Crow Nest Captains Forum

Over 140 members and guests helped to make Saturday 23rd July 2011 a day to remember for Club Captain Dean Wilson, as they enjoyed the evening celebrations at Crow Nest Park.

A record 107 competitors played in the main competition, which started with the first tee time of 7.15am. The conditions initially were reasonably calm but as the day progressed the wind picked up and caused some difficulties for the golfers who were the later starters. It was surprising, therefore, that the two best scores came from the afternoon session.

The popular winner was Eddie Spencer who carded a terrific score of net 63 and the runner up was senior golfer Graham Thomas with a net 64.

During the speeches the fine condition of this award winning course was highlighted and thanks were extended to the greens team for their efforts in producing a top quality course.

The Ladies Captains day Competition was won by Current Lady Captain and wife of the Club Captain, Ruth Wilson and the Juniors event was won by Scott Henry.

The evening presentation & function had a "Roman Toga" theme and most who attended dressed up for the occasion. A "Hogroast" was provided by the Club Caterers The Design House and this proved to be a very popular option as members "tucked " into the tasty and well presented food. The evening entertainment was provided by local singer "Bubbles" who sang for the members which resulted in an encore, as the dancing went on into the early hours.

Overall, a day to remember and one that will live long in the memories of those who attended.

Their was also a hole in one on the Saturday with Len Campey (pictured) aceing the 14th hole with a rescue club. The Saturday evening Captains Weekend Social saw The Port Brothers entertaining the members with a fantastic Rock and Roll evening and with the weather and course in excellent condition it was a weekend of great success.

Country Members Cup Results

On a bright and somewhat breezy day, the 'Country Members Cup' was held at Bradley Hall on Saturday 23 July.

The event which, was donated by a group of country members many years ago, is the bogey format where competitors play against the course.

It is a nett competition and the winner is the player who has the greatest success in bettering the par score on the 18 holes. Needless to say, several players find the format a little confusing and several cards were submitted incorrectly marked.

The ultimate winner was John Chadwick (18) who finished with a score of +5 and he was closely challenged by the immediate past captain, and Scratch Team member,David Whitaker (4) with +4. The next two places were taken by past junior captains, Jonathan Gittins (8) and Andy Hare (3) both with a count of +3.

A total of 18 players achieved plus scores and a further 9 finished level.

Sandra rose to the occasion

The Outlane Mister Captains Ladies Prize (Roses and Vouchers) saw Sandra Eastwood produce a round that was consistent to such an extent that even a 7 on one hole didn't affect her composure as she consistently scored with regularity nett pars to register a 72 winning score.

Second placed Linda Easton could have made it a close finish but one hole ruined her finished score of 74 and she did really well to recover from a disastrous 10.

However a nearest the pin prize came her way whilst Charlotte Hirst had a better back nine than Annette Heaton who both registered a 75. There was also a nine hole competition for some ladies and Dot Wellings took the prize with 17 Stableford points.

Treble Success as team storm to victory

The Outlane annual Texas Scramble was won by a team who completed a hat trick of wins in this event with Paul Walker, Nick Sutton, Neil Hughes and Jarrad Hazelden scoring a 58.4 nett score to come out on top.

In second place with a score of 59.1 was Steve Marshall, Leo Scott, Stewart Swift and Steve Spencer followed by Paul Thomas,Simon Wagstaffe, Bryn Jenkinson and Nathan Lockwood who registered 60.2.

The shotgun start saw teams having a battle in testing conditions - there was strong winds and heavy rain showers and the winners could even afford 2 bogies on holes such was the abnormal weather at this time of the year but their 10 birdies were enough to clinch their treble success in this competition.

The course stood up remarkably well considering the buffeting it got which made some holes unreachable in normal stroke regulation.

2nd: Steve Marshall,Leo Scott,Stewart Swift, Steve Spencer = 59.1
3rd: Paul Thomas, Simon Wagstaffe, Bryn Jenkinson, Nathan Lockwood = 60.2

Worsman Trophy Report

The 'Worsman Trophy' was held at Bradley Hall on Saturday 17 July. The forecast of heavy and prolonged rain could not have been more accurate and a course inspection in mid morning deemed the course only just playable with several greens with standing water.

By this time, however, the early starters were approaching the finishing holes and the early leader, Gary Shuttleworth(11), who was in the first group, lead the way with a nett score of 68, having had to endure the absolute worst weather of the day, along with Mark Bailey7) and Tony Morrison (8) who were only a shot back.

As lunchtime approached and with skies clearing, so the scoring improved and Josh Fairburn (6) with his best round ever and the lowest gross of the day 69 to give him an unbeatable nett 63 and the 'Worsman Trohpy'
In second place, Paul Firth (10), continued with another impressive under par score of 67, along with playing partner, David Cameron (6), John Rhodes (9), Mark Dyson (18) and Tony Haigh (11).

Such was the conditions that a total of 50 players failed to complete their rounds. However, one to do so was none other than the instigator of the competition, Brian Worsman, a past Captain and past President of the Club and now in his senior years. What an example to set.

Hanging Heaton Juniors Impress at The Belfry

After qualifying for the Fundraising Final at The Belfry back in April, Hanging Heaton members Declan Colleran, Billy MacIver and Dominic Hale played at the West Midlands course on 11th July 2011.

The competition involved the qualifying round in April at Halifax West End where they raised nearly £300 for The British Heart Foundation.

Through this they qualified for the final at The Belfry on the Derby Course. This round consisted of 2 players out of the 3 person team to count in the scoring, Declan had 34 points, Dominic 40 and Billy 37. The two top scores contributed to make a total of 77 points. This finished in second place, just two points behind the leaders of 79.

The club has expressed how proud they are of the three players, and can already see how they are progressing as good young talented golfers.

Simon Beats The Weather!

Weatherspoons manager Simon McKenzie won the Outlane July Division 1 medal after playing early morning when the weather was not too good but as the day went on it improved for the afternoon players.

The winners round of 69 nett set the standard that was required but with several players registering no- returns after the deluge any player who came in with a below par nett round (71) had a chance for a prize and so it proved with only 5 entries below par, which put the standard scratch score up to 71 and that is virtually unknown at Outlane.

In second place in this division was Gavin Hirst who's 70 nett just pipped Jarrad Hazelden on a count back but the latter had the lowest gross and these three were the only ones to beat par in the first division. The Division 2 section only had 2 beating par with Brian Reynolds 65 nett and Steve Brearey 2 shots back with his 67 nett.

The July Medal has a format that incorporates The Sudworth Cup and was named after its first winner Mr.Elijah Sudworth in 1921 and is played as a Qualifying competition ,followed by scratch matchplay knockout by the top 8 gross scores .

Scratch & Single Figure Golfer at Bradley Hall

The 'Scratch Cup' and the 'Single Figure Golfer' competitions were held at Bradley Hall on Sunday 10 July.

The competitions are played over 36 holes and limited to golfers up to a handicap of nine. All participants are eligible for either trophy but can only win one competition, with the 'Scratch Cup' taking priority.

The leader in the clubhouse after the first round was Martin Cockcroft (3) with the only sub par round of 69 which put him in the lead for both competitions. He was however closely pursued for the 'Scratch Cup' by David Whitaker (4), Andrew Whitworth (+1) who both returned gross scores of 71, Richard Fairburn (5) with 72 and Andrew Appleyard (3) with 73.

In the chase for the 'Single Figure' title, Michael Appleyard (7) matched the nett 66 with Richard Fairburn and David Whitaker, the current holder of the title, only 1 shot back and four players on nett 70 namely Bruce Bain (8), David Cameron (6), Andrew Appleyard and Dean Alexis (7).

In the afternoon round, Scratch Team Captain, Paul Taylor (2) put himself very much into contention for the Scratch Cup with the best gross of the day 66 to give an overall total of 141 which was matched by Andrew Whitworth and a shot further back from Andrew Appleyard. However, with a gross 71 and a total of 140, Martin Cockcroft picked up his first 'Scratch Cup' much to the delight of his many friends and playing partners at the club.

He also finished with a nett score of 134 in the 'Single Figure' competition, but having secured the Scratch Cup, the title went to Andrew Appleyard following a one under gross score of 69 to leave him with a nett score of 136, followed closely by Paul Taylor, Andy Hare (3) and Richard Fairburn, all with overall nett scores of 137.

A total of 31 golfers took part in the event.

McGill Bowl

Add caption
The prestigious McGill bowl was played for at the Woodsome Hall Invitation Day on Saturday 9th July.

The format was, as usual, a Fourball Betterball Stableford. One member with an invited guest.

It was an honour this year to have the Grandson Paul McGill of the Trophy provider, Mr T. D. McGill who incidentally was the Club Captain in 1949, present the McGill Trophy to the winners, Steve Armitage Woodsome Hall and David Black Member at Shipley Beck Foot Golf Club, they came in with 44 points.

All said how well presented the course was and the course manager Chris Dyson came in for much praise.

The photo shows from the left Mr John Eyre, Club Professional who organised the day, James Haigh Woodsome Hall GC Captain, David Black member at Shipley Beck foot Golf Club, Steve Armitage Woodsome Member and Paul McGill Grandson of the Trophy provider.

Oldest & Youngest - Les 91 not out

Outlanes oldest member Les Sykes celebrated his 91st birthday on Sunday at the club with his golfing partners and he also had his photo taken with the clubs youngest member Gregory Hoyes to celebrate the occasion as there is an 80 years age gap between them.

Les played regularly with the clubs old professional Bill Garside after he retired from his Outlane post and he always said that Les had the smoothest swing he had seen and Bill certainly had taught and seen plenty of golfers.

Les was never a prolific winner of events but his left handed style never changed and when Bill passed away in 1994 he had lost one of his greatest admirers but he carried on with his golfing friends although a full round became more difficult as the years passed and he now just plays a few holes with his golfing friends.

Jubilee Trophy Results

The 'Jubilee Trophy' a men's greensome, was held at Bradley Hall on Saturday 9 July. Following the recent heavy rain showers and the forecast of more to come, only a handful of hardy soles were to be seen in shorts and shirt sleeves.

However, hardly a drop of rain fell and in the afternoon although there was a brisk wind, it was clear blue skies and warm sunshine.

Starting first at 7am, John Woodhouse and Paul Toon set a challenging target with a nett 67.2 and this was despite taking 8 strokes on the par 4 13th when their approach to the green was put into the ravine and a similar score of the par 5 16th when their approach was sliced out of bounds.

Some 2 hours later, their lead was lost to father and son pairing, Ian and Damian Roebuck who carded a nett 66.8 but as the afternoon arrived they were to be pushed into third place by the eventual winners, Paul Firth and Peter Spedding with a nett 66 and Paul Wilkes and Martin Reddy with 66.4.

The feature of the winning round was the touch around the greens of Paul Firth who chipped to within a matter of inches of many of the holes, thereby leaving his partner the simple task of tapping in for pars and birdies.

Junior Captain Josh Bailes and the immediate past Junior Captain, Andy Hare came in with a creditable 67.8 to claim the fifth place.

Bower is English School's National Champion

The English Schools National Championship was played at Belton Park Golf Club, near Grantham, Lincolnshire on Monday 27th June 2011.

The championship is a 36 holes scratch strokeplay competition.

Jamie Bower, the Yorkshire Boys captain from Meltham, scored a 1 over par 72 in the morning round, at this stage he was 4 strokes behind the leaders.

In the afternoon round Bower was 1 under par after 9 holes. He then played a stunning back nine  in 29 strokes, 6 under par, for a round of 7-under par 64 for a total of 136 (6-under par). This won the championship with his 64 being a new course record.

There were 5 regional championships to decide who played at the National Championships. Bower played at Whickham Golf Club in Durham where he won the 36 hole championship

There was also a Girls Championship on the day. There are 12 and six places for the Boy's and Girls respectively for the international teams to play against Scotland in September at Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club. Bower is in the team. There is also an International v Wales at Copt Heath Golf Club but Jamie is unavailable for this .

Saving the best until last

Last player out in the Presidents Prize at Outlane Golf Club, David Little, held his nerve when coming up the last hole knowing a par 5 would get him first place after Ex Rugby League player Gary Senior had held the lead throughout the day after his early start.

With the course in excellent condition 39 players were either under par or level par and also that maximum handicap total was 20 the winners score could even have been better as he normally plays off 21. The best gross went to Nigel Nuttall whose 73 was only 2 over par and it was matched by Steve Howlett who came second in the Division 1 prizes.

The Division 2 Prize was won by Dave Blundell with a 68 nett which was the same as Doug Smith but a better back 6 by the winner just pipped the Runner-Up. Nearest the pin prize on the 16th was won by Tony Stead who finished 1.80 meters from the hole.

Meanwhile, The Juniors play a Stableford competition and one player had a round that would have won the Presidents Prize if he had been playing in the main competition. Nathan Lockwood's gross 81 would have been a 61 nett and as he plays off 23 handicap he registered 49 points to be 13 points clear of second placed Jordan Barker who had 36 points.

Nathan started with a 4 pointer on the first hole and later repeated this 4 point total on another hole whilst scoring regulation pars on the rest of the holes. The remarkable round saw his handicap reduced by 5 shots and he now plays off 18.

Captain's Day report from Bradley Hall

The Captain of Bradley Hall Golf Club, Mr. Roy Lofts, held his 'Captains Day' at Bradley Hall Golf Club on Saturday 2nd July when a field of 183 male members competed.

The Captain was on the first tee at 7am to welcome the first of the competitors and remained there until the last group out at 3.30pm. Complementary bananas were provided on the tee by one of the members, Mick Appleyard and the Captain provided hot and cold food and drinks on the 10th tee.

The weather throughout the day could not have been better with hardly any wind (unusual at Bradley Hall), clear blue skies and warm sunshine and also the course could not have been presented in a better condition with immaculate fairways, fast and true greens and the rough was such that those not holding the fairway were at a distinct disadvantage.

The 'Captains Cup' is presented to the best nett score over 18 holes for players up to 18 handicap and alongside, a supplementary competition for the 19 to 28 handicap. In the main competition, no less than 19 golfers shot scores below the par of 70 and leading the field with nett scores of 62 were Glen Dutton (14) and Mark Wood (16).

The Captains Cup was therefore decided on the better back nine holes and Glen Dutton was easily the winner as he finished one under GROSS on the back nine. Glen joined Bradley Hall from Outlane 3 years ago and this was the first competition he had won although he has been a regular in the Handicap Team for the past couple of years and this season has only dropped half a point in the 5 matches so perhaps the wind was not too unexpected.

Likewise, Mark has been one of the strongest 'rabbits' for several seasons and now easily in the 'tigers' ranks.

In third place was Rick Fairburn (6) with 66, followed by Peter Scott (12) and past Junior Captain, Jonathan Gittins with the same nett scores.

The best gross of 72 was decided on a back nine count back and Scratch Team Captain, Paul Taylor edged out his best friend and playing partner, Andy Whitworth (+1) and Rick Fairburn.

Not to be outdone however, Andy Whitworth managed to claim the putting prize!

In Division 2, Jeff Calaghan (23) collected his first ever prize with his nett score of 64 with a new member this season, Chris Dyson (19) in second place with 67.

Around 100 members and friends concluded an excellent day with a dinner dance.

Hanson wins again as McDowell watches on at Galgorm Castle

Chris Hanson has won on the PGA EuroPro Tour for the second time in three weeks after a play-off triumph took him to the title.

With 2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell among a large crowd of more than 1,000 at Galgorm Castle in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, Hanson edged out Graeme Clark in the second hole of a play-off after the pair had finished level on -14.

The event, called The Galgorm Castle Northern Ireland Open (in association with Ulster Bank), was the fifth of the EuroPro Tour season.

Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield) had gone nearly five years since his last EuroPro Tour victory before he triumphed at Bovey Castle in June and he has now won another £10,000 to take his season total to £21,800 and practically guarantee a spot on next year’s Challenge Tour.

“I’m just over the moon and financially this relieves the pressure as I can just play and enjoy it for the rest of the year,” said Hanson, who enjoyed a perfect third round that included an eagle at the third and five birdies.

“I’m playing as good as I’ve played, my concentration is better than ever before and my focus is what’s making such a big difference.

“Winning at Bovey gave me a massive boost and I’m just really relaxed at the moment.

“It would mean everything to play on the Challenge Tour and it’s what I’ve worked hard for six years as pro for, with that aim in the back of my mind all of the time.

“I don’t think I would have to do anything different and I think I could compete quite easily as the EuroPro Tour is strong at the top.”

Clark, who birdied the last to force the play-off, moved down to second in the Order of Merit, but, like Hanson, has probably secured a spot in the top five of the money list to claim his place on the 2012 Challenge Tour, although he was not taking anything for granted.

“Hopefully I’ve done enough but I just have to keep going and my confidence is good at the moment,” said Doncaster-based Clark. “Chris is in great form and played really well but if I keep playing the way I am then I can go out and win again.

“The buzz around the venue was incredible and it was just like being on a (European) Tour event. I’ve never seen so many people watching one of these events and it was unbelievable how many people were there but it’s good for us to play in these situations.”

Steven Hackett (Cork) finished in third position on -10, while Billy Fowles (Wentworth), Michael McGeady and Michael Collins shared fourth spot on -8.

Ross Cameron had been leading at the end of the both of the opening two days and looked on course for his first victory when he eagled the second but his hopes ended with a run of five dropped shots between the tenth and 14th before he finished tied seventh.

McDowell was impressed with the standard of golf on the EuroPro Tour and also paid tribute to the organisers of the Galgorm event.

"This event is a great training event for the stars of the future,” said McDowell.

"It's very difficult to jump straight on to the European Tour. Guys have to toughen themselves up and learn their trade.

"It's a great event for Galgorm Castle which is a course I played when I was a young boy. It's a great location and they have great sponsors on board."

The event was filmed and Matchroom Sport will produce a two-hour highlights package, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports on Wednesday, July 13.

The next competition on the EuroPro Tour will take place at the prestigious Fota Island in Cork from July 6 to 8.

Woodsome up

The YUGC Third Division Championship was held at the Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club on Wednesday 29th June.

Conditions were excellent and the scores reflected this and also the good set up of the course.

Bedale were the winners, however, Woodsome Hall GC, who were recently promoted from the fourth division, came fifth and are promoted to the second division team championship which will played on Wednesday 3rd August 2011 at Renishaw Golf Club, Sheffield.

The photo shows back row from the left Chris Dyson and John Hirst (Team Captain). Front row from the left Tom Goodaire, Adam Cryer and Robert Scollick.

After a good run Halifax Golf Club were relegated back to the fourth division for 2012.
