Andy makes it number 11

The final of the Halifax Huddersfield & District Union of Golf Clubs Match Play Championship, in the memory of John Crawshaw, was played at the Bradley Park Golf Club Huddersfield on Sunday 25th September. B M Howarth Halifax has been the sponsor of this premier competition for many years.

The final was between Andrew Whitworth of Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club and Brad Tupman from Huddersfield Golf Club. Interesting to note is that Brad is 33 years old and Andrew 50 years old. The format was match play over 36 holes.

Whitworth had won this competition 10 times, the first in 1983 and was looking forward to making it 11, a tremendous achievement by any standard. He did this by winning 4&3!

The Bradley Hall man has represented the Union many times over the years also captaining the side on numerous occasions.

The days play. The morning was wet and this caused more concentration especially on the greens. It was a close encounter, however, Whitworth went into lunch 2up. The afternoon was dry and sunny and Whitworth consolidated his lead but Brad Tupman fought back and at one hole Tupman found himself in the edge of a pond, donning water proofs he attempted to play a shot from the water but alas only got a drenching!

After winning the 14th Tupman put his ball into trees on the next hole while Andrew put his ball onto the green with his second shot and although Brad played an amazing third shot he failed to match Andrew Whitworth's par four and the match was over 4 and 3.

Jeremy Woods long wait to win a competition finally arrived when he sealed his first ever victory in the Autumn Stableford and he kept the computer working right to the end as his three ball was the very last out to claim a thrilling mission accomplished achievement.

His 44 points came from a round that included 22 points on each of the nine holes and he easily had his best ever score of 81 gross as he registered a score on every hole.

One of his playing partners Nathan McEwan also had 41 points (Jeremy said he brought the best out of him!) which gave him third place in the same division after Simon Rutter had also registered the same total and had a better back nine.

The first division winner was John Lawton whose 41 points took the honors with Simon Senior , Jarrad Hazelden and Martyn Jones all on 40 points which needed count backs to decide the order.

The first three mentioned in the first division results are battling it out for the Stroke Play Championship which includes the lowest aggregate nett scores over the best 10 rounds of the completed major and singles strokeplay competitions for the playing season which is concluded next Saturday so an exciting finish is anticipated.

Robert Armitage on cue to win medal & Moxon Bowl

The September Medal is the last medal competition of the year when all monthly medal winners of 2011 (1st & 2nd Division) compete for the Moxon Bowl as well as playing in the normal monthly one.

The winner Robert Armitage swapped his snooker cue (he did try and get on the tough professional snooker circuit) for a set of golf clubs and it has certainly paid off as his 65 nett round got the breaks when he finished just before the rain came to win by 2 shots from fellow division 2 player Paul Kay and a further shot behind came Leo Scott with his 68 nett.

At one point the rain threatened to make some greens unplayable with water affecting the putting surface and whilst players carried on with holes that needed that bit of extra stroke effort the competition was completed when the rain relented. The first three in the Moxon Bowl came from the 2nd division and in 4th place was Jarrad Hazelden from the 1st division with an excellent 69 nett which he did in the worst conditions and also gave him the best gross score of 74.

MOXON BOWL
1. Robert Armitage (2nd Division) - 82 - (17) = 65 nett
2. Paul Kaye (2nd Division) - 90 - (23) = 67 nett
3. Leo Scott (2nd Division) - 91 - (23) = 68 nett
4. Jarrad Hazelden (1st Division) - 74 - (5) = 69 nett - best gross
5. Steve Bradley (1st Division) - 84 - (15) = 69 nett
6. Matthew Alsop (1st Division ) - 82 - (13) = 69 nett
7. Kevin Pendlebury(1st Division) - 84 - (15) = 69 nett
8. Trevor Pickles (1st Division ) - 83 - (13) = 70 nett

No grand final for local golfers

Karl Smith
Both representatives from the local region fell just short in their quest to reach the grand final of the Northern Matchplay Golf Championship.

Queensbury's Karl Smith put on a tremendous display and just lost out on the final green to Rotherham's Teejay White in the individual section of the Yorkshire regional final at Pannal Golf Club.

Smith won his morning semi-final in comfortable fashion then pushed the South Yorkshire youngster all the way in the afternoon. It needed a 25 foot putt from White on the 18th green to secure his place in the grand final at The Alwoodley Golf Club next week.

Andrew Goldstein
In the pairs event Andrew Goldstein, a member at Crosland Heath, and his partner James Skirrow lost out to the defending champions in the semi-final but had the consolation of winning the third place play-off match in the afternoon.

A full report from the individual and pairs finals can be seen on the official championship website.

The season-long competition is open to club golfers in the north of England. Matches are initally played on a lovcal basis before a regional final and grand final. Pre-registration is now open for the 2012 event.

Crow Nest Alliance

Luke Pilkington
The first Alliance of this season was held in perfect golfing weather, warm sunshine and a very light breeze, on a course in near perfect condition.

The Crow Nest Park course was in excellent condition and the winter alliance preferred lies avoided the debris left by the gales of the previous few days. The greens were as fast and true as usual with the pins in some very tricky positions requiring thoughtful positioning of approach shots if three putting was to be avoided.

Early leaders of the Pro-Am were the new lightweight Rob Booth partnered by Andy Hare (3), Bradley Hall, with what seemed in insurmountable 43 points which included 7 gross birdies. This score was just surpassed by late starters Rob Stansfield and Luke Pilkington (4), Crosland Heath, thanks to gross eagle by Luke on the 288 yard 7th hole.

Equalling the Pro-Am winning score of 44 points were home club members Nick Day (7) and ex-pro Chris Mowl (1) ahead of 3 pairs on 42 points. Second place went to Mick Appleyard (6) and Steve Sandie (5), Bradley Hall. Highlights of the winning pair’s round were a net eagle on the stroke 1 412 yard 2nd hole by Nick and a gross eagle on the 514 yard last hole by Chris. A gross eagle was also scored by Mick Appleyard at the 2nd hole the second time round. Equal third were Nick Hirst (10) and Dave Knapton (10), Outlane and Richard Wimpenny (15) and Simon Whitham (17), Crosland Heath.

Trevor Williams was welcomed as the president of the alliance for the 2011/2012 season and it was good to see Jim Crompton back in action again.

The full results can be seen here.

Bradley Hall Autumn Stableford

Although the weather has not caused a competition cancellation at Bradley Hall for the whole of the season, the final event, the 'Autumn Stableford' was in jeopardy on several occasions, with heavy downpours resulting in putting surfaces with standing water.

Fortunately however, the vast majority of the 120 competitors completed their rounds and negated a re-scheduling of the event.

Such were the conditions, the C.S.S. closed at 72 and for a change, the weather was consistent throughout the day.

In Division 1, a clear winner was Andy Whitfield (10) with 38 points and so claiming his first victory of the season and reducing his handicap for the 'winter' to nine. He was followed by Mick Jones (14), Steve Hopkinson (7), Carl Littlewood (13) and Nick Kelly (5), all with 34 points.

In Division 2, another clear winner was Mark Dyson (17) with an almost unbelievable 43 points and followed by David Hilton (20) 38 points, Paul Toon (16) 36 points and Mick Clark (22) with 35.

After prizes, a sum of £135 was donated to the Captains charity.

Elland Ladies Away Day

A merry band of Ladies from Elland golf club set out on their annual Away Day on Tuesday 6th September.

A coach came to collect the 24 Ladies taking part and whisked them off to Normanton. Unfortunately the weather was rather blustery with showers on and off during the day, but this did nothing to dampen the spirits of those taking part.

Lady Vice Captain, Annie Green, organised a fabulous day. The Ladies were playing for a variety of prizes, which were presented after dinner by Annie Green and Lady Captain, Carmen Leonard.

The photograph shows (from left) Lady Vice Captain Annie Green, Stableford Prize winner Sue Duckworth, and Lady Captain Carmen Leonard.

Bill Garside Putter prize won by early bird Peter

The Bill Garside unused putter which was donated by Outlane's professional after his 20 years service to the club in 1962 to be used as a major prize is a beautifully decorated piece of equipment that nobody is allowed to play with even if you win it.

The winner gets his name on a small disc which is on the encased trophy for the designed putter and this years name will be Peter Boakes who led from the front in his early start and nobody could get within 3 shots of his 62 nett round as his near perfect round was helped with a chip in on the 14th hole. The only blemish he had was on the 18th where a 1 over par didn't deny him the win and the the old saying of keep a 6 off your card which he just failed to do.

In second place was John Lawton with a gross 70 (1 under par)(65 nett) and another nett 65 from Patrick O'Flynn who claimed third after his back nine score did not quite match their equal scores.Gavin Hirst was another early starter and a 66 nett was also helped with 2 twos in his round whilst Paul Walker came in with a 67 nett which also included a two and the interesting facts was that 3 of the top 4 players managed a two to help their scores.

The standard scratch for the day was 69 (2 under par ) on a course which was in fine condition with superb fairways and excellent greens.

Leading scores:
1. Peter Boakes - 78 gross -(16) = 62 nett
2. John Lawton - 70 gross - (5) = 65 nett
3. Patrick O'Flynn - 78 gross -(13) = 65 nett
4. Gavin Hirst - 75 gross -(9) = 66 nett
5. Paul Walker - 75 gross - (8) = 67 nett

Barron Rosebowl

The penultimate men's competition of the season, the 'Barron Rosebowl' was held at Bradley Hall on Saturday 10 September 2011 when 64 pairs of golfers participated in the better ball event. Despite grey skies for the early starters, the temperatures were quite high and with a course in perfect condition and immaculate greens, low scoring became the order of the day.

Starting at 7am, Peter Olson (11) and Glenn Layfield (18) partnered Nicky Lodge (9) and Peter Mason (7) and both pairs returned identical nett scores of 62, the latter having the better back nine. Despite the clouds clearing and blue skies from mid morning, those scores could not be beaten although gallant attempts were made by Alex Foster (14) and his partner, Glen Dutton (12) and Peter Speeding (10) and Mark Dyson (15) with nett 63's.

Such was the scoring that over 50% of the field finished with sub par rounds.
A rare event occurred on the par 4, stroke 1 seventh hole when Andy Appleyard (3) holed his second shot.

Leading scores
1. N.Lodge & P.Mason 62 (back 9 countback)
2. P.Olson & G.Layfield 62

Upcoming winter competitions

Fixby
Golfers in the Huddersfield area have never had it so good when it comes to winter golf competitions.

The long-standing HHDGA Winter Alliance is enjoying a revival over recent years and they have now confirmed dates and venues for the coming season. The format for these events is betterball pairs. Full details can be found on their website.

Huddersfield Golf Club have also announced the four dates that will form their 2011-12 winter team competitions.

The Fixby Winter Series was launched last year and was sold out in a matter of days. The format is a 3-person team with an entry-fee of just £75 per team which includes lunch. There is also a discount if you enter all four competitions but interested golfers will need to be quick to secure a place.

Crosland Heath
Crosland Heath have also followed suit and will host five winter team competitions during the off-season.

Tournaments at the Heath are 4-person events which include coffee & bacon roll on arrival plus a meal afterwards. The top two teams at each event qualify for the grand final in April. The cost is good value at £100 per team.

Both Fixby and Crosland Heath are regarded as the top two courses when it comes to golf during the autumn and winter as their firm, fast-draining fairways and greens make for excellent all year round play.

Both clubs are using local golf company Golf Empire to help promote their competitions, a website which lets amateur golfers find out where and when competitive golf will be played. Entry-forms can can be found here.

Meanwhile the popular Yorkshire Winter Pairs has returned for the 2011-12 off-season.

A number of local golfers entered last year with a pair from Crow Nest Park reaching the finals day. Entry is fantastic value at just £15 per pair with a maximum of five wins required to reach the final.

Finally, Huddersfield-based Seeitnowsports have scheduled an autumn pro-am at De Vere Oulton Hall in Leeds.

Entry for a team of three amateurs and a professional, which can be allocated if required, is £195.

The tournament which includes brunch on arrival and a 4-course dinner afterwards takes place on Tuesday 11th October and is already filling up quickly.

Union finish fourth in league

Champions Sheffield Union

The HHDUGC team signed off with a defeat at Sheffield in their final game of the 2011 season.

The 24-12 reversal at Dore & Totley against the 2011 champions left them in fourth place for the campaign. A season which saw them score three wins and three loses plus a halved match which was abandoned at lunch.

The morning was a mixture of sunshine and showers, however, the afternoon was sunshine. Many of the matches went to the 17th or 18th hole.

HHDUGC President Richard Kaye (right)
The addition of the New land (as they call it) with very demanding holes was praised by all as was the course in general. Its length proving a good test.
