Hallett Hammers Home Victory in Hamer Rosebowl

The 'John Hamer Rosebowl' was contested at Bradley Hall on Saturday 26th June with a field of 150 male golfers.

Despite a strong easterly breeze blowing up the course, many fine scores were achieved. Leading the field was a new member, Matthew Hallett, the son of Ian Hallett, a member of the Scratch Team. Matthew joined the club at the beginning of the season when he was given a handicap of 24 and which he had reduced to 20 prior to teeing off in this latest competition which carried a maximum handicap of 18.

Playing 12 shots under his official handicap gave him the winning nett score of 60 which was 5 strokes clear of the field and a new handicap of 14.

Continuing his recent run of form and taking second place, was Martin Bird (11) with a nett score of 65, together with Terry Jackson (7) in third place. Even though 24 players bettered the C.S.S. score of 70, many struggled when playing into the easterly wind, particularly during the morning.

Andy Whitworth once more recorded the lowest gross of 70 but he was closely followed by Terry Jackson, Richard Leeming and Michael White, all recording 72's

Leading scores:
M.Hallett 78 - 18 = 60
M.Bird 76 - 11 = 65

Bird & Williams return to form for Jubilee Trophy win

Despite a cold north wind numerous low scores were returned in the Jubilee Trophy (mens greensome) at Bradley Hall.

The course throughout was in excellent condition and in particular the greens which were running fast and true.

Starting in mid morning, Bryn Lockwood and Raymond Roebuck, returned an excellent nett score of 63.2 which was not bettered until late afternoon when Alan Heywood and David Senior posted a new target with their 62.2.

This appeared to be the winning score until virtually the last pair, past captain, Martin Bird and Bill Williams walked off the 18th green just before 7pm with their combined gross score of 71 nett 60.6 and the title for 2010. Both have had dips in form in recent times but this season have been putting together good rounds and the win was both popular and well deserved.

Tupman on Form but East Riding Claim Big Victory

The Halifax, Huddersfield Union team played their second match of the season away against the East Riding Union at Hull Golf Club on Sunday the 13th June, and came up against a very strong East Riding side, the east coast team on this sort of form must be strongly fancied to retain their Inter District Union League title.

The Hull Golf Club was in fantastic condition, with the Greens fast and receptive, good golf was the order of the day in ideal golfing conditions, unfortunately it was the East Riding team that produced the best golf on the day.

The result in the foursomes set up the home team with the momentum to carry on and win the game convincingly, the home side were 9 – 3 up after the foursomes, a good win by Iain Powell & Brad Tupman, and a halved match by Dave Stafford & Ben Crowther, the highlights for the visitors.

The singles went very much the same way with the strong East Riding team always in control, they won the singles 19 – 5, to close out the match 28 – 8.

The Halifax Huddersfield winners in the afternoon singles were Tom Goodair & Brad Tupman, and a very hard fought half by Dave Stafford.

The next match is at home against the Harrogate Union at Huddersfield Golf Club on June 27th.

Unusual incident at Outlane's 4th hole - WHO IS THIS PERSON ?

Unfortunately they don't know who the person is but a golfer holed out on the par 4 fourth hole at Outlane Golf Club without their ball touching grass!

It happened like this... The mystery golfer teed off and their ball went straight into a fairway bunker. They then they played it out straight into a greenside bunker and then their next shot went straight into the hole which meant that the ball never touched grass from the tee to the hole. The club would like to know who it is for their newsletter.

Meanwhile the above picture shows Steve Beeby, sponsor of Outlane's teams' shirts with Nick Hirst (scratch team captain ), Andy Mclaughlin (handicap team captain ), Bryn Jenkinson (junior team captain ) all looking smart in their new attire.

Andy back to Plus 2 as Flathers lands Lilley Cup

The Lilley Cup (men's stableford competiton) was held at Bradley Hall Golf Club on Saturday 12 June with a field of 155.

For a change, the better scores came from the later starters but a reasonable target of 39 points from Ian Booth, Peter Skelton and Richard Payne, the latter recording 24 points on the outward nine, provided a good target to beat.

Junior team member Josh Bailes and scratch team member, Martin Cockcroft went one better with 40 points but they were unable to contend with the 43 points from almost the last out, Andy Flathers. Andy has recently joined the club from Bradley Park and was playing in only his second competition and obviously had no problems with his new course and in the process, dropping into the 'tigers' section.

Andy Whitworth, one year shy of his 50th birthday, once more recorded the lowest gross of 66 and in the process reclaimed his plus 2 handicap.

Willow Valley Set for YPGA Championship

The Yorkshire Professional Golfers Association holds its annual Championship on Tuesday 15th & Wednesday the 16th June at Willow Valley Golf for the 10th consecutive year next week.

This major tournament in the golfing calendar will see 100 to 120 of the regions top professional golfers teeing off for the coveted Yorkshire P. G. A .Trophy and the £2000 first prize. On the 16th June, the top 66 scores and ties from the first day will go out in score order, with a sudden death ‘play off’ on the 18th hole, if at the end of play the scores are tied.

A Pro-am event brings the tournament to a close on the 17th June. Up to 30 teams will take part, each vying for the £500 first prize.

The championship was held at Fulford Golf Club, York for seven years prior to it moving to Willow Valley in 2001 and can also boast hosting such prestigious tournaments as The Martini International and The Benson And Hedges International.
The winner is presented with a trophy specially commissioned by Mr & Mrs Newton, owners of Willow Valley. The trophy is a solid silver salver and has been hand engraved with a view of the 2nd hole on the Willow Valley course. The trophy can be viewed in the clubhouse alongside all the names of the tournament winners since it began over 75 years ago. Recent holders of the trophy include names such as Gordon Brand who now challenges regularly on the European & US seniors tour.

A cheque for £2000 will be handed over to the triumphant winner at a special dinner held in the club house on the evening of the 17th June. The prize fund of £5000 is the biggest in the Yorkshire region and has given the event a home worthy of championship golf, which the club is duly proud of. The club’s Willow Valley course is where the 36 hole stroke play event will take place with the course pushed to its maximum length of 7034yards of the professional Blue Tees an extra 500yards more than the members competition tees.

Commenting, Willow Valley’s own Club Professional, Julian Haworth says: “The course this year is in the best condition I have seen during my 15 year association with Willow Valley Golf, it makes you proud to be a part of it all. This event is a great test for professional golfers, some of who will still have ambitions to make it on the European Tour. The 7000 yard plus course, with 11 lakes and streams along with undulating greens certainly makes Willow Valley a good test for any golf Professional looking to make the big step up to the tournament ranks.”

In the all 8 previous years the championship has been held at Willow Valley the lowest winning score has been 145 , 1 over par. The course record for Professionals was set in 2003, a score of 70 (2 under par) for 18 holes from the Blue tees by Nigel Parkinson (Dore & Totley GC).

Jonathan Gaunt, one of Europe’s leading golfing architects designed the 7030 yard course to challenge the skill of the most experienced golfer and it includes numerous water hazards, with the 6th hole having a rock face and water guarding the green making it difficult to get near the pin to make birdie, whilst the island green on the 14th hole has the golfer deciding whether to lay up or go for the green.

Anyone interested in entering the Pro-Am competition should contact the Yorkshire P. G. A. or Willow Valley Golf Club. The entry fee is £210 per team (3 amateurs and one professional), this includes a meal , professionals can be provided.

Sunshine on Ladies Open at Elland

Thursday June 3rd began with beautiful sunshine and very little breeze, which remained throughout the day – perfect for golf!

The Ladies Open Am/Am at Elland was a very popular event this year with twenty one 4 Lady teams taking part.

The format was Stableford, best two scores to count off ¾ handicap. Prizes up for grabs were, Team Place; Winner, Second and Third, Nearest the Line on the 5th and Nearest the Pin on the 18th.

The team in first place were Janet Evans (Elland), Jenny Hill (Harrogate), Di Illingworth (Davenport), and Linda Lomax (Davenport), coming in with a score of 79 points. Janet said her team members had not played at Elland before and thoroughly enjoyed the day, Janet found the course to be in an “immaculate” condition. The ladies all scored birdies on the par 5 holes which helped the final score and despite not actually scoring well team-wise on the 18th, Linda did win the prize for nearest the pin.

Second place went to Mary Mellor and Annie Green (Elland), L Jamieson and M Chatfield (West End) with 77 points. Third place was secured by Bev Taylor and Olwyn Hornby (Elland), Sheila Harrison and Olwen Mercer (Bradley Park) with 76 points.

Nearest Line: Jen Dawson (West End)
Nearest Pin: Linda Lomax (Davenport)

The event was organised by Lady Captain, Carole Wood who was well supported by club members in a variety of roles. ‘Mr Starters’ were Peter Gul, David Nicholson (Captain) and Jack Godridge, ‘Spotters’ on the 2nd were Michael Kenny, Peter Gul, Barry Littlewood, Gerald Walker and Keith Leeming. The Ladies lounge was converted for the day and doubled as Reception and Half-way House, here to offer a helping hand were Margaret Walker, Christine Sunderland, Kath Godridge, Gloria Aspinall, Linda Gul, Julia Stanger, Annie Green, Carmen Leonard and Sally Thompson.

Pictured are winning team; Di Illingworth, Linda Lomax, Janet Evans and Jenny Hill.

EARLY BIRD TANVEER SETS THE PACE AND NOBODY CAN BEAT IT

Tanveer Mirza completed his round in the Doug Clark Cup before most people had completed their breakfast and his 7.00 am start proved to be worthwhile as the temperature rose but the scoring didn't.

This was Tanveers first victory since he joined the club and he now can look forward to playing off his new handicap of 18 after he warmed the course up for the rest of the 155 entries. Chris Twigg had the distinction of having the first two on the new 249 yard eighth hole which you are normally happy to walk off with a four.

DOUG CLARK CUP RESULT
Tanveer Mirza 85 gross - (20) - 65 nett
Steve Bradley 81 gross - (15 ) - 66 nett
Ian Ainley 83 gross - (16 ) - 67 nett
Kevan Sykes 78 gross -(11 ) - 67 nett

Howker is Top Dog in Rabbits Comp

On Saturday, the Rabbit Captain, Tony Beddis held his 'Rabbit Captains Day' at Bradley Hall Golf Club when 185 golfers enjoyed weather more in keeping with southern Spain than West Yorkshire. With rain the previous evening, the course was in first class condition and resulted in many fine scores being returned.

The main emphasis of the day was for the Rabbit golfers who accounted for one third of the field and competed for the Rabbit Captains Cup along with four other prizes and the winner was left-hander, Rob Holroyd (18) with the best of the nett 65's. and beating Brian Dale (22) and Kevin Barker (19). The final prize was picked up by Richard Payne (17) with the best of the 67's.

The remaining 116 'tigers' competed for the minor prizes and the clear winner was Ernie Howker (15) who at the start of the day was within 1 over par score of becoming a 'Rabbit'. However he played one of his best rounds for many years to take the Tigers prize with a nett 63. In second place was the first player to tee off at 7am, Peter Mason (7) with a nett 65, just edging out Clive McFadzean (3) with a gross 69, nett 66.

He also finished in second place for the best gross prize which was won for the 'umpteenth' time by the evergreen Andy Whitworth (+1) who shot 66.

The day was rounded off with a cabaret dinner and prize presentation attended by around 100 members and guests. All in all an excellent day enjoyed by all who participated.

The CSS was 70.

Hole-in-one season at Dewsbury

Ian Preston recently recorded his 6th hole-in-one while playing the 9th hole at Dewsbury District Golf Club. He used an eight iron at the 132-yard famous "Tom Morris" hole.

His round was also memorable for another reason, his playing partner, who shall remain nameless, lost his clubs (the full set including the bag and trolley) whilst playing the 12th hole!!

The player chipped onto the green and then replaced his wedge into his bag which was on an electric trolley and took out his putter. On completion of the hole he returned only to find his clubs had disappeared. After Initially believing they had been stolen he began looking around and after few minutes and with no luck in locating them he returned to the clubhouse leaving his playing partners to continue their rounds.

He searched the course using a buggy only to eventually find them abandoned in the gorse alongside the 10th hole some 500 yards from where they were lost. Apparently the trolley had not been turned off properly and had just carried on until it came to rest in the gorse.

Ian, a former Club Captain, did not let this spoil his celebration, as he in the traditional manner bought a drink for everyone in the clubhouse on his return.

Meanwhile John Michael also recorded his second ever hole-in-one last month. He has also holed out with his tee shot another time but it was his 2nd ball off the tee! His latest ace was achieved using an eight iron at the 129-yard 18th hole set right in front of the clubhouse at Dewsbury.

John (right) is pictured along with his playing partner Doug Roberts on the balcony overlooking the green where the hole-in-one was achieved. Drinks were provided in the clubhouse to celebrate the ACE!

Belt equals course record to win Dewsbury Pro-Am

Dewsbury District Golf Club held their 30th annual Pro-Am competition yesterday which was run in conjunction with the Yorkshire Professional Golfer's Association.

Forty 4-man teams, all of which included a Professional, competed for Individual and team prizes.

The course was in fantastic condition as the rain over the previous few days and subsequent warm sunny conditions enabled the greens staff to present the course at its best.

The course and weather were conducive to almost perfect golfing conditions and this was reflected in the scores returned.

A bonus of £500 was on offer for breaking the course record and Alex Belt from Bridlington pushed to do just that, eventually matching the previous best of 63. Meanwhile Nick Stead of Shipley, in the last team on the course, returned a 64. Dewsbury's own Professional, Nigel Hirst fired a very creditable 68.

The Team prize was won by the side representing "Needles Inn" with a score of 119, 23 under par! Five shots back were A to Z Business Managers & Consultants along with a team from Shipley Golf Club.

The evening concluded with a prize presentation and entertainment provided in the Pinnacle suite at Dewsbury District Golf Club.
