday 27th March 2011 at Moortown. The winners of each semi-final will then contest the final in the afternoon whilst the morning losers will play-off for 3rd place.
Due to daylight restrictions entries are limited to the first 128 pairs that apply and with the entry-fee at just £20 per pair places are expected to fill up very quickly. Find out more.
