FATHER AND SON WIN SECOND DIVISION
The Yellow Marker Better Ball Competition at Outlane Golf Club saw the father and son combination of Geoff and Gavin Hirst come home with an impressive 60 nett score to win the second division section.
Gary Gough and Tony Stead were more than satisfied with their 62 nett until they learned of the better score and with last weeks winners Kevin Slater and Maurice Wilson matching their previous weeks winning score of 63 nett it needed something special to take the prize.
The First division had low handicapper John Lawton combining with mid handicapper Brian Moroney and it worked a treat for them as they posted a 61 nett score to pip Darren Cooper and Steve Beeby with their 62 nett.
A further shot back was Steve Howlett and Ken Robinson with a 63 nett who have experienced a lot of success this season with their combination of a low and mid handicap pairing.
Division 1:
John Lawton / Brian Moroney = 61 nett
Darren Cooper / Steve Beeby = 62 nett
Steve Howlett / Ken Robinson = 63 nett
Division 2:
Geoff Hirst / Gavin Hirst = 60 nett
Gary Gough / Tony Stead = 62 nett

PHOTO FINISH FOR TONY AND PAUL
The Pro's fourball competition saw photographer Tony O'Brien come out on top with his partner Paul Reynolds to snap the Division 1 prize from Paul O'Hara and Paul Phillips with a last hole Stableford score.
Third place went to Brian Cassidy and green-keeper John Firth who had a count back winning score to register their place in the prizes.
The second division saw a remarkable three way tie and whilst Kevin Slater and Maurice Wilson easily won the back nine countback the second place went to yet another countback with a back six and then a back three to finally sort the placings out.
The second division win didn't look likely when they had only sixteen points on the front nine but a remarkable twenty seven points was amassed with Kevin scoring on eight holes and then Maurice having a gross four to register 4 points as he had 2 shots on the stroke 2 hole.

National Alliance Championship at Halifax G.C.
This year the National Alliance Championship has moved north from the Midlands, where it has been held for the previous 4 years, to be hosted by the Halifax Huddersfield Alliance at Halifax Golf Club.
The championship trophy is contested by teams of 5 better balls with the best 4 scores to count. There is also an individual competition for the professionals with a prize fund of £1,000 and prizes for the best pairs not in the team prizes.
The competition was played from the new Blue tees at Ogden which gives added interest to the start as the carry from in front of the clubhouse to the fairway is 200 yards and in front of a much larger audience than usual.
For most of the day Halifax-Huddersfield were lying in second place on countback from East Lancs with 154 points but the last two teams out claimed the honours. The championship was won by Derbyshire 2 with 160 points from Nottinghamshire 2 who were 1 point behind on 159. A 40 point average over the new layout by players who had not seen the course before was a fine performance.
The top professional honour was shared by Manchester’s Dave Smith (Swindon Park) and Nottinghamshire’s Chris Hall (Rushcliffe) on 38 points. Joint third were K. Taylor and L. Woodward, both playing for team champions Derbyshire 2, with 36 points. Best of the local professionals were Gareth Evans (Crow Nest Park), 34, Dave Delaney (Halifax), 33, and Alliance President Rob Booth (Bradley Hall), 33.
Mike Dempsey and Pete Newey of Fixby claimed the best pair prize with 43 points with other best pairs from the Halifax Huddersfield Alliance being D. Delaney / T. Gerrard (Halifax),41, G. Evans / D. May (Crow Nest Park), 40, C.McFadzean / P. Airey, 41.
Next year this event will be held at Crosland Heath Golf Club.

Whitworth is Halifax Champion Golfer
The Halifax Championships, which are hosted in rotation between the three 18 hole Halifax Golf Clubs, Halifax, Bradley Hall and West End, were this year held at Bradley Hall.
There was an excellent field both in terms of numbers and especially in quality, with exactly half the competitors having single figure handicaps and of those were a large proportion of the Union team players over the last few years.
The competition was the 'brainchild' of a Bradley Hall stalwart of many years, Geoffrey Pitchforth, and it is open to members of the Halifax clubs and their surrounding neighbours from Todmorden to Crow Nest and Queensbury to the Huddersfield boundary. It has been organised on an annual basis for around 50 years. The 'Halifax Champion' is the player with the best gross score on the day and there are also prizes for the best nett scores.
The day began at 7.30am in damp and misty conditions and the last group of the 84 competitors walked off the under clear blue skies on a beautiful summery evening.
Two of the early starters, David Stafford (1) and Ian Marsland (2), both of West End, set the pace with gross scores of 71, separated only by the par 3 of Ian as opposed to the bogey 4 of David on the final hole. Some came close, notably other West End members, Charles Burke (9)
Chris Ingham (2), Paul Gott(2) all with 73's along with the same score by Ben Adamson (scr) of Crow Nest.
It appeared that perhaps the winner was to come from West End but in the penultimate group of three members of the Bradley Hall scratch team, Club Captain David Whitaker (4), Martin Cockcroft (3) and probably the best amateur golfer in the area over the past 25 years, Andrew Whitworth (scr), the latter of whom matched the gross scores with his 71 and taking the trophy for the ninth time on the strength of his better back nine score.
In the competition for the best nett scores, there was a magnificent nett 64 from Charles Burke (9) of West End which proved to be 4 shots better than the second place of Mark Bailey (7) and 5 better than of third placed Josh Fairburn (6), both of Bradley Hall.
The final prize for the nearest to the pin on the last hole was won by Andy Bryan (8) who put his tee shot to within 10 feet and pick up a £50 voucher.
All in all it was a very successful day and next year the competition will be held at West End when it is hoped that another 'class' field will compete for the title.

Bad day for Hanson

The event (and £1000) was won by Tim Dykes from Wrexham G C with 68.

RABBITS CAPTAIN COMES GOOD AFTER A BAD START
Maxted's (pictured) 65 nett total would have been more remarkable if he had scored pars on the first (par four) and last hole (par five) but he was still 2 shots clear of second place Ian Charles and a further shot back was David Crowther.
The first division saw Stuart Hodgson edging a count back from David Knapton with 66 nett and junior player Bryn Jenkinson a shot further back with a 67 nett.
OCTOBER MEDAL
Division 1:
Stuart Hodgson 79 -(13) = 66 nett
David Knapton 76 - (10) = 66 nett
Bryn Jenkinson 75 - (8 ) = 67 nett
Division 2:
Ian Maxted 91 -(26) = 65 nett
Ian Charles 84 -(17) = 67 nett
David Crowther 92 - (24) = 68 nett
The Strokeplay Championship 2010 has come to a very exciting conclusion after the October Medal results.
There was a tie for first place between Gary Atkins and Jarrad Hazelden and the rules of the competition was that upon a tie the 11th best score would be the deciding factor (there is a possible 15 rounds of medals and major competitions and players best 10 scores count for the title).
This meant Jarrad Hazelden was the winner with a 11th round score of 73 to pip the unfortunate Gary Atkins 75.
Strokeplay Championship Results (The 10 best rounds in total taken from a maximum of 15 rounds of golf):
Jarrad Hazelden = 697
Gary Atkins = 697
John Lawton = 702
Michael Thomas = 704
David Knapton = 704
Paul Anderson = 704

ALAN FITS THE BILL WITH VERY FEW PUTTS
Alan Rushworth putted very well to win the prestigious William Garside Putter in the latest Outlane Competition.
He played a round which would have done justice to the late Outlane professional Bill Garside who presented a beautiful decorative putter (not to be used in play) to the golf club in recognition of his services to the club which lasted 34 years.
The putter prize came from the idea of Bill ( known as an excellent teacher of golf) giving a lesson to a member who said he could never get over the ravine no matter what club he used and Bill promptly took him to the 17th hole (ravine) and got over with his putter to leave the member in awe.
William Garside Putter Result:
Alan Rushworth 82 - (17) = 65 nett
Simon McKenzie 77 - (11 ) = 66 nett
Gary Atkin 77 - (11 ) = 66 nett
Michael Thomas 83 - (16) = 67 nett
Paul Savage 80 - (12 ) = 68 nett
