Home joy for Crosland Heath duo

Alliance Winners
It was a relief to find the snow had cleared and the mist lifted just before the start of what turned out to be a generally fine and still day for the latest HHDGA Winter Alliance event at Crosland Heath Golf Club yesterday.

Performance of the day must go to Adam Walker (Longley Park) playing off three who shot a back nine gross score of 30 which included six birdies. With partner Steve Pickup of Castlefields (15) they held the clubhouse lead with 44 points for three hours until the very last grouping produced a winning 45.

Darren Arber
The winning Am-Am pair was Mick Connolly (14) and John Wodsworth (8) (pictured left) of host club Crosland Heath producing a very consistent round with no dropped shots and only one gross birdie, a 4 at the par 5 13th.

Third place went to the Marsden pairing of Paul Saxon (6) and Pete Doolan (14) with 43 points. Only one gross eagle was recorded, by N. Sutton (7) of Outlane at the par 5 15th.

The Pro-Am section was just as closely contested with Rob Booth and Andy Hare (3) of West End coming out on top with a score of 41 points from Jamie Coverley and Gary Ward (8) of Bradley Park on 40 points and Chris Hanson and A Appleyard (5) of Woodsome Hall / Bradley Hall on 39.

Golfers up for the challenge

Excellent response to launch of new event
Club golfers throughout the North of England are proving that they are up for a challenge with places in the new Fixby Challenge at Huddersfield Golf Club on Friday 17th June being snapped up very quickly.

Almost 100 golfers have already signed-up for the 18 hole strokeplay tournament at the HHDUGC's top course and many more have expressed their interest in entering. The leading score on the day will qualify for a two-day, 72-hole competition at Alwoodley Golf Club in late-September - with food and accommodation included - plus there is a £200 voucher for the best gross score.

Dewsbury District member Edward Battye, who is organising the event as part of the Northern Matchplay Golf Championship, has been delighted with the initial response saying, "The number of entries has been really pleasing. I think the draw of the top prize has been appealing to many but also the fact that Fixby do not hold an individual open has also attracted a lot of players, especially those in the Huddersfield-Halifax area." He added, "We've got the course booked all day so can accommodate more players but I suspect it will become fully subscribed sooner rather than later."

The entry-fee (which includes soup & sandwiches) is already good value at £40 but anybody who gets their entry in before the 28th February will pay just £35. Download an entry-form.

Winner putts on the style with the number 23 to the fore

Kevin Sykes won the first medal of the season at Outlane Golf Club with a magnificent exhibition of putting when he registered a measly total of 23 putts in his winning round in the Division 1 category.

A first nine total of 23 points was matched on the back nine (23) to give him a 3 point winning margin in his amazing number 23 consistency. Kevin joked "It is probably 23 months since I won anything so the number 23 came in lucky today".

Keith Johnson came second with 43 points followed by Paul O'Hara (41) and Tim Brook with 40 points.

The Division 2 was won by Keith Oliver who just pipped David Brown with his better back nine after they both registered 45 points and another better back nine saw Ron Jarman getting the better of Kevin Slater who were also 3 points behind the winning total.

Division 1:
Kevin Sykes = 46 points
Keith Johnson = 43
Paul O,Hara = 41
Tim Brook = 40

Division 2:
Keith Oliver = 45 points
David Brown = 45
Ron Jarman = 42
Kevin Slater = 42

Golf Factor Returns to Yorkshire

THE GOLF FACTOR IS BACK IN YORKSHIRE AND THIS YEAR IT’S GOING TO BE EVEN BIGGER AND BETTER!

Following two tremendously successful years and having been rolled out across 4 counties, Golf Factor 2011 is re-launching this week in Yorkshire.

The Golf Factor is back for 2011
Golf Factor is a talent search for junior golfers which has become a well supported and established event over the last two years. Winners receive a fantastic package of golf support including equipment, swing and mind coaching provided by Direct Golf UK and John Letters Golf Academy.

This year organisers have added a new category – “Future Stars” for young people who are new to the game. James Beattie Junior Golf development Coordinator for John Letters Golf Academies said “We work in schools every day to introduce the game to school children so we came up with a skills test for new players to encourage entries from novices to experience a golf factor event”.

All junior golfers with a handicap can enter golf factor. Players must hit a variety of shots in front of a panel of expert judges whom score the candidates performance. Successful applicants progress through to a “boot camp” which is a more intensive set of skills test and the final is played on a golf course. All participants also receive a goody bag for entering.

Alex Robinson winner of Golf Factor 2010 knows the pressures of the competition and is to urging junior golfers to enter, “Golf Factor is the best thing I have ever done and the support I have received since winning the final has really improved my game. It’s great fun and a good test of your nerve under pressure!”

Golf Factor events are very much a fun, family occasion and trick show artist Rob Brown will be on hand demonstrating his amazing talent. This year the competition is being supported by the Chris Gill Junior Golf Foundation, a newly formed community interest company set up by John Letters Golf Academy founder John Andrew in memory of his good friend Chris Gill, who was a big supporter of junior golf in the North West.

Golf Factor entry forms are available online at www.johnletters.com or in Direct Golf UK stores or you can email golffactor@johnletters.com for an application form.

Event Details:
Stage One: 30th April & 1st May
Stage Two & Three: 14th May
Grand Final: 15th May

Closing date for applications: 31st March 2011

New forum for Yorkshire golfers

A brand new forum has been set up for golfers in Yorkshire to debate, discuss and exchange views about golf in the White Rose county.

The new Yorkshire Golf Forum
As it is the only golf dedicated forum in Yorkshire it is expected to prove popular with the start of the golf season fast approaching.

Launched in late November last year, the forum is growing steadily with over 1,000 messages already posted, thanks to the contributions of the members from all corners of the county.

It can be viewed at: http://yorkshiregolf.proboards.com and is quick and easy to register.

The Yorkshire Golf website, designed to accompany the forum, is even newer having been published just two weeks ago. The site contains details about the vast majority of golf clubs in Yorkshire as well as containing a news section.
