Union Report

The Halifax/Huddersfield team finished off the Yorkshire IDU League season with a home match against the Sheffield Union at Halifax West End Golf Club, on Sunday the 5th September 2010.

The match was played in a tricky gusting wind, which made shot selection and decision making a key aspect in all the games.

Most of the foursomes games were closely fought affairs, apart from the first game out, Aaron Schnacke & Ben Adamson, and the last game, Tom Calvert & Ben Crowther, who both lost their games 3 & 2.

Andy Shaw & James Skirrow finally closed out their game on the 18th green, when Shaw holed a 4’ putt for the win, Brad Tupman & Iain Powell fought all the way to the end halving the 18th hole, but unfortunately losing the game by 1 hole.

Adam Cryer & Andy Wilford, got themselves in a position to win the 18th hole and the game, but an unfortunate 3 putt cost them the chance to win the hole and the game to finish all square, a highlight of this match was an ace by Dominic Moon on the par 3 13th, one bounce and into the hole with a wedge!

Matthew Colcombe & Adam Walker, had built up a 3 hole lead, but they let their advantage slip away and had to settle for a halved game, leaving the morning foursomes result Halifax/Huddersfield 4, Sheffield 8.

In the afternoon singles Schnacke halved his game with England International, Sam Young, the highlight of this match was an albatross 2 on the par 5 7th hole for Young who holed his 2nd shot.

Skirrow fought hard in his match, but was beaten 3 & 2.

Adamson won a very close match on the last hole, his opponent Tom Perry was blocked out in deep grass, he could only move the ball a short distance, he then hacked the ball out onto the fairway, and finally got on the green for 4, Adamson missed the green short, and then chipped past the pin, leaving himself a very fast downhill putt, with 2 putts to win the hole and the game, Ben's first putt rolled on past the pin 12 feet, but an heroic putt back up the hill won him his game, as the afternoon progressed it became very apparent that this singles win had catapulted Ben to the top of the Order of Merit, where he was not going to be caught.

Shaw was in fine form, soon holding a 3-hole advantage, and an eagle 3 by his opponent Richard Oades on the par 5 16th prolonged matters to the 17th where Andy closed the match winning 2 & 1. Powell powered through his game building a 3-hole lead after 12 holes, going on to win his game by the margin of 5 & 3. Both Cryer and Tupman couldn’t get anything going in their games losing 4 & 3, and 3 & 2 respectively.

Colcombe was firing an all cylinders against Moon. Moon could not repeat his hole in 1 feat of the morning round, and after 11 holes being 6 down, he conceded the game to Matthew saying he wasn’t feeling very well. Team Captain Chris Mear quipped, "I must admit whenever I have been 6 down with 7 to play, I felt under the weather as well!"

With four games still out on the course Halifax/Huddersfield needed to win three of the four games, however Crowther was struggling and lost his match 6 & 5, Walker was 1 up, Wilford was 1 down after 14 holes, and Calvert was 1 up, Tom Calvert went on to win his game 2 & 1. Andy Wilford couldn’t get back into his game and lost 3 & 1, Adam Walker lost holes 15 & 16, and eventually the game on the last hole.

Result: Halifax/Huddersfield 15 Sheffield 21

Ben Adamson won the OOM with 30 points. Iain Powell, Ben Crowther and Brad Tupman were all joint second with 28 points.

Mear concluded, "Thanks to all our sponsors; Stromberg for Trousers, Parnell Riley for the OOM and Clough Manor for the Golf Balls."
