3 Shot Margin for Whisky Frolic Winners

The Outlane Golf Clubs annual Whisky Frolic which starts the build up for Christmas activities for the members saw a good turn out from the better ball competition and with plenty of prizes on offer it usually develops into a close affair to sort the positions out.

However the combination of Paul Phillips and Andrew Fearnley blended together perfectly as a 3 shot margin gave them the first choice for the whisky bonanza which players have an escalating choice.

Their 5 gross birdies was the deciding factor but also Paul's run of 7 consecutive pars from the 7th to the 13th ( included 3 nett birdies) helped their score along after a back nine of 31 followed their 30 on the front nine.

Their only dropped shot in the entire round was on the par 3 fifth but Andrew got them back online with one of his two gross birdies at the next hole. The next pairing to claim their prize was Nigel Crowther and Martin Atkinson who just got the better of Steve Beeby and Simon Wagstaff with a better back nine.

The next scores of 65 saw a host of combinations totaling this score with Steve Bradley and Dave Murdoch having the best back nine with Brian Cassidy partnering next years captain Keith Birchenall leading the rest with the better back six. A large number of pairings came in with a 66 which they would normally settle for in the next competition which is the Turkey Trot in 3 weeks.

Whisky Frolic - Better Ball (3/4 Handicap)
1. Paul Phillips & Andrew Fearnley = 61
2. Nigel Crowther & Martin Atkinson = 64
3. Steve Beeby & Simon Wagstaffe = 64
4. Steve Bradley & Dave Murdoch = 65
5. Brian Cassidy & Keith Birchenall = 65

Outlane Alliance results

Another wet and windy day, almost as bad as last week at Crosland Heath, was endured by a very good turnout of 10 professionals & partners and 26 amateur pairs at Outlane last Tuesday.

Rob Booth produced an outstanding performance to win the Pro-Am on his own, his father, who was to be his partner, having to withdraw due to illness. His 40 points just beat the Crow Nest Park pair Gareth Evans and Mark Campbell (9) with Longley Park’s John Ambler and Jason Micklethwaite (12) a further 3 points back.

The Am-Am was also very close with the home pair of Eddie Casper (13) and John Morris (16) coming out on top with a fine score of 38 points. One point behind were Tony Morrison (9) and Simon Garside (17), Bradley Hall / Willow Valley, with third place going to Independent Huddersfield’s Mick Dempsey (9) and Pete Newey (14).

Outlane Autumn Stableford gets Darren 9 nett Birdies

A stunning round of golf which contained half of the 18 holes producing nett birdies gave Darren Vickerman a win in the penultimate medal of the year and he could even afford not to score on the 14th hole such was his consistency over the full round.

In fact he did not drop a shot until the 7th hole and then another one on the 13th which added to his no score on the next hole put his round in jeopardy in the winning stakes, however from this point he got himself back into contention and on the winning trail by producing a finish which gave him 43 points from birdies on some of the finishing holes.

In second place in the Division 1 stakes was Martin Cullimore who did not have the best of starts with 4 dropped shots on the first 4 holes but then went on a run that produced a super round but came up 2 points short with 41 points which with a better start would have put him in the running for the medal win.

The Division 2 winner was Gary Alsop who had a 3 point margin from Ian Charles and again had to produce a finish to keep his lead whilst it was just the opposite for the runner-up who dropped his points on the final holes.

Darren Vickerman = 43 points

National Alliance abandoned

The National Alliance at Crosland Heath yesterday was abandoned at 1pm due to flooded greens.

There had been virtually no let-up in the rain and strong winds all day and despite squeegeeing the worst affected greens it was a loosing battle.

The event has been re-scheduled for Monday 26 March 2012 at the same venue and with the same start times.

Outlane ladies tri-am turkey trot played in fowl weather

There was no cure and it was a bad case of wind and rain which lasted for the whole of the competition and the ladies just had to grin and bear it in the 16 hole Stableford (2 to count).

Such was the ferocity that it was a credit to those who finished and only four teams decided to call it a day with the brutal conditions when they reached the fourteenth which was only just playable with blustery rain affecting the putting surface.

The winning team of Caroline Casper (Outlane) ,Alison Tracy (Huddersfield) and June Sowden (Huddersfield) kept their heads down and took it all in their stride as they breezed to a two point winning margin which was helped with a 7 point haul on one of the holes.

In second place was Ann Hesselden (Outlane) , Gill Morris (Outlane) and Stephany Smith (Huddersfield) who had 39 points on the first nine but found the next 7 holes a struggle which proved to be decisive (20 points) as the winners racked up 29 of theirs on the incoming holes.

Future bright for rising star Joe

15-year-old Joe Blackwell produced a stunning 63 nett to win the Outlane October Medal and he put it down to the Union coaching which he has been receiving through the junior scheme which they run.

The teenage prospect claimed his victory in style and has now reduced his handicap by 8 shots this season and now his ambition is to get down to single figures and the delighted youngster was thrilled just to be top of the class despite no prize is on offer for this last stroke medal of the year.

Traditionally all the proceeds go to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute Appeal which the club have supported for numerous years. In second place was David Taylor who came close to a win and also had a 63 nett but could not match the storming finish of the youngster.

Keith Johnson produced a 65 nett round to finish third whilst ex Derbyshire cricketer Shaukat Dar also thought he had done enough for his maiden victory with his hat trick of birdies from the 14th but the last two holes set him back in the scoring stakes to finish 66 nett.

Local link to northern final

Golf de la Luz director Dan Thomson with Teejay White
Local golf travel company, Golf de la Luz, provided the winners of the 2011 Northern Matchplay Golf Championship with a 5-star golfing holiday to Spain at Alwoodley Golf Club last week.

As main sponsor of the season-long competition the Holmfirth-based outfit, who specialise in golf breaks to the Costa de la Luz & Seville in Spain and the Lisbon & Algarve regions of Portugal, were on hand to dish out the top prizes to the overall champions.

The winners will be jetting off to the El Rompido Resort in the Costa de la Luz for an unlimited golf experience.

In the two-day climax to the tournament Rotherham Golf Club's Teejay White staged a remarkable comeback from six-down to land the individual title whilst Durham golfers, Kevin Dyson & Allan Williams from Seaham Golf Club, claimed the pairs crown with victory on the 36th green.

Thomson with pairs winners & Captain of Alwoodley
The season-long knockout tournament is run by another HD post-coded operation and attracted over 1,000 entries this year.

The event is organised and promoted by Bradley Park member, Edward Battye, with entries now open for the 2012 event whilst the closing date is looming for an off-season winter pairs knockout.

Battye and Dan Thomson, a director of Golf de la Luz, watched the final day unfold and walked the last nine holes of the pairs match which saw an exciting finale.

Thomson said, "I really enjoyed the day, equally as much as the participants seemed to, so that is great!"

Battye added, "The championship has been a huge success this year and with added support of Golf de la Luz next year should be even better as it allows us to take the grand final overseas to the stunning Arcos Gardens."

His 7 under par 61 included a run of seven birdies from holes 5 to 11 with the only bogey coming at the 17th. With his partner Mark Campbell (8) the Crow Nest Park pair won the Pro-Am with 44 points from Rob Stansfield and Oliver Shaw (8), Crosland Heath, on 40 points.
