Leonard & Brown Come Out on Top at Bradley Hall

With 20 members being in Ireland on their annual golfing break, a reduced field of 140 golfers competed in the 'Memorial Stableford' competition at Bradley Hall Golf Club.

The competition is run to commemorate two members, Tom Park and Bill Garnett who were both tragically killed in a road accident on the M6 in the late 1980's.

In Division 1, for the 'Tom Park Trophy' scratch team member, Chris Mather, set the early target with his 36 points despite dropping shots on each of the four last holes. He was then overtaken by Gary Binks, a new member this season, having transferred from Lightcliffe. He had an identical score but with a better back nine.

Also challenging with the same 36 points were Mike Oldroyd, Mike Riley and Graham Brazier. However, playing later in the day, Mark Leonard with his 37 points took the title to claim his first prize since joining the club several years ago.

In Division 2 (Bill Garnett Trophy) another player to claim his first title was David Brown with the best return of the day of 38 points and just edging out Sean Lang and Simon Dean, coincidentally a playing partner of Mark Leonard.

The competition standard scratch was 71.

Low Laithes Land Seniors Title

The final play-off matches for this season in the Lawrence Batley Seniors League have been completed.

In the first semi-final, section A winners - Huddersfield, were defeated in a close match by the winners of section D - Low Laithes. With the match score at 4 - 4 and the winning margins also equal it was decided on a sudden death play-off with Low Laithes successful at the first extra hole.

The second semi-final between the winners of sections B and C was a clear win to Silkstone over opponents Saddleworth by a margin of 6 - 2.

In the final, the first Silkstone pair proved to be outstanding, recording a win by 5 and 3. The second game went to Low laithes by a margin of 4 and 2. The third and fourth games left the 14th tee with Low Laithes well ahead in both matches but a fight back by the Silkstone players saw both games go to the 18th hole. The recovery proved to be not quite enough with the third match going to Low Laithes, 2 up and a halved fourth game gave Low Laithes the team trophy, 5 - 3.

67's at Bradley Hall

The President of Bradley Hall Golf Club, Frank Buck (8), hosted his 'Presidents Day' on Saturday 21st August. This was the final event of the weeks competitions and was contested with a field of 167 male golfers.

Blessed with good weather throughout the week, Saturday was no exception with warm weather for most of the day and a course looking at its absolute best.

Setting early targets were Richard Pursell (13) with a nett 68 and Peter Hennessy (11) with 69 and these stood until well into the late afternoon until a clutch of 67's were returned including one from the President himself. These scores could not be bettered and the final placings were decided on score card 'count backs'.

Heading the field but also taking the major prize, the Presidents Salver, presented to the best nett score by a member over the age of 50, was Terry Jackson (7). This left Dean Alexis, also off 7 handicap, in the first place in Division 1 and followed by Mark Calligan (10).

In third place was 'Scratch Team' member, Chris Mather (4) with a gross 71, nett 67 which put him in line for the best gross prize, the 'Presidents Putter' but in that section he was matched by Andy Hare (3) and Andy Whitworth (+1). Again this prize was decided on a card count back and the trophy was won for not the first time by the evergreen Andy Whitworth who incidentally will be reach his half century next season and will no doubt be one of the favourites for the 'Salver'.

In Division 2, (16-28) the prizes went to Mike Bowyer (19), not surprisingly also with nett 67 and George Brown (22) with his 69. All in all it was a day of sixty sevens!

The week was rounded off with a dinner dance and prize presentations.

Early Morning Ace for Crowther

Dewsbury District Golf Club recorded it's seventh hole-in-one since May when Union regular, Ben Crowther, achieved an ace on his way to an impressive 4-under par, gross 67, in the latest Midweek Medal at the Pinnacle Club.

Whilst most people were still in bed Crowther, and playing partner Edward Battye, competed in the strokeplay competition setting off just after the crack of dawn.

The former Union Matchplay champion's round not only included the hole-in-one that came on the 166 yard par 3, where he used an 8-iron, but also an eagle two at the par 4 15th! It was Ben's second career ace, his first coming many years ago.

Club Manager Mick Thorpe said, "We have now had seven holes in one here at Dewsbury since May this year and unluckily... or perhaps luckily for Ben... there was hardly anyone in the clubhouse so early in the morning to help him celebrate!"

Dennett Wins Remembrance Cup

The weekly men's competition at Bradley Hall Golf Club which was played on Saturday 14th August was the 'Remembrance Cup' which attracted a field of 155.

Played in a brisk north easterly wind, with exceptionally fast greens, resulted in the standard scratch score rising to 71 and many of the holes which usually offer up 'birdie' chances, proved to be the most difficult and only 10 of the field recorded under par scores.

However, professional tennis coach, Dan Dennett, obviously found the conditions to his liking and his nett score of 65 gave him his first individual title since joining the club a few years ago. The score was two better than head greenkeeper, Alan Court, the recent winner of the Captains Cup and a further shot back were Trevor Moroney and Graham Clow who incidentally 'employed' his wife as his caddy for the day and gave him his best return for the past two seasons.

The lowest gross score of 71 was returned by Andy Whitworth.

Adamson Wins His first Major

Halifax, Huddersfield & Distrist Union player, Ben Adamson won his first Club Major title winning the oldest Club Competition, the Thompson Shield at Crow Nest Park.

The shield which has the House of Parliament Coat of Arms was presented to the club by the late Lord Thompson during the first year of the club.

Adamson shot a stunning gross score of 66 net 64 to claim his first big prize at Crow Nest. the win entitles him to play in the Clubs Champion of Champions annual tournament the Crow Nest Masters.

It was fitting that Lady Thompson, widow of the late Donald Thompson presented the shield to the winner in the presence of a large number of club members.

Cryer is Cockroft Champion

Woodsome Hall's Adam Cryer produced two sterling rounds of golf to hold off a host of formidable names to land the HHDUGC's premier strokeplay event, the PS Cockroft Trophy.

Nicely placed after a one-under par round of 70 in the morning, at a relatively benign Crosland Heath golf course, Cryer (pictured with Graham Sykes, President of Crosland Heath, and Geoff Ralph, President of the Halifax Huddersfield District Union of Golf Clubs) knew that he would have to improve in the afternoon if he was to lift the coveted silver trophy. Because, despite his sub-par round, there were several familiar names ahead or equal with him at the halfway stage.

Bradley Hall's Andrew Whitworth, a former winner, and last years matchplay champion, Aaron Schnacke (Huddersfield GC) lead the way with rounds of 68 whilst Iain Powell (Hebden Bridge GC) and Jamie Bower (Meltham GC) were poised to strike after scores of 69. Crow Nest Park's Ben Adamson matched Cryer's 70 as did Meltham's Roger Hunt.

However, the left-handed Cryer carded a 68 in the afternoon and as other players faded it soon became apparent that he would be crowned the champion with his impressive 138 tally. In the end it was good enough to win by three strokes from Powell who edged new North of England Youth Under 18 winner Bower out on a card count-back.

It was a double success for Cryer as he also won the Jubilee Trophy for the best score by a junior. Meanwhile Schnacke, who drifted to a 79 in the afternoon, had the consolation of winning the best morning round and Fixby's Andrew Wilford took the best afternoon score with a 71.

The leading 32 players qualified for the matchplay stage of the competition with the cut coming at 156.

Union Junior Team Need Two Big Wins

The Halifax, Huddersfield Junior Union team are in a strong position in the Yorkshire Inter District Union League but need two huge victories if they are to land the title.

They currently lie in second place but have a game in hand on most of their rivals and two on current leaders Sheffield, who they trail by four points.

Sheffield have played all their matches so the HHDUGC side must win both their remaining games to tie the South Yorkshire side on points. Although to top the table they must win both games by a total score of 47 points, a seemingly impossible task.

Their next game is away against Harrogate Union tomorrow at Harrogate Golf Club whilst they complete their season with a home encounter against Teesside at Bradley Hall next Tuesday.

Taylor Takes the Mexborough

Saturday 7th August saw the culmination of the 78th 'Open Week' at Bradley Hall Golf Club with the staging of the 36 hole 'Lord Mexborough Cup'.

Ninety three golfers from 11 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland took part in the event which was played under heavy clouds with frequent rain showers throughout the day. But this did not detract from the excellent course condition provided by head greenkeeper, Alan Court and his staff. Numerous compliments were received, in particular regarding the condition of the putting surfaces, which are surely comparable to any in the county.

The first round opened at 7am with the Huddersfield duo of Andy Shaw and Richard Broadley alongside home player, Andy Appleyard and it was expected that at least one of the trio would set a challenging target but this proved not to be the case and it was left to home player, Paul Buckley (8) with his nett score of 66 to head the pack.

This was matched by another home member and winner of the event in 2008, Mark Bailey (8), to equal the score but with an inferior back nine score which left him in second place.

By the end of the first round, the two were closely followed by home players Mick Shea (7), Josh Bailes (6) Andy Hare (3) and David Arrowsmith (7) of Todmorden and leaving them very much as favourites to take the title.

In the afternoons second round, Chris Doyle (7) also returned a nett 66 but his 75 in the morning virtually ruled him out of the competition as did poor returns from the early leaders, Paul Buckley (nett 74), Mark Bailey (nett 78), Mick Shea (net t79), Josh Bailes (nett 75), Andy Hare (nett 73) and David Arrowsmith (nett 73).

This then opened the door for other competitors and Dean Alexis (7) posted a 69 to go with his mornings 70 and to move into the overall lead but was soon overtaken by Paul Taylor (3) with a 67 and a 36 hole score of 138 which proved impossible to beat and to be the only two scores under the course par of 70.

This was the third time that the event has been won by Paul Taylor, a member of Bradley Hall for many years since joining in the dim and distant past as a junior, a fact that was not forgotten in his acceptance speech.

Receiving the prize as runner up was Dean Alexis who this season has been very much a 'nearly' man with a number of close challenges in various competitions.

The prize for the best gross score over 36 holes was achieved by David Stafford (1), one of only four representatives from near neighbours, West End with his gross score of 144.

Prizes were also awarded to the best nett scores in the first round, Paul Buckley (66), the second round, Chris Doyle (66) and the best gross scores by Andy Whitworth (71) in the morning and Andy Shaw (72) in the afternoon.

Crow Nest Hosts Halifax & Bradford Past Captains match

Crow Nest Park Golf Club held its first Past captains Match this week. 40 Past Captains from both the Halifax & Bradford Golf Unions gathered at the Hove Edge Course. It was the first time that Crow Nest had been asked to host this keenly fought match.

Many of the players had not previously played on this course but the recent national & worldwide accolades had been acknowledged. The very complimentary comments made by the two team Captains and the players all confirmed the growing reputation of what is fast becoming the jewel in Brighouse`s sporting crown.

The match finished a very creditable draw and 42 past captains stayed behind at the clubhouse and enjoyed a super two course meal of Lamb Henry and apple Crumble.

Sensational Bower is North of England Youth Under 18 Champ

The 2010 North of England Open Amateur Youth Golf Championship was held at Middlesbrough Golf Club this week and Meltham's Jamie Bower was in sensational form just missing out on an unprecedented double but still claimed the Under 18's crown.

The prestigious Championship, now in it's 36th year, is recognised by all the golf Unions and the R & A. 132 entrants played for the MacGill Challenge Trophy where entrants must be under 23 years of age on the first day of the 72-hole championship. Meanwhile the Fairweather Salver is awarded to the leading competitor who is aged under 18 years and returns the best score over the 72 holes. Both trophies can be won by a player who is under 18 but entries are limited and balloted to golfers with a handicap of 4 or less.

Meltham's Bower, a Yorkshire Boys player, shot magnificent rounds of 67 & 69 (4 under par) in the Tuesday and Wednesday qualifying rounds to easily make the cut. In fact his put Jamie in tied second place on 136 along with K. Gray (Slaley Hall) and just 1 stroke behind the leader, J Loughrey from Wrag Barn.

In round three, played on Thursday morning, Jamie shot an over par round of 73 but responded magnificently in the afternoon during round 4 to post a superb 4-under par 66. This put Jamie in tied first place with a score of 275, 5 under par, along with 4 other competitors!

At this stage 17-year-old Jamie knew he had won the under 18's Fairweather Salver by 6 shots with his 275, the lowest ever winning score over 72 holes for this competition.

The Captain of Middlesbrough Golf Club, Mr Richard McLaughlan, announced to the waiting spectators that a sudden death play off between the five joint leaders would decide the winner and would be played over holes 1 and 18 continuously until a winner is decided. He said it would commence in five minutes. However, the Captain was then called into the scorers cabin after which he re-appeared to announce that two players were disqualified due to wrongly marked cards. He said that the play off between the remaining three players would start in approx 5 minutes.... what drama !!!

Jamie, a scratch player, was one of those three to contest the play-off and immediately birdied the first play-off hole. He was joined by Ian Winstanley (+4hcp) from Formby Golf Club who also birdied the 323 yard opening hole. Meanwhile the 3rd player only parred the hole and was eliminated.

Both remaining players parred the 373 yard 18th so it was down the first again! Jamie pulled his tee shot into trees on the left whilst Ian hit a magnificent shot onto the green and made birdie to Jamie's bogey to win the title.

Jamie had twice driven the green at the first and in playing the hole six times had four birdies, one par and a five. Jamie came so close to being the first to win both trophies at the same time.

His grandfather Tony said afterwards, "He is not at all disappointed. Jamie is the North of England under 18 Youths Champion, and has probably reduced his handicap to plus 1."

Union do demolition job on York

The Halifax Huddersfield and District Union of Golf Clubs entertained the York Union at Dewsbury District Golf Club on Sunday. The course was in excellent condition but despite being dry the sky was overcast and there was a slight breeze.

The first foursomes pairing of Aaron Schnacke & Ben Adamson (pictured) were soon up against it, being 4 holes down after 5 holes, but they fought back and with a birdie on the 17th they drew level. Schnacke then hit an 8 iron to 12 feet on the last but unfortunately Adamson could not convert the putt and the game was halved.

Brad Tupman & Iain Powell struggled throughout their game but managed to stay level with their opponents up to the 17th hole, where an errant tee shot by Powell cost them the hole, they halved the last hole to lose the game by 1 hole.

James Skirrow, who has represented the Leeds Union on numerous occasions, was making his debut for the Halifax/Huddersfield team. He partnered Graham McLean with the standard of golf a little bit up and down, but the experience showed in the end, with a birdie 3 on the 15th hole putting the home lads 2 up. They lost the 16th but a par on 17 was good enough to win the hole and the game 2&1.

Tom Goodair & Adam Cryer soon got in control of their match, despite Goodair having two shanks, and the pairing got to a 4 hole lead. Birdies by the York pairing on the 14th & 15th cut their lead to just two, but a par 3 on the 16th was good enough to win the hole and the game 3&2.

Dave Stafford & Jared Ellison were soon down in their game, going 4 down at one stage, but a gradual fightback got them back into the game. With a birdie on the 15th hole they closed the gap to just 1 hole but the York pairing held on to halve all the remaining holes and win the game by 1 hole.

Mark Hepworth & Ben Crowther were our final pairing, and with both players from the home club, they plotted their way around the course going ahead on the 9th hole then winning the 12th hole to go 2 up. Birdies at 14 and 15 sealed a 4 & 3 victory.

After the foursomes games Halifax/Huddersfield lead 7–5.

The afternoon singles started with Union Matchplay Champion Schnacke playing county player Martin Brown from Pike Hills. The York man started strongly and by the 12th hole was 4 up, but Aaron fought back, and a birdie on the 17th brought him level. They shared the 18th hole in par 3’s for a well earned point for Halifax/Huddersfield.

Goodair was a little out of sorts and lost his game 3 & 2. Adamson fought all the way, and level playing the last hole, hit his tee shot a little bit too well, ending up on the bank at the back of the green. From there he was unable to get up and down to save par and the game.

Powell was 3 down after 9 holes but rallied winning the 15th hole to get back to all square, both players pared their way in to give Halifax/Huddersfield another valuable point.

Skirrow on his debut had three 2’s in his match, a birdie 2 on the 9th, an eagle 2 on the 15th, and then walked onto the 18th tee 1 up. His tee shot pitched past the pin, spun back nearly going in the hole to finish 12 inches from the hole for his third two of the game and a 2 hole win.

McLean battled all the way through his game, getting to 3 up at one stage, but his opponent grinded his way back into the game. McLean made a brilliant up and down on 16 to stay 1 up, then they halved the 17th in par and a solid par 3 on 18 gained Halifax/Huddersfield two more points.

Homeboy Hepworth was promoted up the order and did not disappoint. In a clinical golfing display he disposed of his opponent 6 & 5 as the match began to drift the Halifax/Huddersfield way.

Tupman was not his usual self and uncharacteristically bogied the 17th hole to hand his opponent the game. Ellison fought back from a few early setbacks in his game, he was 2 down after 8 holes, but won the 9th and by the 17th tee he was 1 up. Both players hit the 18th green but unfortunately Jared three-putted and handed his opponent the hole for a halved match. Despite that result it was still one step nearer the match for Halifax/Huddersfield.

Cryer was back to his best, as the 5 foot plus powerhouse played a solid round of golf to win his match 3 & 2. A memorable up and down on the 9th hole helped his cause to a fantastic job well done.

Stafford was always in control of his game, getting an early lead 3 up after 7 holes. Dave played solid golf eventually winning his game to win the match for Halifax/Huddersfield. Crowther finished off the demolition of the York team, all square playing the 15th Ben won the next 3 holes to win his game 3&1.

At the after match meal three of the Halifax/Huddersfield team received their colours for making six appearances; Ben Adamson (Crow Nest Park), Tom Goodair & Adam Cryer (Woodsome Hall). These players are all products of the Halifax/Huddersfield coaching scheme and the future bodes well for Halifax/Huddersfield.

Broadley & Shaw Back with a Bang

Saturday saw the opening event of the 78th 'Open Week' at Bradley Hall Golf Club with the 'Herbert Buckley Trophy' a men's better ball competition.

The threatening clouds and a cold westerly wind blowing down the course was a distinct change from the recent spell of glorious sunshine and high temperatures.

This however did not detract from some excellent scores being returned with no less than 49 pairs out of the field of 192 bettering the standard scratch score of 70.

Starting first at 7am was the pairing of former Bradley Hall members, now based at the Huddersfield club, Richard Broadley (+2) and Andrew Shaw (scratch). Although Richard was suffering badly from an upset stomach, he managed to complete the round, albeit in considerable pain and each featured nine times on their card, returning a nett score of 61 even with a gross 4, nett 5 on the stroke eighteen 12th hole! In total Andy recorded 3 gross birdies and Richard 5 plus 1 eagle.

Needless to say their remarkable round could not be bettered but coming close, both with nett 63's, were Bradley Hall members, Neil Crowther (6) and Rod Goldstein (16) and father and son pairing Michael Appleyard (6) and Andrew (5).

The week continues with the Mixed Betterball on Sunday 1 August, the Seniors Open on Tuesday 3rd, the Junior Open on Wednesday 4th, the Ladies Open on Thursday 5th and completing the week, the men's individual 'Lord Mexbrough Cup' over 36 holes.
