Owen has day to remember

Glyn Owen had a Captains Day to remember last Saturday, when approx 150 members and guests gathered to help him celebrate his special day.

The days competition, the Captains Day Cup was won by long standing member Andy Mitchell, who returned to the winners enclosure after and absence of 6 years, with a fine gross score of 69 net 63.

He pushed long time leader Tom Holmes into the runners up spot, who had shot a gross 70 net 65 earlier in the day. One of the last players to finish Mitchell thanked the green staff during his speech for once again providing a course in outstanding condition.

The very strong attendance for the evening presentation surprised and pleased Glyn Owen, Captain 2010, who had provided an evening function based on an Hawaiian/ Beach Party theme.

The guests were provided with a surf simulator machine, a theme dressed room, a Barbecue and Cocktails along with a selection of Canapes served on platters. The function went on into the early hours of Sunday as everyone enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the singing by local vocalist "Bubbles".

The successful day proved once again that the Club at Hove Edge is enjoying a surge in popularity and also as testament to the support that current Club Captain Owen and his Vice Captain Dean Wilson have enjoyed so far this season.

The photos shows Club Captain Glyn Owen with his banner and winner Andy Mitchell with the his trophy.

Good Couple of Weeks for Hanson

After several wins already this season Chris Hanson feels that the last couple of weeks have been the best of the season so far.

Firstly, he had a return back to the EuroPro Tour at The Players Club in Bristol. A poor first round in bad conditions, where he shot +7 (77), left him in T98th position. From there he shot probably one of the best two round totals of level par and -1 to move up the field for a total of +6 and into T10th position!

He then went on to the Players Tour at Wychwood Park and won the event by two shots from the winner of the last EuroPro event, Matt Evans. Hanson shot scores of level par (72) and a bogey free -7 (65) for a -7 total.

He has also had chance to get his website (www.chrishansongolf.com) more up to date with info on himself and sponsors.

Bogey Win for Ward

On Saturday 24th July the 'Country Members Cup' was held at Bradley Hall. The event is a 'bogey' competition which is a form of stroke play in which play is against the fixed par score at each hole. The winner being the player who wins the most holes in aggregate.

Setting the early pace with a score of plus 5, was Kim Oswell (15) who returned to the club this year after a season at West End. That proved to be sufficient to keep out recently retired police officer, Mick White (3) who returned a plus 4 and in so doing dropped his handicap back to 2.

Another recently retired police officer, John Greenwood (12) then moved into second place with a further plus 5 return.

This appeared to be a day for the police service, as a current serving officer, Damian Roebuck (12), returned a further plus 4, but teeing off just before noon, David Ward (11) and a civilian, then returned a further plus 5 but with the better back nine score of plus 4, to take the title.

It's Nick's Day at Bradley Hall

Again a competition at Bradley Hall was played with a stiff breeze blowing down the course and making scoring for the majority of the field, difficult and the CSS being raised to 71.

Together with the wind, the occasional showers did not improve matters. The weather no doubt accounting for the 34 'no returns' out of the field of 152.

Standing on the the par five16th tee, David Deadman (7), was in a very strong position at 3 under gross but the momentum was spoiled when he inadvertently drove off the forward yellow markers and had to 're-load' from the whites and this resulted in him dropping 3 shots and finally finishing in an unlucky 13th place.

Of the early starters, Mick Jones(15), was leading at lunchtime with a nett 68 but was soon overtaken by Bryn Lockwood (8) on a card count back. Union Junior Team player, Josh Bailes (6), then moved into third slot with the lowest gross score of 75, nett 69.

This looked like being the finishing order until the penultimate group reached the clubhouse and Nick Lumb (10) slipped into the winning position with his nett score of 67.

Calderdale Sports Award for Willow Valley

Willow Valley Golf were awarded a Calderdale Sports Award by the Hipperholme & Lightcliffe Schools Partnership in the category of Outstanding Contribution to school to club links. The awards evening took place at the Victoria Theatre Halifax, the award was presented by the Majoress of Halifax.

Commenting on the recognition on behalf of the coaching team and Willow Valley Golf Julian Haworth said "We are proud to be recognised for this award which reflects the hard work that has been put in to taking golf in to schools in Calderdale, Darren and I have made it a goal of our teaching academy to introduce as many new children to golf as we can over the last 12 months.

"Though it should be noted that without the tireless work of Anne Henderson who coordinates all the sports links in our area, non of this would have been possible.

"Now that we have started this work we intend to continue for as long as there is the opportunity to deliver Tri - Golf and Golf Extreme in local schools. Its been very rewarding and the enthusiasm you see on the children's faces is reward enough."

SUNDAY BEST FOR SIMON WINS MR.CAPTAINS WEEKEND

Simon Wagstaff produced a 1-under par round of golf to win the Captain's Weekend Prize. He was the only person in the whole of the Sunday medal round to break par with the standard scratch 72 compared with 69 on Saturday.

However the round of the weekend came on Sunday from 14-year-old Nathan Lockwood (pictured) who was playing in the Junior Stableford competition. His 41 points was quite remarkable considering the difficult conditions. He scored on every hole and had a gross 94 which resulted in a 66 nett which meant he also beat par.

The separate Saturday and Sunday rounds combine for the Captains Prize so Simon's two rounds won it with division 1 and division 2 winners having their own competitions on each day. The Saturday saw Paul Phillips winning the first division with a nett 65 but the second division went to Stuart Swift who's 63 nett was even more remarkable as he thought he had blown it with a 8! up the last.

The tough Sunday conditions had Peter Lawton clinching a count back with a 71 nett in the first division and Stuart Cranks 73 nett winning the second division. Elliott Wilson won the Saturday Junior stableford competition rattling up an amazing 49 points to yet again reduce his handicap to 20.

CAPTAINS PRIZE
1. Simon Wagstaff - 72 + 70 = 142 nett
2.Steve Cooper -72 + 71 = 143 nett
3 Steve McNair - 68 + 75 = 143 nett

Saturday Division 1
1. Paul Phillips = 65 nett
2 Paul Walker = 66 nett

Division 2
1. Stuart Swift = 63 nett
2. John Simmons = 63 nett

Sunday Division 1
1. Peter Lawton = 71 nett.
2. Scott Cauldwell = 71 nett

Division 2
1. Stuart Crank = 73 nett
2. Tony Stead = 74 nett

Saturday Junior Prize: Elliott Wilson = 49 points
Sunday Junior Prize: Nathan Lockwood = 41 points

No Turkey At Christmas for Willow Valley Pair

The BMW Pro Captain Challenge at Huddersfield Golf Club

A weather interrupted 7 1/2 hour round at Huddersfield Golf Club was finally brought to an end by the sound of the 3rd klaxon of the day due to lightening overhead. At this moment Ahsan Khan and Julian Haworth of Willow Valley Golf were stood on the 17th tee at 8 under par.

Once back at the clubhouse they realised that 2 other pairings, Shipley's Nathan Stead & Captain and Penworthams Darren Hopwood & Captain had also scored 8 under for those 16 holes. Stead had reached 9 under for 18 holes and Hopwood had scored 8 under for 18 holes but the last 2 holes were cancelled out due to play being stopped by lightening.

On the countback Penwortham had the better back nine of the 3 pairings and go through to the final.

Commenting on the days events Willow Valley's Club Professional said, "It was a real stop start round for us, the Shipley pairing had posted their score early in the day and rain clouds had started to move in. We honestly thought it was out of reach considering the conditions when we teed off but kept plugging away.

"Ahsan really dug in and played some really steady golf, holing a putt for a nett eagle at the fifth hole par 5. That seemed to kick start us and we went on a birdie run reaching 5 under after 8 holes. Then the 2nd delay of the day saw us back in the clubhouse for a 1 hour suspension of play. We had a chat and realised that we needed to get it going early when we started again from the 9th tee.

"We played great from the restart but nothing really dropped, though it was a great thrill to be in contention and know the target. If the Klaxon hadn't sounded on the 16th who knows what might have happened, with the reachable 18th par 5 to come I really fancied our chances. Even though we missed out I have to feel for Nathan Stead and his Captain of Shipley Golf Club who scored 9 under and were beaten by a team who scored 8 under for their completed round."

HHDUGC versus Bradford Union at Bingley St Ives

The HHDUGC team travelled to Bingley St Ives Golf Club, to play the Bradford Union on the 11th July 2010.

The fairways were burnt and running hard, making it nearly impossible to hold any fairways, coupled with a very strong wind and the conditions were very difficult, however the greens were in good condition if a little bit slow.

Halifax/Huddersfield had successes in the opening two foursomes matches, with Aaron Schnacke and Ben Adamson playing really well to win 4&3. Iain Powell and Brad Tupman had to fight really hard to win their foursomes, winning the par 3 eighteenth hole to win their match.

The next three foursomes matches all went to the 18th hole all square, but unfortunately all the HHDUGC players missed the last green and with the pin in a very difficult position it was nearly impossible to get up and down. With a loss in the last foursomes match they went into lunch trailing 8 – 4.

In the afternoon singles HHDUGC won 3 out of the first 4 matches, with great wins for Adamson, Powell, and Jamie Bower. At this stage in the proceedings the match was finely balanced, with Halifax/Huddersfield definitely in with a chance of creating an upset.

Andy Shaw and Jared Ellison both halved their matches, while the in-form Dave Stafford won his match, unfortunately 2 wins out of the last 3 singles matches were required but were unable to win any leaving the match result 22 – 14 in the Bradford Unions favour.

Andy racks up number 19!

On Sunday 36 of the 'better' golfers at Bradley Hall took part in the Scratch Cup/Single Figure Golfer competition played over 36 holes on a warm but very windy day.

Play began at 8am for the first round and players were relieved to even reach the first fairway such was the strength of the wind and the early pace for the Scratch Cup was not surprisingly set by Andy Whitworth (+1) who walked off the 18th green with a gross 73 which proved impossible to better but brave attempts were made by Andy Hare (3), Steve Sandie (5) and Bruce Bain (8) all two shots back.

Needless to say the early pace setter for the Single Figure Golfer was Bruce Bain with his nett 67 and being the only competitor in the entire field to get under the course par of 70. In second place at the half way stage was Steve Sandie with a nett 70 and 72's from Peter Mason, Andy Hare, Andy Appleyard and Dan Dennett.

After lunch, the second round was played with the wind still blowing down the course but not to the extent of the morning. This did not however reduce the C.S.S. of 71 from the morning round.

In the Scratch Cup, Andy Whitworth completed his round with a gross 75 and had a nervous wait to see if his total gross of 148 could be beaten. Several put in a good effort, none less so than the Captain, David Whitaker (4) with a gross 74 and Clive McFadzean with his 71, the latter however being out of the race as in his morning round he took seventeen more strokes!

So the Scratch Cup went to Andy Whitworth for the 19th time since his first win in 1984.

The Single Figure Golfer title proved to be some consolation for the Captain as he claimed the trophy with his 36 hole nett score of 142 and reclaiming a Cup which he had previously won as a young man in 1981 and 1983.

Simon Rome, Steve Sandie and Bruce Bain all closed with nett scores of 144.

Professional snooker player Robert Armitage got the breaks with a different kind of white ball when he won the Presidents Prize at Outlane Golf Club with a 61 nett from Dennis Pearcey who was also in the Second division category.

With another three players on a 63 nett score it was a countback to determine the placings.

Garnett Tops Leaderboard Again

On a warm but very windy day, 153 golfers took part in the Summer Stableford at Bradley Hall Golf Club on Saturday.

With virtually no rain for the past few weeks, some of the usually green Bradley Hall fairways are showing signs of the drought with their biscuit colour and consequently many of the competitors found shots running into trouble particularly when playing down wind. However this did not detract from some excellent scores being returned.

Not for the first time this season, Andy Garnett finished at the head of the leader board with his total of 40 points, edging out Paul Firth and Kevin Gibson on back nine countbacks. Amongst the other challengers in Division 1, was 15 year old Liam Tarandij, playing in his first adult competition and certainly not being overawed in accumulating 36 stableford points.

In Division 2, another 40 points from Kevin Barker was sufficient to 'take the money' and in so doing returning him to the 'Tigers' he was however closely challenged by David Brown and Past Captain and Past President, Brian Worsman both with 39 points, a remarkable achievement bearing in mind the health issues Brian has had to overcome in recent years.

Multiple Holes in One!

Dewsbury District members Dave Wigfield and Garry Wilkinson are today both celebrating Holes in One on the same hole within an hour of each other whilst playing in the July Midweek Medal Competition at Dewsbury District Golf Club.

Wigfield holed out on the 9th hole only to be followed an hour later by Wilkinson.

Dave used a 7 iron and it is his second ace, his first coming many years ago on the 6th hole, also at Dewsbury. His playing partner, Michael Hampson managed a birdie 2 but lost the honour on the next tee!

Less than an hour later Garry holed out with his tee shot, this time using a 5 iron. It was also Garry's second ace his first also coming a few years ago on 2A at Dewsbury.

Club Manager Mick Thorpe said, "I don't know what the chances of 2 holes in one on the same hole within an hour of each other are, but it's QUITE REMARKABLE"

Trophy Supplier to the Yorkshire Matchplay

Sheffield Golf Trophies is the Yorkshire Matchplay Trophy Supplier.

Sheffield Golf Trophies have been announced as the company that will supply the trophies for the inaugural Yorkshire Matchplay Golf Championship.

Supplying golf clubs across the UK, with trophies and awards since 1995, the Sheffield based company have been commissioned to supply a magnificent Laurel Wreath Cup for the Individual Champion whilst the winners in the Pairs tournament will be competing for a splendid trophy known as the Wentworth Cup.

The Tenby Laurel Wreath Cup (left) stands at an impressive 18” in height and has a double-base with cleft like spiral bands. Valued at over £1,000 the hand-made silver trophy, crafted in Britain, is hand-chased with intricate detail and has a luxury mahogany plinth.

Meanwhile the substantial Wentworth Cup (below) is a large trophy of similar value with a contemporary design providing a highly polished silver-plated finish. The 15” masterpiece also sits upon a desirable mahogany base.

The trophies will be presented at the conclusion of the Grand Final at Alwoodley on September 16th 2010. The winners of the respective competitions will retain the trophy for one year. Winners will be given a golfing figure memento to keep, also provided by Sheffield Golf Trophies.

Tournament Director of the Yorkshire Matchplay and member of Dewsbury Golf Club, Edward Battye, said, “I am delighted that Sheffield Golf Trophies have come on board as our trophy and memento supplier. They have a fabulous reputation throughout the country as a supplier of awards and trophies to golf clubs and the fact that they are based in Yorkshire makes it even more special.”

Sheffield Golf Trophies (www.golftrophies.org.uk) have provided a point of contact for years to local craftsmen who produce the most prestigious sports awards in the world.

Time served engravers will turn any of the special awards into a personalised mark of achievement.

Owner of Sheffield Golf Trophies, Mike Beaumont, said, “We are very proud to be supplying the Yorkshire Matchplay with the trophies and mementos for this exciting new knockout competition. I have no doubt that the winners will be very pleased with the quality of the trophies and they will stand the test of time for future champions.”

He added, “ We already supply a number of golf club secretaries in Yorkshire with awards for their annual presentation evenings so hopefully this goes even further to strengthening our bond with golf in Yorkshire.”

The Yorkshire Matchplay has now reached the third round stage as competitors throughout the county battle it out to win their region (North, East, South and West) and gain a place in the Grand Final at The Alwoodley Golf Club in September.

New Yorkshire Golf Tour

The 2010 Yorkshire Golf Tour is a series of Individual Strokeplay competitions due to be held later this year.

Four events will be held at Sand Moor, Knaresborough, The KP Club and Moortown golf clubs. Entry-fees offer superb value for money and there will be various prizes up for grabs on the day.

Events are open to male golfers with a maximum handicap of 18 (higher handicaps may enter but must play off 18). There will be nett and gross prizes on the day plus nearest-the-pin and longest drive competitions. A two's sweep will also be run on the day.

The dates, venues and cost of entry for each competition can be seen here with the first event at Sand Moor just under a month away!

There will also be an order of merit where golfers collect points in each event culminating in the season-ending tournament at Moortown, a Ryder Cup venue, where golfers will go out in reverse order.

Greenkeeper Alan Claims Captain's Prize

On Saturday 3rd July, the Captain of Bradley Hall Golf Club, David Whitaker, held his 'Captains Day' in support of the Overgate Hospice, when 177 golfers took part.

Unlike two of the last three years, when heavy rain put a damper on proceedings, the day was blessed with almost continual sunshine and a moderate westerly breeze. As a result of the recent spell of dry weather, the fairways were hard and beginning to 'dry off' but the greens, due to the automatic watering system, were an immaculate lush green and a pleasure to play.

A most popular winner of the main prize, the 'Captains Cup' was the man most responsible for the Bradley Hall course, head greenkeeper, Alan Court (10). Since joining the club in the late nineties, Alan, along with his small team, has transformed the course into one of the best in the area and developed greens that must rival any in the County. Playing in mid morning, he completed the front nine in a 1 under gross score of 33 and although his back nine was not as impressive, nevertheless it resulted in his winning nett score of 65 and in so doing took his handicap back into single figures.

In second place and picking up the runners up prize, was David Stocks(9) with a nett 67, just edging out Dean Alexis (8) by a single shot.

Martin Cockcroft (3) claimed the best gross prize with his 72.

In Division 2 (19 to 28), past captain and chairman of the Board of Directors, Colin Hartley (21) finished two shots clear of Philip Dunn (19) with his nett 70.
Following the golf, over 100 members and guests enjoyed an excellent meal with dancing to a jazz band.

Chris Fires New Course Record at Hull

Chris Hanson posted his lowest ever competitive total when he fired a faultless seven-under par 63 at a breezy Hull Golf Club yesterday.

His seven-under par tally was not only good enough to take the £800 first prize in the Yorkshire PGA sanctioned Pro-Am, but it also marked a new course record for the Kirk Ella course.

It was win number nine of the season for the Woodsome Hall based golfer (pictured) and whilst he has shot 8-under the card twice before both of those came at par 72 courses.

A birdie on the opening par five set the tone and when he holed from ten and fifteen feet respectively on holes two and four the EuroPro tour player was up and running. He rued missed opportunities to get further under par at the fifth and sixth but bounced straight back on the next to get to four-under.

An impressive sand-save at the par three eight, where he came up short, kept the momentum going and allowed him to turn at five-under following an accurate approach to within a few feet of the pin on the testing ninth.

He narrowly missed a birdie on the tenth before being rewarded on the 11th where he attacked the pin and notched his sixth red number of the day. A slight misjudgement on his approach, followed by poor chip, at the par-five 12th cost him a chance of notching another birdie (although his long range effort lipped the hole) before another outside chance went begging on the short 13th.

Excellent par saves on the next three holes, twice from sand, kept his card ticking over before a good drive and iron shot to the 17th set up birdie number seven. And it could have been eight on the last when his 20 foot putt just slipped passed the edge of the hole. However, in the end it was sufficient to win by one stroke from Hornsea's Steve Uzzell.

Despite the eight previous professional victories during 2010 Hanson admitted he had not been 100% happy with his game recently, culminating in a disqualification at Pannal Golf Club during regional Open qualifying (where he signed for a wrong score) but over the past couple of weeks he has committed himself to enjoying his golf more and is now starting to see the benefit.

The win came just a day before his newly designed website launched - www.chrishansongolf.com - where golfers can keep tabs on his progress. They can also read his tweets on Twitter by following him at @Hansonprogolf

NEW COURSE RECORD AT CROW NEST PRO-AM

What a day! Last Friday saw the arrival of the Yorkshire PGA who ran the annual Pro Am at Crow Nest Park Golf Club and also a new professional course record of 64.

Professional golfers from across Yorkshire gathered in super weather at the Hove Edge course and they were not disappointed with the conditions, as almost everyone complimented the course and the greens as they finished their rounds.

The event attracted 24 teams of three amateurs and one professional, with a prize fund totalling just over £3,000 being up for grabs for the pro golfers. The professional who claimed the first prize and the new course record was Adrian Ambler from Moor Allerton with a sizzling 64.

The team event was won by a team made up of Professional Dave Mansell (Wakefield GC) and Crow Nest Park members Dave May, Danny Lax & Ben Adamson who shot a total of 15 under par for the 2 to score, 4 man team event.

Jimmy Pape, of the Yorkshire PGA stated that he thought the course had been presented in a super condition and that the members should feel privileged to play on a course which was maintained to such a high standard.

The event had been organised by club member Steve Yendley ,the Club`s current Rabbit Vice Captain. His company. Biosonics were the main sponsors, and he had also secured a number of other key sponsors to ensure that the event retained its status as one of the Yorkshire PGA`s flagship events. The other main sponsors were Datalex Services Ltd (incorp Solarflex), Go-Dutch Catering Co Ltd, Diamond Golf Studio & QED.

The days events were rounded off with a hot buffet during the evening and a tremendous singing performance by local duo Fifth Avenue.

If anyone is interested in organising a tremendous day for clients or staff by putting in a team for this event next year then please contact either Steve Yendley on Tel 07831692188 or Les Holmes on 07873267665.

IT`S A FAMILY AFFAIR

Last Saturday under a blazing sun saw Amanda Mowl host her Lady Captain's Day event at Crow Nest Park GC. Over 100 players took part in a number of competitions both on the day and during competitions the previous week.

After the competitors had finished their rounds they were provided either a bottle of beer or a pims. Both went down a treat given the sweltering conditions.

During the evening over 100 members and guests turned up to enjoy the evening entertainment of a Disco and a Barbecue which took place after the presentation. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Junior Lady Captains Day prize which was won by Madam Lady Captains son Harry Mowl. The biggest applause of the evening was given to this promising young golfer. The Lady Captain was extremely proud of his acheivement.

The Lady Captains Day Cup was won by Carol Hampson. The Past Lady Captains Competition was won by Pam Hollingworth.
