New Professional at Crow Nest

Crow Nest Park Golf Club has just recruited one of the games newest professionals.

Gareth Evans has joined forces with resident PGA professional Paul Everitt within the recently formed Diamond Golf Studio which is based at the growing Hove Edge club. Both professionals will be giving lessons either on the automated driving range, on the short game area or on the course.

Gareth, who is a former Yorkshire Amateur and English Counties Champion, and a recent member of England's "elite" golf squad, recently passed his examinations and became a fully qualified EGTF professional.

Already members have started booking lessons with the new member of the teaching team and the mood within the membership is very positive as the season swings into action with new memberships being taken up on a seemingly daily basis.

If anyone wants to take up a lesson with either Paul or Gareth then please telephone 01484 401121.

No Slacking at Outlane for the final

The Mid-Summer Championship Final on Sunday May 9th has several players looking for their first ever major success and the 30 leading players from the qualifying round go out in reverse order.

The final trio of Chris Jepson, Jim Pryce and Neil Hughes all had a nett 66 and with only 5 shots separating 1st and 30th a close finish could result in anyone winning, with players scores from their original round being added to the final.

Quite a few of the finalists are mid to high handicap players from the 133 entries and so the earlier tee off finalists will no doubt be watching the later players come in to check their totals.

Outlane L.E.G.S. Trophy - 10 years on and same team win it again ! (well virtually same team)!

The L.E.G.S. Trophy at Outlane will have familiar names engraved on it when presented to the team of Alan Arrowsmith, Mark Clare, Dave Cromack and Dennis Pearcey.

Ten years ago the same names were on the trophy, although Dennis Pearcey took his father Richards place, this time for the Lancashire Entertainers Golf Society trophy which they presented to the club for the use of the course for their charity events.

The best two scores count and with Alan Arrowsmith having a gross 38 on the first 9 holes it was matched on the back 9 holes by Mark Clare and a 15 under par was recorded.

One team who found they were 1 player short with a member stranded abroad recruited 13-year-old Joey Blackwell from the Saturday morning junior clinic which was taking place and he proved to be the star of the team with his 8 scoring holes on the card for their 132 total.

HANSON WINS FROM THE FRONT AT WILMSLOW

On a day of low scoring Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall) finally secured his first Players Tour win set up by a sparkling 8 birdie 65 in the morning round over the par 72 course only coming unstuck when he bogeyed the short 9th.

Surprisingly given the depth of good scoring this saw Chris lead at the halfway point by 4 shots from Rob Hearty, James Hepworth, Tom Murray and James Need.

The slightly warmer weather and perhaps better course knowledge saw some particularly good scores in the afternoon producing a threat to Chris's lead. Shortly after he went through the turn at 9 under amazingly after another bogey at the 9th, Paul Wesselingh handed in a 65 of his own, which proved to be the afternoon best, to set the clubhouse lead at the same number.

With sub par returns being handed in from many players it seemed likely that Chris would secure his win with another steady 9 holes. This he duly achieved although not without some late drama as a bogey at the 17th saw him on the par 5 18th back at 9 under needing a birdie to win. He achieved this in some style with a magnificent second shot to within 15 feet of the pin and with the old adage 'Got two take two' in mind carefully two putted for a thoroughly deserved victory.

Leading Scores:
1. Chris Hanson 65 + 69 - 134 (£2000 Woodsome Hall Golf Club )
2. Paul Wesselingh 70 + 65 - 135 (£1400 Kedleston Park Golf Club )
T3. Nick McCarthy 70 + 66 - 136 (£900 Ignite Sports / Moortown Golf Club )
T3. James Hepworth 69 + 67 - 136 (£900 Ilkley Golf Club)

The win takes Chris to second place in the Players Tour Order of Merit.

Jenkinson on form at Woodsome

The 2010 golf season started at Woodsome Hall Golf Club on Saturday 17th April when the Philip Haigh Tankard was won by former Union junior player Tom Jenkinson.

Jenkinson was in fine form posting a nett score of 61. His gross score of 66 was the lowest of the day. This was the first time the full course had been played since several of the bunkers were re-designed at the Fenay Bridge course during the winter period.

The recent increase in the Standard Scratch Score at Woodsome from 69 to 71 was also reflected in the CSS for the day which was 71.

HHDUGC Seniors vs Juniors

The HHDUGC curtain raiser was held at Bradley Park Golf Club, on Sunday the 18th April 2010, on an overcast afternoon, and with the greens recently hollow-tined and top dressed the putting game was always going to be tricky.

The match was played as a four ball better ball, match play, with shots being taken from the lowest handicap player, and three quarters of the difference in handicap being allowed.

The first match was Aaron Schnacke & Ben Adamson against Tom Calvert & Jack Woodhead. Schnacke was in irrepressible form with 2 eagles and several birdies, the senior team ran out easy winners by the margin of 7&5.

Match two was Brad Tupman & Adam Walker against Lewis Collier & Luke Pilkington. Pilkington eagled the par 5 5th hole to win the hole, they then went on a run and found themselves 4 up at the turn, Tupman then strung a run of 4 birdies in 5 holes, leaving the seniors 1 up stood on the 18th tee, but a magnificent eagle by the left handed Pilkington, his 2nd of the day won the hole and halved the match.

Match three was Andy Wilford & Chris Ingham, against Ryan Joyce & Michael Major, the senior team never got going, Major birdied holes one & two and the juniors never looked back closing out the match 5&4.

Match four paired Dave Stafford & Jared Ellison together, against Josh Bailes & Jamie Smith, again the juniors started taking control of the game early on, despite Stafford having a run of birdies on the back 9, the juniors stayed strong winning the game 3&2.

Match five paired Mark Birkett & Mark Hepworth together, against the junior pairing of George Bamford & Bradley Hardcastle. In a very closely fought match the senior team eventually ran out the winners, securing the match on the 17th hole with a par 3, to win the match 2&1.

The final match out on the course was Ben Crowther & Mathew Colcombe, against Ben Kaye & late stand in Tommy Ward the HH&DUGC Coaching officer, Tommy had to get his clubs out, due to Ethan Shaw of Marsden failing to turn up, the match was very close but swung the way of the juniors on the back 9, with Kaye & Ward winning 3 & 2.

The final result was 3½ - 2½ in favour of the juniors. There was some fantastic golf played in trying conditions, with some fine performances by Schnacke, Tupman, Stafford, and for the juniors Calvert, Pilkington, and Major. Senior Team Captain Chris Mear said"I don’t think it will be too long before the latter three are knocking on the door of the first team."

HHDGA Winter Alliance Result from Willow Valley

Early good weather deteriorated from mid-day as the cold North Easterly wind picked up, the day ending like mid-winter, during the latest HHDGA Winter Alliance at Willow Valley on Tuesday 13th April.

The course was in very good condition, being unusually firm and dry for an Alliance event. However, the cold wind kept scoring low with only two pairs bettering level par.

The Pro-Am section was won by West End’s Darren Arber (scr) and David Stafford (2) with 35 points. Stafford scored the bulk of the points, coming in on 13 holes, including a gross and a net birdie. Tied for second were Bradley Hall’s Robert Booth (scr) and Andy Hare (4) and Bradley Park’s Tom Wild (scr) and Jack Pearcey (5) on 33 points, Pearcey scoring a nett eagle on the 2nd.

The Am-Am section was won in fine style by Andrew Williams (8) and Tristan Gurd (6) of Dewsbury with 39 points despite not scoring on the last hole. The pair had 7 nett birdies with a nett eagle to Williams on the 3rd, but Gurd scored on 13 holes.

Another Dewsbury pair, Jimmy Caine (3) and Edward Battye (2), were second with 37 points, again with a very unbalanced card as Battye scored on 13 holes. Willow Valley’s Darren Bentley (12) and Richard Asher (12) were third with 36 points.

The next event is the Page Trophy on Thursday 29th April at West End.

Waller Cup Qualifiers Decided

The final qualifying round of the Waller Cup was held at Bradley Hall on Saturday 17th April when 165 competitors were playing for the four available places in the two divisions.

Leading the field in the 1st Division (handicaps up to 15) was Junior Captain Andy Hare (3) with his nett score of 68, which bettered the same score from the first player out, Mick Shea, on a back 9 count back. They were closely followed by the new Captain, David Whitaker and the 'evergreen' Andy Whitworth with nett scores of 69 and leaving Phil Binks with an identical score in 5th place on a count back.

In Division 2, Raymond Roebuck was a comfortable winner with a nett 67 which was four strokes better than the other qualifiers, Ian Booth, Mike Arden and Peter Broadley.

Although the weather was pleasant, with light westerly winds, most competitors found it difficult to score and the resulting CSS score of 72 was two shots over the standard scratch score.

Cresta Trophy gets underway

The Cresta Trophy for the Outlane juniors has got underway with the format of a unique version of matchplay between themselves.

It is played during any school holidays and with 3 points available during each game an exciting final batch of matches can lead to the winner.

The matchplay format consists of 1 point for the first 9 holes and also 1 point for the second 9 holes and then 1 point for whoever wins the match. You can get 3 points in total but last year saw a number of matches with a 2-1 score and Mark Saville (sixth from the left in photo) clinching an exciting final halved match to take the Cresta Trophy with 28 points, winning by just one point.

The format gives juniors experience in matchplay they would not normally get if they are knocked out early in club competitions and they can still participate even after a loss.

EWGA Northern Foursomes Update

Woodsome Hall’s Sarah Arrowsmith and Margaret Blakeley lost out to the mother and daughter pairing of Lynda and Natalie Ireland from Shipley in the 3rd round of this year’s event at Pontefract, losing on the 18th green after a hard fought match.

New greens come into play at Outlane

The new 7th and 8th greens at Outlane Golf Club came into play for the first time during their recent April medal.

Whilst the new surfaces looked in beautiful condition the 247 yard par 3 eighth, which is stroke 1, proved to be tough as the average score of 5.12 told the tale. However, junior player Bryn Jenkinson is the first to birdie it as his drive reached the green for him to sink his putt!!

Paul Walker won the first division medal with a 65 followed by Martin Jackson and Jarrad Hazelden with a 66 although the latter could count himself unlucky when his drive on the 17th finished in a tree and he walked off with a 7 when a par 4 would have won him the competition.

The second division had ex-Derbyshire cricketer Shaukat Dar knocking up a blistering 63 nett with Paul Anderson and junior player Matthew Clark registering a 67 nett score.

The photo shows tee sponsors Darren and Julie Kinder of Oaks Construction Company with the Outlane President Trevor Pickles and outgoing Outlane captain Peter Lawrence Brown with their tee sign board.

April Medal Results
Division 1:
1. Paul Walker = 65 nett
2. Martin Jackson = 66 nett
3. Jarrad Hazelden = 66 nett

Division 2:
1. Shaukat Dar = 63 nett
2. Paul Anderson = 67 nett
3. Matthew Clark = 67 nett

Woodsome Hall Duo Make EWGA Progress

Sarah Arrowsmith and Margaret Blakeley from Woodsome Hall progressed through two rounds of the EWGA Northern Foursomes matchplay at Pontefract on Tuesday 13th April.

In the morning they beat Trudy Hubbard and Sue Chapman from Silverdale 2 & 1 and then in the afternoon they beat Sheila Sunderland and Winifred Varley from Otley 2 & 1.

In last year’s event at Formby the Woodsome pairing lost in the Quarter Final on the second day. They now face Lynda and Natalie Ireland of Shipley in the round of the last 16.

Goodair Denied Course Record

On the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of April the Hanging Heaton Cup Qualifier was held, with 64 players qualifying for the knock out rounds.

Alongside that competition the Ford Amateur was also played for, and the winner with a 64 gross, (62 nett) was Tom Goodair. Sadly due to preferred lies Tom could not receive the course record.

In second spot was Joshua Morton with a 64 nett. Both players are Juniors and once again the Junior section is beginning to dominate the competitions, with their fantastic golf.

Waller Cup Qualifier at Bradley Hall

Saturday saw the first of the two qualifying rounds of the Waller Cup at Bradley Hall Golf Club.

The qualifying rounds are of strokeplay and the first four in divisions 1 (up to 15) and 2 (16 to 28) then go into a matchplay knockout over the season to determine the winners of each division.

Scoring on the day was generally very good, due in no small part to the warm temperatures and an almost windless day and a course that is rapidly drying out following the very wet winter. In addition, the influence of the junior coach, Robert Booth, was reflected in the scores with juniors, Freddy Fox, Tom Smith, Josh Bailes and Andy Hare occupying the first nine places in Division 1.

Leading the field of 167 golfers was Freddy Fox (13) with a nett score of 65, to edge out a former junior of the club, David Ellis (8) by a single shot and by two shots from Ian Hallett (4) and Tom Smith (11). It is the first time Freddy has lead the field and with his determination and no lack of skill it will not be his last.

Other notable scores were recorded by Josh Bailes who lost on a back nine count back for the last qualifying place and Andy Whitworth (+1) who has proved over a long period of time that he can never be ignored with the best gross of 67 (nett 68)

In Division 2, early starter, Tony Wormald returned a nett 70 which held to the last for first place but he was closely challenged by Raymond Roebuck (71), Toby Wood and Gordon Bedford, both returning scores of 72.

184 Golfers Welcome Captain's at Bradley Hall

The official 'driving-in' of the new captains took place at Bradley Hall at 1pm on Saturday 3rd April when the format for the day was a 'Texas Scramble'.

The new captain, David Whitaker, was accompanied by his vice captain, Roy Lofts, Lady Captain Elenor Abbott and the Rabbit Captain, Tony Beddis, in a marvellous field of 184 players.

Starting second at 7.10am, in waterproofs and sweaters, was the team of Gary Shuttleworth, John M.Woodhouse, Paul Toon and David Ward who completed their round with a nett score of 54.5 which proved impossible to better, even taking into account the pleasant sunny weather which developed as the day progressed.

However, the team of Chris Mather, junior captain Andy Hare, his vice captain Josh Bailes and another junior Tom Smith did their best but just fell short with a score of 55.3.

The Texas Scramble format without doubt benefits the male golfer, so one of the best performances of the day was the team of the previous Captain and previous Lady Captain, Nick and Elaine Wheelwright playing with Andrew and Debbie Garnett who returned a commendable score of 57.3 which enabled them to claim sixth position.

In the evening, over 100 members and wives joined the new captains and enjoyed an excellent buffet with live entertainment.

Leading scores:
1. G.Shuttleworth, J.M.Woodhouse, P.Toon, D.Ward = 54.5
2. C.Mather, T.Smith. A.Hare, J.Bailes = 55.3

Bradley Park Double in Alliance

Dave Mitcheson and J Pearcey from Bradley Park scored a superb 47 points to win the latest HHDGA fixture at Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club.

They won by a single point from Independent Fixby members Mike Dempsey and Pete Newey who edged home pairing of Mick Appleyard and S Hopkinson into second place virtue of a better back-nine.

In the pro-am section Tom Wild and J Hill made it a double for the Bradley Park club when their 43 points was good enough to win by two.

The full results can be seen here.

An updated Pro order of merit and champion club table can also now be seen.

The picture shows from left; Bradley Hall captain Nick Wheelwright, Mitcheson, Alliance president Richard Badrock.
