Below is a report from club manager Mick Thorpe on some of the recent hole-in-ones at Dewsbury District Golf Club.
Wednesday 13th July: Kevins Second Ace on the 9th
Today was the Seniors Summer Competition here at DDGC. It seems Hole In Ones are fairly common here over the past couple of years. There have been at least TEN in that time! Today Kevin Howley, who celebrates his birthday tomorrow the 14th July, holed in one on the Ninth hole for the second time in six months. He knew the format and casually provided another bottle of whisky for the many seniors around in the clubhouse.
Kevin used his 7 iron on the 132 yard hole. His day was to get even better as he and his team also picked up a prize in the competition.
Tuesday 26th July: ACE junior at DDGC
Connor Smith today (26th July 2011) managed to do what millions of golfers never achieve in their lifetime, that is he had a Hole In One and all at the tender age of just thirteen.
He achieved his ACE on the 132 yard ninth at Dewsbury District G.C. using just a pitching wedge and this just having joined the club in March this year. Our Professional Nigel Hirst points out this took place immediately after a Junior Coaching Clinic earlier in the day which Connor attended.
Well done Connor and good luck in what is obviously a very promising golfing future.
Thursday 28th July: Yet another hole in one
This time for Mark Haigh whilst playing in the Midweek Medal. Mark achieved his ace on the Ninth here at DDGC using a 9 iron on the 132 yard hole. It was his first ever after many years of trying and the smile on his face when he entered the clubhouse showed how much it meant to him. What was also impressive was that he managed to maintain his composure and complete his round in a gross 73 off 10 handicap which should be in the frame at the end of play. As this is written the competition is still underway so we won't know until later how well he has done. Good Luck in the competition and congratulations on your Hole In One.
1st August 2011 - Yorkshire Day
Long standing Member achieves lifelong ambition.
David Batty, a member at DDGC for almost 40 years yesterday had his first ever Hole In One on the 167 yard 12th Hole, at Hickelton G.C. in a Seniors Open Day. He scored 5 points on the hole as he had a shot as well, a net -1.
David has been playing golf for 60 years and started to think he may never get a hole in one, but he never gave up trying. He is often just coming off the course as many other people are just waking up, he loves early morning "millionaires golf"
David used to be a Flight engineer in the RAF based in Borneo and when he was de mobbed he moved to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific who had just 3 planes in those days he recollects and two of those were Dakota's. He eventually became a pilot for Cathay flying in and out of Hong Kong.
Well done David your next hole in one may just be around the corner?
