The Bank holiday medals proved very fruitful for three of the Outlane junior team who are showing great promise for the forthcoming season.
In the Monday Medal Division 1 category15 years old Michael Thomas produced a round which had no worse than a 5 on the card and came first with a 43 point total and he has now reduced his handicap a further 2 shots which suggests there is more to come.
In the Good Friday Medal 14 years old Tom Wimpenny also reduced his handicap by 2 shots with 42 points in the Division 2 category to finish an excellent second. Another of the junior team 14 years old Joe Blackwell had 38 points which also reduced his handicap 1 shot and so the junior section is looking rather rather rosy at the moment.
The Good Friday Medal winners Granville Jenkinson (Division 1 ) and Dennis Pearcey (Division 2 ) couldn't keep up their form in the Monday Medal and the former had 10 points less whist the latter had 17 points less which you can say they went from a Good Friday to a bad Monday . Barry Kaye won his first competition at Outlane with 44 points in the latter competition.
Regarding the juniors Bob Hazelden said, " After losing most of the junior team from last year with them being over age we thought we would be struggling this season as they are the youngest set of juniors we have had to compete in the league and with these 3 and another 13 years old coming through i am delighted with their progress so far and they have all come through David Chapmans Saturday morning junior clinic sessions."

High turn-out for Pro's Medal at Bradley Hall
With the qualifying rounds of the Waller Cup having been completed without any rain interruptions, a 'free' Saturday provided an opportunity for the professional at Bradley Hall, Peter Wood, to run a 'Profesionals Medal'.
Even though it was Easter Saturday, the interest from the members was such that an almost full field participated.
A light breeze provided an ideal opportunity for players to reduce their handicaps and this was reflected in 18 scores being under the standard scratch of 70. With a nett score of 61, the clear leader was Jamie Hellawell (17), who, after two seasons of struggling with his game, finally put every aspect together to leave him 4 strokes clear.
In second place was Tony Morrison (10), with the best gross of 75 and the best of the nett 65's, and another golfer who saw a welcome return to form and edging out Mark Leonard (12) and David Tomlinson (15) with the same score.
Leading scores:
J.Hellawell 78 - 17 = 61
A.Morrison 75 - 10 = 65

Last years winners scramble to remarkable victory
The Annual Texas Scramble at Outlane produced an astonishing result with 6 teams on a 56 score but a .1 decimal point enabled last years winners to make their point and scramble to a win which had significant statistics from the first two teams.
![]() |
| Neil, Nick, Jarrad & Paul |
The winning team of Neil Hughes, Nick Sutton, Jarrad Hazelden and Paul Walker had a bogey free round and even had a gross three on the 500 yards par five 18th hole which gave them a 56.3 nett score. They were also the lowest handicapped team and only 3.7 came off their gross score which was quite an achievement as their 11 under gross par showed.
The remaining five teams on a 56 score saw 3 teams on 56.4 followed by 56.5 and 56.6. Granville and Bryn Jenkinson, Peter Lawrence Brown and Gary Senior who finished second were one hole away from a bogey free round and their five on the second hole cost them dearly as they would have won with a par but won the count back with another near perfect round.
The course was in magnificent condition and with the Sunday weather it made for a day when scoring was also something special.

Hanson continues good form
Chris Hanson continued his good season with a win in the Yorkshire PGA Links Challenge at Bridlington Links on Wednesday.
His score of 65, seven under par, was enough to win by 3 shots.
This was the first event counting for the 2011 YPGA order of merit.
Dempsey & Newey win at Todmorden
Todmorden Golf Club presented the course in excellent condition for the latest HHDGA Winter Alliance meeting and the contestants welcomed the fast greens. The weather was more like June than April with warm sunshine and a light breeze.

| Dempsey & Newey with Vincent Korobczke |
The am-am section was closely contested with Adam Walker (3) / Aaron Schnake (1) Longley Park / Ind Huddersfield with 42 points on a card with 4 gross birdies and no bogies for a gross 4 under par round looking likely winners. However they were then headed by Mike Dempsey (10) / Pete Newey (15) Ind. Huddersfield with 43 points. A further 43 point card was returned by Terry Makin (10) / Michael Hartley (10) Todmorden who lost out on a back 9 countback.
A poorly supported pro-am section was won by Darren Arber / Steve Boustead (17) West End with 39 points. The Ronnie Parkinson Trophy was presented to Dempsey and Newey by Todmorden Captain Vincent Korobczke.
There is no change to the lead in the Pro Order of Merit with Rob Booth on 63 and Gareth Evans on 56.

Local Union boys in County Matches.
Bower, seen in the photo on the left, is captain of the Yorkshire side and lead the team to success in the morning foursomes with an emphatic 5-1 win . The team continued their success in the afternoon, beating the home side 11-1 in the singles. An outstanding 16-2 win for Yorkshire's first match of the season.
It was Nick Marsh’s first outing for Yorkshire , his selection coming after a successful winter of EGU training , whilst Jamie Bower has recently been selected to represent England at a forthcoming International Match in Denmark .

Charlotte wins in Style
The Haigh Vase, which is one of the oldest Ladies trophies at Outlane Golf Club, was won by the youngest member of the Ladies section.
And 14-years-old Charlotte Hirst also produced the best score of a round of golf that will be hard to beat this season.
The youngster won her second competition at the club and had an impressive five shot margin victory in her 67 which suggests she will be bringing her handicap down rapidly. In second place was Gill Morris with a 72 and Christine Lamont also produced her best round since joining and with a 76 took third prize.
New member Debbie Greenwood, taking part in her first 18 hole competition, also impressed with a 78 score and had the best gross score of 84.

Waller Cup Round Two Results
On Saturday, the second of the two qualifying rounds of the Waller Cup were held at Bradley Hall to determine the final qualifiers for the matchplay stages.
The competitors were blessed for most of the day with light winds and a clear blue sky and a course that looked an absolute picture. The fairways had been scarified and sculptured during the week and the greens which are now showing some growth were running fast and true. However, many players were unable to take advantage and their difficulties were reflected in the C.S.S. again rising to 71.
In Division 1, the best score so far returned in any competition this season was from Craig Gaukroger (13), whose nett score of 63 comfortably put him in first place and he was four shots clear of second placed Mark Murphy (12) with the 'evergreen' Andy Whitworth (0) one shot further back. The final place was secured by Josh Fairburn (6) with the best of the 69's also returned by Richard Dubaj (11) and Stuart Bradley (7).
Division 2 showed a welcome return to form from the popular, Peter Lister (18) who has suffered with back problems in recent years and as a consequence has restricted his golf to only a handful of rounds. Hopefully this is now behind him and he can look forward to once more being able to enjoy pain free golf.
Past Rabbit Captain, Eric Shrimpton and John Chadwick with their nett 69's and Richard Payne with the best of the 70's completed the line up for the matchplay draw.

Crow Nest Ladies Flying High
Last weekend saw the Crow Nest Park ladies play their first ADP matches.
On Saturday they visited Bondhay Golf Club in Worksop and came away with a great 2-1 win. Then on Sunday they travelled up the road to Huddersfield Golf Club and scored a resounding 3-0 victory.
Waller Cup Rd1 Qualifiers
Saturday saw the first qualifying round of the Waller Cup at a sunny and warm Bradley Hall.
Two qualifying rounds are played in successive weeks and the first four best nett scores in each division (0-15 and 16-28) progress to a matchplay knockout over the season to determine the ultimate winners.
The strong winds from the past few days had reduced considerably but with the course playing its full length and the greens being quite slick but true, the C.S.S. increased to 71.
In Division 1, Scratch Team member Andy Appleyard (5) shot a level gross score of 70 (65 nett) to easily claim the first of the qualifying slots. In second place was Simon Rome (7), a relatively new member to the Club with a nett 67, just edging out John M.Taylor (13) on a better back nine. Ian Ambler (13) made sure of the final slot with the best of the 68's which were recorded by head greenkeeper, Alan Court (9), Mark Calligan (10), David Ellis (6) and Adam Pearson (10).
In Division 2, a long time member of the Club and 'senior citizen' Rodney Atkinson (17) had two shots to spare with his nett 66 and in so doing moved back into the 'tigers' ranks along with former Huddersfield League cricketer, Ian Roebuck (16) with his nett 68.
Brian Hadcroft (17), a former winner of the competition and Sean Lang (16) also go into the matchplay draw.
A very encouraging total of 160 members participated in the competition, reflecting the current enthusiasm that the club is now enjoying. The second qualifying round is due to be played next Saturday (weather permitting!!!)

| Andy Hare & Rob Booth |
The green-keepers had worked hard to get the course into very good condition for early season and play was from the back white tees and mats for the par threes. The greens were just slow enough to keep balls from being blown off the green but were still quite quick.
The Pro-Am section was won by the home pairing of Rob Booth and Andy Hare (3) with a very good 42 points made up entirely of 2 and 3 point scores. Second were John Ambler and Brian Stacey (11) of Longley Park with 39 points who had all the scores from 0 to 4. John’s eagle on the 480 yd 16th with a 3 wood, 5 iron and 30ft put, he claims to be his best 3 shots in a very long time. Third were Chris Hanson paired with Andy Appleyard (3) of the home club with 38 points.
The Am-Am section was won by Patrick O’Flynn (13), Outlane, and Andy McLaughlin (8) Ind. Woodsome Hall, with 40 points. Second were Mick Dempsey (10) and Pete Newey (15), Ind. Fixby, with 38 points on a back nine countback from Garry Shuttleworth (11) and Simon Kent (20) of Bradley Hall.
Rob Booth now moves to the top of the Order of Merit with 63 points from Gareth Evans on 56 and Chris Hanson on 47.

The Route of John Cocking: Captain - President - Captain - President
This is the Halifax & Huddersfield golf route Marsden's John Cocking has done in his 56 years service of membership at the Hemplow course.
John is the fifth from the left in the photo (i.e. the one with the beard) with the 2011 incoming Huddersfield clubs' Captains and Union President Richard Kaye (behind John) at the 52nd Annual Past Captains dinner at Fixby.
His remarkable journey started in 1955 when he joined Marsden and became Captain of the club in 1975 The next milestone came in 1997 when he became President of the H.H.D.U.G.C. and then another honour came his way in 2010 when he became The Wednesday Society Captain and then when it was Marsden Golf Clubs turn for the President of the Past Captains in 2011 there was no one better to hold this office (The Huddersfield Past Captains President comes in strict rotation of the clubs). He also has had success on the golfing circuit with two wins in the annual Seniors Competition and was champion for the second time in 2010.
The Huddersfield incoming captains are invited guests of the association at the dinner and the clubs represented are Outlane's Stuart Chaplin, Longley Park's Russel Hayden , Dewsbury's Rodney Burgin, Marsden's Adrian Hinchcliffe , Huddersfield's Steve Tempest, Woodsome Hall's James Haigh , Meltham's Adrian Ashworth , Bradley Park's Colin Robinson and Crosland Heath's Andy Taylor.
Bradley Hall welcome new Captain
The members of Bradley Hall Golf Club welcomed in their new Captain, Mr. Roy Lofts, on Saturday with what has become a regular feature of the year, a Texas Scramble and the Captain 'driving in' followed by a 'sell out' evening meal with entertainment.
A total of 192 golfers, comprising men, ladies and juniors, playing in teams of four, participated in the golf and despite the quite strong westerly wind, the scoring was very respectable.
The winning team comprising Clive McFadzean (3), his wife Samantha (36), Dean Alexis (6) and Carl Gillespie (6) returned nett score of 54.9 and were presented with their prizes by the Captain.
In second place wereSteve Hopkinson (6), Neil Crowther (6), Mark Calligan (10) and Martin Worsick (11) with a nett score of 56.7 and just edging out the team of Geoff Todd (7), Craig Gaukroger (13), Alan Heywood (12) and Richard Pilkington (11) on a back six countback.
There was a tremendous atmosphere and buzz throughout the day and seemed to reflect the positive the spirit being shown throught all sections of the Club in these difficult times.
Latest adventure at Crow Nest
On Saturday 26th March Dean Wilson drove into office as Club Captain for the season 2011-12, and was shortly followed by his wife Ruth who drove into office as the Clubs Lady Captain. Whilst the club has seen in the past husband and wives holding both the Club Captaincy and the Lady Captains office, no couple has done so in the same year.
This years Captains Drive in Day saw a tremendous turnout as over 110 members watched the drive in ceremony. In addition to the new Club & Lady Captains drives into office, Brian Turner drove into his Seniors Captaincy, Steve Yendley drove into office as the Rabbit Captain and Luke Higgins drove in as Junior Captain. Despite the clearly evident nerves , all the Captains struck their drives superbly down the 1st fairway and a sweep for the collective distance of all 5 drives raised over £100 for the Clubs Junior Section.
After the drive in ceremony, the members played a Texas Scramble competition over an adjusted 9 hole layout of the award winning Hove Edge course. The winners team included the wife of new Senior Captain Jackie Turner with a net 9 hole score of 22.
Following the competition over 100 members stayed to witness the presentation of the new Club Captains Green Jacket after which he made an emotional speech and reflected on what had been a very enjoyable and special day not only for his wife and himself, but also for all of the other Captains who had taken on the mantle of section Captains.

West End Alliance Report
Conditions could hardly have been better at West End, more like summer than early spring, with sunshine and negligible wind for last week's Alliance meeting.
The course was in fine condition although play was from forward tees and some tee mats. The greens were quite fast and true, very good for the end of winter.
Scoring was generally fairly steady with not too many blobs or an excess of eagles.
The pro-am section was won jointly by Gareth Evans (scr) and David Wilcock (20) of Crow Nest Park and John Ambler (scr) and Adam Walker (3) of Longley Park with 41 points. Both pairs managed an eagle, gross on the 17th for Evans, chip in from 10yds off the green, and net on the 14th for Walker.
The am-am section was won on a back 6 countback by Jimmy Caine (2) and Martin Travis (6) of Crosland Heath from Murray Powell (15) and Steve Ambler (13) of West End on 42 points. Third were Steve Robinson (12) and Richard Hanson (6) of Crosland Heath on 40 points.

Junior Captains Team Win Yellow Peril Competition
A Yellow Peril Competition is when a team have one yellow ball which is passed in strict rotation between all the players on different holes which has to count with the best score of the other players. Working out who would have shots on the hole when in possession of the yellow ball comes into the competition strategy.
Newly installed Outlane Junior Captain Cameron West led his team to a 1 point victory from last years Junior Captains team led by Bryn Jenkinson in the Yellow Peril competition. Cameron's team of his father Stuart West, Steve Cooper and John Stephenson had a total of 88 points which included a run of 20 points in three consecutive holes from the 11th which obviously helped their victory but also gave them momentum on the the final holes.
The winning combination worked out their order of play perfectly with nothing less than 4 points on any hole which is unusual as having possession of the yellow ball can result in no points to add to the best other ball.
Last years junior captain Bryn Jenkinson included his grandfather Granville Jenkinson, Gordon Drysdale and last years club captain Peter Lawrence Brown in his team but just came up 1 point short to finish runners-up but they had something to celebrate when the latter player HOLED in ONE on the 16th hole.
This is the second hole-in-one in consecutive competitions and the club recognize this feat with a small engraved plaque which goes on display in the clubhouse lounge pelmet.
Latest Northern Pro Tour results
Latest result from the Northern Pro Tour event at Fleetwood Golf Club on Friday 1st April.
Moortown's Nick McCarthy made it an early season Yorkshire double as his blistering front 9 of 31 saw him post the only sub-par return on a windy and wintry day at Fleetwood.
Nick's two under return of 70 left him two clear of the field despite a three putt at the 18th.
Hart Common winner Chris Hanson was in a four way tie for sixth with Adam Stott, Ian Winstanley and Graham Neville all on 74.
An example of the strength of the wind can be illustrated by one three-ball on the 429 yard 16th where after all the players had hit two full drivers the closest to the green was still a full 9 iron away.
Hanson said “I scrapped it round in +2, what a crazy wind!! Managed to get a share for last place-money! Should pay for my bus fair!”
