Birdies (and eagles) galore in Outlane Turkey Trot

The annual competition for the members when they play for their Christmas Turkeys took part over the Saturday and Sunday when the weather was completely different regarding the two days.

With players having the choice of which day to play due to daylight availability it was the Saturday entries who had the best of the conditions with excellent golf weather and the Sunday entry was a case of playing in thick fog throughout the day.

With 12 turkeys on offer there was only 1 pairing who could produce a winning score on Sunday with players claiming they had not got the foggiest of where they were going such was the visibility on all the holes.

The winning score of 60 nett from Chris Booth and Tony Stead was made on the front nine from a 27 nett score with the latter having birdies on the second and third holes whilst Chris Booth followed with an eagle on the fourth and set up their turkey prize.

In second place came Steve Beeby and Dan Cooper who thought they had lost their chance when the former who had a tremendous round put his ball out of bounds on the 17th and his partner was way off line but in play. Dan Cooper then made a mess of his second shot and was still quite a way off from the green but then saw his ball go in the hole from his next shot from a distance for a glorious nett eagle which gave them a back nine of only 29 shots.

Peter Lawrence Brown and last years junior Captain Bryn Jenkinson produced an eight birdie round for their turkey and then on Sunday Jarrad Hazelden and Dan Schofield produced the round of the weekend considering the fog which had players hitting off the tee when players in front had given them the all clear shout.

A straight shot was certainly required and they did this with monotonous regularity to set up their turkey with a 30 front nine nett score. The shot of the day happened on the par 5 12th hole when the former hit his second shot and reached the green to find his ball 2 feet from the hole and then missed his nett albatross putt but got his eagle score.

Paul Kaye and Simon Senior came next with Tim Brook and Chris Rothery also having a 64 nett to get their Christmas Dinner which the club present to them on Christmas eve.

Turkey Trot Four Ball Better Ball
Chris Booth / Tony Stead = 60 nett
Steve Beeby / Dan Cooper = 61 nett
Peter Lawrence Brown/ Bryn Jenkinson = 63 nett
Jarrad Hazelden / Dan Schofield = 63 nett
Paul Kaye / Simon Senior =64 nett
Tim Brook / Chris Rothery = 64 nett

West End Alliance

Rob Booth partnered by his father Frank (10), Bradley Hall, tied for first placed Pro-Am with Gareth Evans and Mark Campbell (8), Crow Nest Park, with the relatively low score of 40 points.

The Am-Am was won by Simon McKenzie (10) and Nigel Nuttall (5), Outlane, with 43 points from Mike Dempsey (9) and Pete Newey (14), Ind. Huddersfield, on 41 and Dave Knapton (10) and Nick Hirst (10), Outlane on 40.

The conditions were perfect for golf with sunshine and a light breeze and a course in excellent condition. The greens were especially good for November, playing as well as in the summer. Play was from the yellow tees which tends to result in fewer scoring opportunities at West End. The entry was oversubscribed and the last of the 64 pairs just managed to finish as darkness fell. The scoring was generally very consistent with only seven net eagles.

The next event is the Christmas Dinner meeting at Hebden Bridge on Tuesday 29 November. This is almost fully subscribed and anyone wanting to play should contact Barry Isles as soon as possible.

See the full scores.

First out lead from the front

The very first tee time out in the Pros 4 Ball Better Ball set the standard for the Outlane Pros Fourball competition and maintained their momentum right to the end to clinch a win in the second division category.

Ian Greenwood and Arthur Dakin were the first to tee off and it was the latter who played his part on the first nine holes with several pars which became birdies due to his shot handicap and a 31 score was registered.

However the second nine belonged to Ian Greenwood who nearly had a hole in one on the 253 yard par four when his tee shot came to rest 2 feet from the hole after nearly going in .The second nine holes were completed in 29 shots which gave them the edge over Michael Hales and Dave Thewlis who also had a 60 but could not beat the winners better back nine score.

Stuart Eastwood and Trevor Pickles were next with a 62 which was also a better back nine than Robert Armitage and father-law Steve Morgan. The First Division also registered a 60 score with a late made up partnership when Ron Hardys usual partner was unable to play but Paul Savage stepped in to partner him and a birdie blitz from him sealed the win.

Kevin Sykes and Steve McNair came second on their own with a 61 and another count back had to sort out Steve Howlett and Ken Robinson with Peter Lawrence Brown and Bryn Jenkinson just losing out with their identical 62 score. The scoring was excellent throughout the Pros competition which is played off the yellow markers hence the low scores.

Pros Better Ball

Ron Hardy / Paul Savage = 60

95 year old Arthur plays to his handicap in testing conditions

Today 11 / 11 / 11, Arthur Crawshaw, a Dewsbury District member for over 44 years, managed to play a full round around Dewsbury District’s testing moorland course at the ripe old age of 95.

Not only that he played to his handicap amassing 36 stableford points in the process. All this on a miserable day with mist and fog and a cold wind blowing and putting many people off even going out to play.

Arthur plays every week but usually prefers a buggy nowadays but because of the recent poor weather he could not use one today.

Knowing the testing landscape of the course helps to realise the magnitude of this amazing feat for someone so mature in years, even to those who know Arthur they were yet again surprised by his commitment, endurance but not his strength of character. He is a proper role model to be admired and looked up to.

The photo shows Arthur immediately after completing his round today.

Marsh has been a regular player in the Yorkshire Boys and Men's team during 2011 will continue to train with the Yorkshire elite squad during the Winter.

140 Outlane Members Turn Out For Royal British Legion Appeal

The November Medal for which the proceeds are donated to the Poppy Appeal saw a good turn out from the Outlane members who once again contributed in their support for the British Legion and the 140 who turned out enjoyed a course which was in fine condition as the scores reflected this.

The overall winner was Len Carr from the second division with a 44 Stableford points total which was made up of a 24 front nine total and whilst he didn't actually falter 20 points on the back nine was sufficient to give him the win.

In second place was Martin Dickenson from the first division who had 42 points and it was a case of his round getting better the further he went as 20 points on the first nine was bettered on the second nine (22 points) and gave him a better count back from four other identical scores of 42.

Matthew Alsop from the first division and Stephen Brearey , Keith Skippins and Peter Ford from the second division filled the next places with their identical points total which on another day would have been good enough to taste success. A total of 31 golfers broke par!

November Medal

Martin Dickenson = 42 points
Matthew Alsop = 42
Andrew Mellor = 41
Robert Armitage = 41
Neil Morison = 40

Second Division:

Winter Alliance at Dewsbury

Both the Pro-Am and Am-Am events were quite tight, at Dewsbury District on Tuesday, 1st November 2011, with very good scoring at the top.

Gareth Evans and Nick Day (6), Crow Nest Park, won the Pro-Am with 44 points from early leaders Jamie Coverley and Gary Ward (8), Bradley Park, on 43 points. Equal third were David Astin and Andy Cryer (7), Hebden Bridge, and Peter Young and N. Hartley (12), Willow Valley, on 42. Gareth Evans had 4 birdies but the 4 net birdies on the last four holes by Nick Day sealed the win.

Jamie Coverley had 7 birdies but Garry Ward did his part coming in on 7 holes. Andy Appleyard (4) and Steve Sandie (5), Bradley Hall, won the Am-Am with 43 points from Jim Murphy (12) and Jimmy Cain (4), Dewsbury/Crosland Heath, who were second on countback from Mike Dempsey (9) and Pete Newey (14), Ind. Huddersfield, on 42 points.

After the severe conditions of the previous Alliance at Outlane we were back to the Indian summer with warm sunshine all day. Heavy overnight rain had left the course wet underfoot and the greens very soft which probably benefited the lower handicap golfers. With 52 pairs competing and some delayed in starting due to the Cooper Bridge traffic chaos the last few groups finished in near darkness.

Full results and photos here.
