The competition at Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club on Saturday 29th May was the 'Darnton Cup' a men's betterball and following the recent excellent weather for the past week, it seemed almost inevitable that it would break for the weekend.
This proved to be the case and although there was virtually no winds, the event was played from start to finish in persistent rain. The greens however, having been top dressed at the start of the week, were in excellent condition and it would be hard to find any better in the County.
Despite the rain, low scores were returned throughout the day with 23 pairs breaking the par score of 70. The early pace setters, Jonathan Hyland and Mick Oldroyd setting a challenging nett target of 62 and were closely followed by Past Captain, Michael White and Colin Walker with 63.
Going out in the afternoon, and in the worst of the weather, Paul Taylor and Philip Pitchforth then moved into the lead on a back nine countback with another 62. The eventual winners howver, were Dean Alexis and Carl Gillespie with a further 62 but with the better back nine.
This was was a just reward as they had actually achieved a nett 61 but had failed to notice a 4 on their card on the 5th hole when they had actually taken 3 shots.
Leading scores
1. D.Alexis & C.Gillespie 62 (back 9)
2. P.Pitchforth & P.Taylor 62 (back 9)
3. J.Hyland & M.Oldroyd 62
4. M.White & C.Walker 63
5. M.Crystal and D.Kerr 64
6. A.Morrison & Rob Holroyd 64
7. S.J.Wilkinson & P.Binks 65
8. R.Swailes & B.Bain 65
9. D.Maguire & A.Pearson 65
