Halifax win Junior Team Championship

Halifax Golf Club landed the HHDUGC Junior Team Championship, sponsored by Berties, at Meltham Golf Club on Sunday.

The 4-man team of Jamie Smith, Connah Judson, Calum Lewis and Jack Waterworth prevailed with a total of 257 where the best three gross scores counted for the teal tally. Smith lead the way with an 82, Judson was a stroke behind whilst Lewis added a 92 to seal the victory.

The Ogden club will now go on to play in the county qualifying competition for the EGU Junior Champion Club tournament.

West End won the best nett team score with a total of 222. The team comprising James Dix, Joe Stott, Brad Hardcastle & Chris Bell.

The lowest gross score was produced by Yorkshire Boys captain and home club member Jamie Bower who carded a 73 whilst the best nett prize went to Bell for his 69. CSS was 72 for both rounds in testing conditions which saw strong winds and heavy rain showers.

Gale force winds for Beck Trophy

The mens 'A.G.Beck Trophy' was held on Saturday 28 May at Bradley Hall and not for the first time this season, the weather dictated that scoring would not be easy.

With almost gale force winds continually blowing down the course, interspersed with heavy showers, it was not surprising that none of the 150 competitors managed to break the par score of 70.

However, teeing off into the wind and rain in the second group of the day, Adam Pearson (9) had dropped only 2 shots, on the two par threes (2nd and 4th), at the turn. Then, standing on the 17th tee, he had dropped only 4 more shots but a seven on that hole and a par on the last, resulted in a nett score of 70, still an excellent return considering the conditions.

There was a strong possibility that the score would hold and it was well into the afternoon before another 70 was posted by Bill Hamilton (16) who showed tremendous determination to continue after dropping 4 shots on the very first hole! Whether that made him relax only he will know, as he parred the next 4 holes before recording a 6 on the sixth and a 7 on the seventh to turn in 42.

The back nine saw 3 further shots dropped to the sixteenth and despite a 7, 6, 4 finish he edged into the lead due to his better nett back 9.
Close behind with nett scores of 71, were Sean Lang (15), an inform Mark Calligan (8) and Mike Fisher (8).

The best gross of 75 was returned by Andy Whitworth (+1).

Such was the difficulty that once more the C.S.S. reached the maximum of 73.

Leading scores
W.Hamilton 86 - 16 = 70
A.Pearson 79 - 9 = 70
S.Lang 86 - 15 = 71

Perfect opportunity for inexperienced junior golfers

The Junior Claret Cup is being held at Crosland Heath Golf Club on Thursday June 2nd from 9:00am onwards.

The competition welcomes any juniors who want to experience playing in a competition and it is an opportunity for junior golfers who are not usually capable of entering their own club events due to restrictions as well as established junior members of clubs.

It is a Stableford competition which is open to boys and girls whatever their standard or ability and clubs can enter as many junior members to play for the Junior Claret Cup when the best two scores from each club will count for the trophy. There is a first and second joint prize and also best individual winners and any player entering will be paired up with where possible with someone of equal ability.

The cost of the competition is £5 which includes a drink and treat on arrival and after their round lunch is included in the event.

Spokesperson Bob Hazelden says "This competition is in its 6th year and we have had 5 different clubs winning each time and usually the club that wins the Claret Cup have the opportunity of holding it at their course the following year and whilst individuals can enter the junior organiser at clubs can enter a team on block with names and handicaps."

He added, "The Claret Cup (It is a lovely miniature copy of the original from The Open Golf event) has been kindly donated by David and Janet Cox from Hebden Bridge Golf Club and they also sponsor the prizes and meals in what is a brilliant opportunity for juniors who are starting their golf careers and having an experience of playing in a competition for possibly the first time without any pressure."

There are still places available to enter and you can ring Bob on 01484 655097 or David Cox on 01422 883898 for a tee time.

Poor finishes costly for Hanson

Chris Hanson finished tied 39th in the Jamega Tour event at Wharton Park, Worcestershire.

The event was won by Lee James with scores of 68, 69 for a 137 total (5 under par).

Hanson suffered on the back six holes of both his rounds, dropping 5 shots in his opening 76 and 4 in his second round level par 71.

Those 9 dropped shots kept him out of contention but closer than most of the field of 122.

Last hole agony for Chris

The Outlane Mid-Summer Cup had a dramatic end to it with first round leader Chris Rothery on the verge of his first major trophy victory.

The format of the competition is that on a Saturday all players in the competition play and then the top 32 players then play on a Sunday with their score being added to their first round to determine the 36 hole competition total.

The players with the higher scores tee off first in rotation leaving the best two scores teeing off last to try and finalize a close finish for the Mid-Summer Cup. Jim Pryce who had teed off fourth from last after his first round 70 set a 144 total and with nobody bettering it after the 30 players had come in with their totals it was left to the final couple to see if they could snatch it from him.

However the last hole for Chris was decisive as unknown to him a triple bogey would have won him the Cup but a 3 putt on the final hole gave him a nine after getting in trouble half way up the fairway which also gave him a 144 total after his first round score of 66 which gave him a 4 shot lead for the final round.

Another player to come unstuck on 2 par 5s was Barry Hinchcliffe who had a 146 total after posting an excellent 72 second round score and then Jarrad Hazelden's 148 total brought him down the leader board after his earlier start had put him on top for a while.

Chris's comment afterwards "I wish i had known what I needed up the last and you might say i paid the PRICE for being too adventurous as i am sure i could have played safe from the position I was in."

Mid-Summer Championship
1.Jim Pryce  70 + 74 = 144 * better second round score
2. Chris Rothery  64 + 78 = 144
3. Barry Hinchcliffe  74 + 72 = 146
4. Jarrad Hazelden  73 + 75 = 148 * better second round score
5. Simon Wagstaff  70 + 78 = 148
6. Bryn Jenkinson  73 + 76 = 149

Crow Nest Presidents Day

The sixteenth President's Day was held at Crow Nest Park Golf Club on Saturday 14th May 2011.

Weather conditions were very testing with strong winds and intermittent heavy rain showers but that didn't deter the 130 competitors playing in the four competitions and there was some exceptionally good golf played.

The results were as follows:-

Junior Competition:
3rd place - Kyle Broadbent: 33 points
Runner Up - Isaac Nicholl: 37 points
Winner - Scott Henry - 40 points.

The longest drive was won by Junior Captain Luke Higgins.

Ladies non-qualifying competition winner - Elaine Mackie

Kathy Hitchcock last won this competition in Millennium year 2000 and was delighted to lift the trophy after a gap of eleven years.

The longest/straightest drive challenge was won by Diane Higgins and Nearest the Pin by Carole Hampson.

In the men's President's Cup competition Club Captain Dean Wilson shot the best gross of the day with a two over par 72 but the winner of the trophy, with a net 67 was Jimmy Lough, making it two wins in three years.

Runner up - Ashley Wales
3rd place - Dean Wilson

Longest Drive - Mark Widdop
Nearest the Pin - Tony Hereford

The men's non-qualifying competition was won by Tony Hereford.

Club President, John Turner thanked everyone who had played in the four competitions and all who had helped to make the day a success. Charlottes Triple Success

The Outlane Lady Captains Prize which is played over two days saw 14 years old Charlotte Hirst claiming her third trophy in the Ladies Section of the club.

Lady Captain Dr Gillian Goodlass put on a superb two day event which saw 50 members and guests attending the prize presentation on the Sunday evening after the second round of golf which completed the two round major competition.

The first round starts on the Thursday and concludes on the Sunday which was marginally better weather wise than the opening round.

The Thursday morning players were faced with horrendous weather and whilst it improved vastly in the evening the round of the day came from Elaine Peel who faced the morning elements and came in with a magnificent 76 nett score.

The Sunday round saw most of the players improving their first round efforts and a 75 nett saw Wendy Stott claiming the second round prize.

There was also a 9 hole competition for players who don't play in the main competition and this went to Dot Wellings who just got the better of Iris Perkins with her first round 16 Stableford points.

Charlotte the winner of the Lady Captains Prize had already won two competitions but this one stands out as she kept her head with players around her improving their earlier round scores to push her all the way and her 150 total was 1 better than Carol Crowthers 151 who had an excellent 70 in the second round to finish second which was an improvement of 11 shots from the earlier round and Vice Captain Linda Easton was a further shot back with a 77 and 75 to total152.

Lady Captains Prize 36 Hole Competition
1. Charlotte Hirst 78 -- 72 = 150
2. Carol Crowther 81 --70 = 151
3. Linda Easton 77 -- 75 = 152

Round 1 (Thursday) : Elaine Peel -- 76
Round 2 (Sunday) : Wendy Stott --75

Shea's sparkling 67

Following from the near gale force easterly winds at Bradley Hall on the previous Saturday, competitors for the Woodruff Cup this weekend were faced with driving rain and equally strong winds but this time from the west. As Bradley Hall runs in an east/west direction, most of the holes are played directly into the wind or directly downwind.

The Woodruff Cup is primarily for the 'tiger' golfers and carries a maximum handicap limit of 15 and the majority of the 149 participants were on or below that limit but such was the difficulty that the C.S.S. again reached the limit of 73.

Two golfers who are currently on a good run of form, Geoff Pearson (15) and Gary Parker (11), set a challanging target with nett scores of 70 and 71 respectively and although other early starters managed to get within one or two shots, it was not until the latter stages that the position dramatically changed.

Starting at lunchtime, Mick Shea (8) dropped only 5 shots to the course and in so doing, set an unbeatable nett score of 67. This was a magnificent achievement, and although there was little rain for him to contend with, the strong winds of the morning were still evident as he walked off the final green.

Graham Brazier (13) was again in contention, two shots further back and Andy Appleyard (4) with the lowest gross score of 74, in third place and confirming his excellent form of late.

In fourth place, Carl Littlewood (13), managing to move ahead of the two early pace setters.

Leading Scores

Hanson recovers well at Cottingham

Having qualified comfortably for the Renewable Service Group Pro-Am at Cottingham Parks Golf Club on Thursday Chris Hanson carded a first round with six birdies, five bogeys and one double bogey to be tied 21st at the end of play on one over par.

His second round of three under yesterday also contained six birdies but this time only three bogeys took the edge off a good recovery in the final round for the former winner.

The overnight leader had been Matthew Marsh from Hallowes on five under who went on to win the event.

Just after his round Hanson tweeted, "Three under today in a sneaky wind!! Played alright, just kept it a bit more in play! Hope to finish well up!!"

In the end it gave the Woodsome Hall player a share of third place.

Champion Marsh admitted he won’t be going on a spending spree though after picking up a career best £4,000 cheque for winning the tournament.

Most of the money will be used to clear my credit card,” said the teaching professional at Sheffield club Hallowes. But he promised to give himself a “small treat” on his 26th birthday later this month.

This was my 10th victory since I joined the paid ranks in 2005 but my first in the region so it’s been a long time coming,” he observed.

Marsh, who also competes on the EuroPro Tour, added a 70 to his opening of 67 to finish on seven-under-par and three ahead of Chorley’s Mark Bradley, a former PGA North Region champion.

It was a bit of an up and down round,” he conceded. “Not many pars but plenty of birdies and bogeys. But this is a tight course with tree-lined fairways so you are punished if you go off line. I stuck to my game plan I used in the qualifier and first round by keeping the ball out of trouble.”

The event was filmed by Green Light TV and will be shown on Sky.

SCORES: 137 Matthew Marsh (Hallowes) 67 70; 140 Mark Bradley (Chorley) 71 69; 142 Chris Hanson (Woodsome Hall) 73 69, Martyn Hamer (Ellesmere) 70 72, John Wells (Cherry Burton) 69 73; 144 Jon Cheetham (Styal) 71 73, George Cowan (Westerhope) 72 72, Steve Parry (NW Golf School) 73 71; 145 John Cheetham (Marriott Worsley Park) 75 70, Chris Mathews (Mytton Hall) 71 74.

John's gross 70 doesn't win it

The May Medal which incorporates the Golf Clubs Captains Charity was very well attended by the members and The Yorkshire Air Ambulance which is this years Captains Charity will benefit from the first of numerous events from this years Captain Stuart Chaplin.

A gross round of 70 normally would be good enough to win any competition but John Lawton's super round gave him a nett score of 64 and as he was an early starter the late starters hovered round the leader board wondering how to beat that.

However there were two people who did beat it and three more who equalled his nett score on a day when scoring brought the standard scratch down to 69 on the par 71 course.

The man to beat it in the first Division was Michael Bullas who's 76 gross gave him a 63 nett and then Darren Brown in the second Division improved that to a 62 nett after his 85 gross.

Darren Cooper had a 64 nett in the first Division with Neil Hughes and Dan Schofield also matching it in the second Division and with several players also coming in with scores after playing under their handicap were surprised to find they didn't get a reduction in their handicap such was the standard for the day.

First Division
Michael Bullas = 76 (13) = 63 nett
John Lawton = 70 (6) = 64 nett
Darren Cooper = 78 (14) = 64 nett
Paul Smallman = 76 (10) = 66 nett

Second Division
Darren Brown = 85 (23) = 62 nett
Neil Hughes = 80 (16) = 64 nett
Dan Schofield = 81 (17) = 64 nett
Shaukar Dar = 81 (16) = 65 nett

Hanson qualifies for the Cottingham Pro-Am

Sixty four professionals attempted to qualify at Cottingham Golf Club for the Renewable Service Group Pro Am staged by the North Region of the UK PGA.

Only 36 places were available for the two day event starting Friday 13th May so many were disappointed.

Woodsome Hall's Chris Hanson started his round with two bogeys but then birdied the next two holes to get back to level par.

Four more birdies were cancelled out by a bogey, a double bogey and a disappointing bogey at the last hole for a level par finish which meant a tie for 4th place. The leading qualifier was Graham Cox from Davenport G C on 3 under par.

Cottingham has staged the annual charity pro-am since soon after it opened in 1994 and it has grown every year.

"It started as a one round event then developed from there," said professional Chris Gray, a 48-year-old former Leeds Cup winner.

"This year we're supporting the Forces Children's Trust and we have secured sponsorship from the Renewable Service Group.

"We have catered for 52 teams in the past but we're had to cut the number because we could not accommodate everyone at the gala dinner."

The event is being filmed by Green Light TV and will be shown on Sky.

The line-up included several past winners including Hanson, the 2009 Spirotech Manchester Open champion, and with a minimum £15,000 prize-fund there's all to play for.

Mixed Friendly at Elland Golf Club

Peter Jackson and Molly Fielding
The first Mixed Friendly of the season was a busy affair for golfers at Elland. Forty people set out on a shotgun start on a sunny, clear, but chilly Friday evening. The playing format, over nine holes, was a four ball better ball Stableford, ¾ handicap.

Members enjoyed an informal supper on their return to the clubhouse and afterwards the winners were presented with their prizes. It was a close run to the finish with three couples scoring 20 points. A count back of the last six meant that 3rd place went to Peter and Linda Gul, 2nd place went to Ian and Elaine Sunderland, but the winners were Peter Jackson and Molly Fielding.

The event was organised by Robert and Tracey Ward. Robert announced that there will be no Mixed Friendly in May, the next one being Friday 24th June, at 5.30, which will be over 18 holes.

In keeping with the Royal Wedding day, a toast was made to the happy couple, Kate and William and congratulations were given to Gerald and Margaret Walker, from Elland – celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary.

Bradley Hall proving to be tough test

With the absence of any rainfall for over 6 weeks, Bradley Hall, no doubt in keeping with many other courses, is proving to be a stiff test of golf for the majority of members.

Even though the tees and greens are watered each night, that benefit is soon lost during the daytime when having the ability to fully control shots into hard and dry greens, is where the lower handicap golfers prevail.

Those conditions, coupled with a strong easterly wind, were reflected in the scores returned in the monthly Stableford and pushing up the C.S.S. to the maximum of 73.

In Division 1, the clear leader was Mark Calligan (9) with an almost unbelievable 40 points and in so doing, had shots to spare on a number of the members of the Scratch Team. Martin Cockcroft (3) being 2 adrift, Andy Appleyard (4), a further shot back and Andy Whitworth (+1), 6 behind.

In between, recently retired Richard Payne (15) continued his rich run of form with 36 points, along with Scott Peel (8) and 72 year old John Dolan (14) with 35.

In Division 2, Doug Morgan (28) with 36 points beat Paul Toon (16) on a back nine countback with Rob Holroyd (16) a further shot back in third place.

There is no doubt that when the wind comes from the east, Bradley Hall is quite a challenge with tight driving holes being directly into the wind.
