Gordon & Granville get their birdies for Christmas

The annual Outlane Turkey Trot saw some good scores from the fourball better ball partnerships and with 15 pound turkeys on offer for the Christmas dinners the number 15 proved to be decisive for Gordon Drysdale and Granville Jenkinson.

Their 60 nett was helped by the formers 3 for 2 on the 15th par 4 hole which gave them their winning score. In fact it was Gordons play on the back nine (7 times on the card ) which enabled him and Granville to register 27 shots to add to their 33 shots on the front nine to give them the 'birdy' prize.

Paul Reynolds and Chris Twigg equalled their score but couldn't match the back nine with Ken Robinson and Mick Howlett a further shot back. This was a happy Christmas present for the Robinson household as Ken had already won the Whisky frolic with Micks son Steve.

John Follows and Kevin McGraths early 61 nett set the standard with Rob Holroyd and Stuart Hodgson following them in with another 61 nett which normally gets better than fifth position!

Turkey Trot Results
Gordon Drysdale / Granville Jenkinson = 60 nett
Paul Reynolds / Chris Twigg = 60 nett
Ken Robinson / Mick Howlett = 61 nett
John Follows / Kevin McGrath = 61 nett
Rob Holroyd / Stuart Hodgson = 61 nett

Yorkshire Matchplay Returns for 2011

The Yorkshire Matchplay Golf Championship is back and in 2011 it promises to be bigger and better!

The event for amateur golfers in Yorkshire launched last year and was an overwhelming success. It attracted over 300 golfers from nearly one hundred different courses during its first year and received much acclaim from club members across the county. Indeed the tournament exceeded expectations and has now proved to be a launch pad for a much larger competition throughout the North of England next year.

Replicating the Yorkshire event across five other counties the new Northern Matchplay Golf Championship will bring the winners of Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire and Northumberland together for a spectacular two-day grand final at The Alwoodley Golf Club. Finalists will compete at the famous Leeds course in late-September over 72 holes to determine the overall champions of the North.

In 2011 the Yorkshire section will operate on a similar basis to last time. It will once again comprise of an Individual and Betterball Pairs competition split into four regions (North, East, South & West). The first round will be played over 36 holes on a ‘home & away’ basis to ensure that each Individual or Pair gets play a golf course other than their home club. A random draw for home advantage will be made in subsequent rounds.

The venue for the Yorkshire final in 2011 will be the superb Pannal Golf Club, an Open Qualifying course near Harrogate. The winners of each of the four regions will go there on Wednesday 14th September with both the Individual and Pairs champions on the day progressing to the two-day climax at Alwoodley later in the month.

The tournament’s founder Edward Battye said, “The response and feedback from the inaugural competition made it an easy decision to expand the event across more counties. I’m really delighted to have secured six top-class courses as regional final venues including the beautiful Pannal Golf Club for the Yorkshire final.”

Huddersfield-based Battye (pictured left) added, “Whoever wins on the day at Pannal can expect one of the best golfing experiences they are ever likely to have at Alwoodley.”

Entry-fees have remained the same as 2010 at just £15 per person for the Singles competition and £25 per pair for the Betterball event. Golfers can enter online now at www.yorkshirematchplay.com

Elland Alliance Results

Chris Hanson and Toby Garrett (1) of Woodsome Hall / Crosland Heath won the high scoring Pro-Am section with 42 points from Darren Arber and Joe Stott (11) of West End on 41.

Mark Campbell (7) and Craig Hellewell (11) of Crow Nest Park won the Am-Am with 39 points from Mick Wood (17) and Terry Meehan (18) of Outlane on 38.

A combination of an over-subscribed entry, the weather, and a no-show requiring finding a marker resulted in the last few starters abandoning play as night fell. However, the best scores in the Am-Am were returned by players who finished in the dark, really dark.

Officials and ground staff at Outlane had made great efforts to prepare the course, particularly in clearing most of the fallen leaves.

The fast greens were a little bumpy early in the day as footprints were slow to recover in the near freezing conditions, but this improved as the sun warmed up the surfaces. Play was slowed early in the day by poor visibility into the rising sun and clearing of lines on the greens of leaves and ice.

Chris and Toby, playing together for the first time in a few years, gelled together to return a fine 42 points with 4 birdies to Chris and one to Toby, the extra point coming from a net birdie by Toby on the index 1 hole. Runners-up Darren and Joe also gelled well with a gross birdie each and 4 net birdies to Joe for 42 points.

In the Am-Am section the best score for a long time was 36 points with in all 5 pairs returning this score. However, long after the sun set, Mark and Craig came in with 39 points including a net eagle and 3 net birdies. The runners-up were the very last in and Mick and Terry’s 38 points was remarkable as they did not drop a point on any of the last 6 holes.

The next even is the Christmas Dinner meeting at Hebden Bridge G.C. on Tuesday, 30th November. With a limit of about 30 pairs due to the limited hours of daylight, entries may have to be rationed.

KEN and STEVE in GOOD SPIRITS after their 58 nett round!!!

The WHISKY FROLIC at Outlane Golf Club saw Ken Robinson and Steve Howlett produce shot after shot to birdie several holes in the Betterball competition over a shortened course, played from the yellow markers.

With bottles of Whisky for prizes to the first 5 places there was a good turnout of partnerships and anyone who thought they had a good score in the lower 60's were surprised that they didn't figure in the pre-Christmas gift prize.

Several good scores were shared out in both early and late tee off times so nobody had an advantage of the conditions.

Second place went to Steve Marshall and Leo Scott who were late starters and their 60 nett was just good enough to pip very early starters Geoff and Gavin Hirst ( 61nett ) who had a shot to spare over another early start combination of Granville Jenkinson and Gordon Drysdale (62 nett).

Steve Cooper and David Petts also carded a 62 nett and were mid- morning players. The course was in excellent condition for this time of the year and hopefully the next big competition, the Turkey Trot, which is played on both Saturday and Sunday will experience the same conditions for this popular pre- Christmas event.

WHISKY FROLIC RESULTS
Ken Robinson / Steve Howlett = 58 nett
Steve Marshall / Leo Scott = 60 nett
Geoff Hirst / Gavin Hirst = 61 nett
Granville Jenkinson / Gordon Drysdale = 62 nett
Steve Cooper / David Petts = 62 nett

Hanson makes cut in Spain but falters on final day

Despite the early boost of a birdie at the 2nd hole Chris Hanson could only add a string of pars and half a dozen bogeys for a final round of 77 Condado Open in Spain last week.

That left him tied for 21st place on +5 after he had easily made the cut in 12th position after two rounds scoring a level par total of 144 (73+71). Joint overnight leader Frenchman Romain Wattell scorched to the turn in 4 under and held his round together to finish with a 69 (-3) and final total of 9 under to win by 4 shots.

Hanson was in Spain to put himself into the competitive arena and gain experience ahead of European Tour 2nd Qualifying Stage in two weeks time.

Hanson hit by high winds

Chris Hanson, playing in a Hi5 Pro Tour in Spain, teed-off at 09:30am from the first tee this morning with English Amateur Chris Lloyd.

He was +2 and lying fourth, 3 behind Lloyd and fellow amateur Ryan Newman, when play was suspended.

A spokesperson of the tour said, "Round one of the 50,000 Euro Hi5 Pro Tour Fall series had to be suspended due to a severe weather system that has swept through Spain with its high winds. Officials were constantly monitoring the situation and the first stoppage of play occurred at 12:55 today. Play resumed briefly but the weather further deteriorated and a complete suspension of round one’s play was announced at 15:00. Play will resume tomorrow morning for all players at 8:00 a.m."

Hanson’s first nine holes contained double bogeys at the 1st and 8th, a bogey at the 5th, birdie at the par 3 3rd and the bonus of an eagle at the par 5 9th before play was suspended.

SIX YEARS OLD JACK GETS HOLE IN ONE AT JUNIOR CLINIC!!

The Saturday morning Junior Clinic at Outlane Golf Club saw 6-year-old Jack Mazurke get what some golfers never achieve in their careers - A HOLE IN ONE !

The clinic starts with a warm up session in the nets with professional David Champion and then the juniors hit a number of balls on the practice ground before finally playing 3 holes before the club golfers start coming in.

The 3 holes comprise of a relatively easy starting practice hole which is on the practice ground and then play the 17th from the ladies tee followed by the 18th again from the ladies tee.

Whilst their first hole isn't a regular hole it was nevertheless a moment for Jack to remember and his 7 iron shot certainly had him celebrating around the club. Junior organiser Bob Hazelden said "Our junior clinic is an ideal opportunity for anyone wanting just to try the game of golf and whilst we don't insist on membership anyone can come and take part. I was there when Jack got his hole in one and the sight of him telling everyone in the vicinity was a joy to watch."

The sessions start at 8.30 and there is a small cost of £5 which includes a treat. The sessions are every Saturday morning for juniors aged from 4 years old upwards and for any other information please contact professional David Chapman.

Dewsbury Double Up in Alliance

The home club took the honours in both the Pro-Am and Am-Am categories in Tuesday’s winter alliance at Dewsbury District G.C.

Nigel Hirst partnered by Dewsbury Captain Paul Jackson (14) (pictured left) came in with 43 points to just pip long time leader in the clubhouse, Chris Hanson partnered by Dewsbury member Edward Battye (scr) on 42 points. They were closely followed by Rob Stansfield and Luke Dickinson (4) of Crosland Heath on 41 points.

The Am-Am section was even closer with three pairs on 42 points, the tie being resolved on back nine countback. Winners were Adam Crum (2) and Jimmy Main (15) (pictured right) of Dewsbury from Chris Mowl (1) and Nick Day (6) of Castlefields followed by Jarrad Hazelden (5) and John Lawton (6) of Outlane.

The course was in fine condition, the ground staff having been busy clearing leaves from the greens, a real problem on a windy autumn day. The 2 to 3 club breeze was particularly noticeable at the top of the course but the scoring was good despite the wind. The meal provided by Dewsbury was very well received by the payers.

Nigel Hirst had 5 birdies and Chris Hanson had 4. In the amateurs Adam Crum had 4 gross birdies, as did Chris Mowl and Andy Cryer. 4 pointers were scored by J.Hazelden (5th), M.O’Hara (3rd) and two by P.Wharton (8th and 10th).

DANS THE MAN AS WINNERS FINISH 11 UNDER PAR !!!!

The Pro's Voucher Better Ball, played off the yellow markers, was a birdie blitz for Dan Schofield and Jarrad Hazelden as they produced a blistering 60 nett to win the first division prize in a perfect round of no dropped shots.

It was the former who kept improving their score with his shot when the latter had already got the par which enabled Dan to go for it.

This he did with monotonous regularity and his contribution of being on the card for 12 holes helped their outward 30 nett and matched by another 30 nett on the inward nine to win by 2 shots from Kevin Pendlebury and Gary Atkin.

Andy McLaughlin and Patrick O'Flynn were a further shot adrift.

The second division was a much tighter result with Paul Kay and Mark Uttley having a better back nine score from Tom Heywood and Steve Brearey with their 61 nett and Alan Henderson partnering Ian Charles to a 62 nett.

Whilst they didn't get in the prizes Michael Thomas (14 years old) and Joe Blackwell ( 13 years old ) two of the promising Outlane juniors teamed up to register a first partnership score of 64 nett which suggests they are two to watch out for.
