The 'John Hamer Rosebowl' a men's strokeplay competition, was held at Bradley Hall on Saturday 25 June.
The early starters had to contend with light but driving rain and by lunchtime, the best score returned was a nett 71 by the first off, Richard Leeming (6) and shortly afterwards by Richard Pursell (11).
However, as the day progressed, although the winds eased only slightly, the big difference was clear skies and no rain and so the leaderboard began to change dramatically with the two early pacesetters being pushed back to 14th and 15th.
The outstanding scoring came from a group of 3 golfers, Andy Hanson (18), Mick Shea (7) and Owen Hall (18) the first with a nett 67 and the other two with a shot back. With the exception of Mick Shea, who rarely misses a competition, the other two have only played a handfull of rounds this season, for varying reasons and no doubt encouraged each other.
With only 1 group left to complete their rounds, Andy Hanson had a one shot lead over the field but Steve Sandie (5), the oldest category 1 golfer at the Club and a member of the Scratch Team shot the lowest gross of 72 to also give him a nett 67. On the countback however, Andy Hanson had the better back nine and so claimed his first major trophy.
